I think Sword and Sorcery is one of the only genres left that is only of interest to nerds and repels mainstream audiences, so any chances of a big game being produced by a major studio is slim.

Honestly Souls games have always to me been the standard for armor that is fantastical but (mostly) not so much so that it looks impractical or non-functional. Conan has female warriors who can fight on par with men. Therefore seeing a woman who can stand on equal footing should no longer be a question of believability as it is normal in-universe.

One of the most common issues people have with bikini armour is that we're meant to take it at face value that its suitable and capable as a piece of protection but it logically doesn't make sense and thus causes dissonance that impacts how properly immersed somebody can be in the scenario because that instrusive thought is there.

You could say "Oh it's enchanted!" but then you'd have to come up with more reasons as to why it doesn't look different but with the same enchantments and then it spirals into "just because"(or author's personal taste as you said) which also impacts immersion. It happens in both movies, so it's definitely not a one-off thing or an extremely irregular happenstance that just occurs. We may argue all day on its rarity or its in-universe implications, but it's definitely there. The two movies (because I disregard the reboot) didn't allow enough information to conclusively link warrior women and commonality, however both movies featured them for a notable part of their runtime which -if nothing else- leads us to the fact that warrior women exist to a larger degree than our own world.

I'm saying the reason bikini armor was a thing in the first place is because characters in fantasy media were usually locked in to one armor or outfit or whatever for the duration of the movie or game. In games especially your character always just wore full battle armor 24/7. So designers had to figure out a way to have sex appeal when the sexy female characters were going to be stuck wearing armor the whole time. BG3 has every character wear layers, so they have armor, civilian clothes, and underwear on at any given time. The ease of swapping between these layers makes it unnecessary for the armor to be sexy.

Original Conan novels had plenty of action chicks and their existence was not really questioned (such as Belit and Valeria) but the society at large was still portrayed as patriarchal and mostly male dominated.

His Dark Agnes de Chastillon stories are about a swordwoman adventuring in Medieval France after escaping an arranged marriage and being trained by a mercenary, and original Red Sonya (making her a Hyborian character was a latter idea for Conan comics) was originally a sexy wandering gunslinger babe who just joins the Austrian army in their war against Ottomans without anyone objecting.

True realism would require real incentives, not imaginative simulations of them, and so all armor design defaults to the artistic-marketing incentive structure of fiction.
