Super Mario Sunshine was very lore-driven.

There are some frustrating moments and sometimes its overly punishing. Yet, I think it gives the game more personality. The whole story is that you were falsely accused by the islanders for dirtying the island and have to now clean up all that mess. Then you have moments where the game kicks you off a high platform due to your curiousity because wouldn't that be funny? Or you jump in a pipe thinking that'll restart you at the beginning, but it kicks you out of the level because lol lmao. The developers must have had a blast seeing how much trolling they could get away with.

my reaction was muted, I was mostly just kind of meh on it outside of the basic controls being quite fun.

Ratchet and Clank was a platformer first before they went all in on the shooting part in later games.

64 has better movement mechanics but Sunshine has better movement controls, if that makes sense. Moving Mario around in Sunshine is smoother and snappier but the actual platforming and momentum Mario has in 64 is more fun to experiment with.

I could see it being more fun to experiment with, but mostly because you are fighting the jank of an early 3d platformer.
Would not call that having better controls in any circumstance.
Every game since built upon 64, which is significant, but I can't say it was best at anything really.

64 is an exception, nobody has really topped it in terms of raw 3D platforming mechanics. But Sunshine is easily the king of the rest of them

Some early 3D platformers surprisingly felt very fun to play. Sonic has never felt as smooth to play as he did in Sonic Adventure, and Mario just did not feel fun to play in Mario Galaxy. I'd say Sunshine > 64 > Galaxy and Sonic Adventure > literally any game following as far as controls go.
