Demon's Souls is to Dark Souls what Wolfenstein 3D is Doom (1993), it set the foundation only for the following game refined it. Demon's Souls has far too many problems with its design, and the bosses are really rudimentary.

Demon's Souls bosses aren't designed to be hard, they're designed in a way that you can figure out how to beat them while you're fighting them and are sharing a space with them. Once you figure out that you need to hit the Adjudicators wound it's an easy boss, and even before that it is easy, but you can't beat it yet, you have to avoid it and observe its quirks to figure out what's going on. And no, this is not some super high IQ puzzle, but it makes you feel much more like an adventurer than prescribed roll slop gameplay. But this is literally not a conversation anyone is ready to have. Demon's Souls and to a large extent Dark Souls worked off of things being intuitive for the player. The large towering Taurus demon moves at a speed that its size would suggest. The Gaping Dragon has a turn radius of an airplane, just like its body would suggest.

Meanwhile in later titles you now have giant fucking Dragons like Bayle that can nothing personal dash all over the place or shit like Scadutree Avatar that can charge around at sonic speeds for some fucking reason. Nothing is intuitive anymore, everything is just about rote memorization. Your intuition and adventure senses are not of any help anymore when tackling a boss, you just gotta die and eventually roll to victory over and over again. The roll is also a good example of this, because of originally it was supposed to suggest that you dodged a weapon swing or swipe of an attack, but now we have arrived at a point where you can roll through literally explosions, which means the games have become a parody of themselves and the universe now acknowledges that your character is not dodging while rolling, but actually momentarily invincible.

It's just a worse final fantasy game with western story conventions and tropes rather than japanese ones that you find offputting.

you can keep making your entire party stronger and stronger with no limits. where jrpgs fall off in innovating, this one retains the fun for the rest of the game. the lumina resource that's needed to add the 100s of upgrades to each party member is scarce but via exploration and battles you will find lots of it. early game it wants you to focus on boosting pure damage output, then a bit later you focus on utility and free-aim shots, then you unlock new stuff via story and get to upgrade those things too, then in the endgame you aim to upgrade your special bar so it charges faster. it never gets boring because theres always a system to look forward to upgrading.

If Dark Souls 1 isn't on your list of top 100 best or most influential videogames of all time, you don't know shit about this hobby.

I said this already but it's sort of overrated but actually not. With that in mind, there have been times where it has been underrated, and other times where that has corrected giving the impression of hype and being overrated, but actually it's just restoring balance.

LTTP has plenty of era-appropriate deficits. One of its most charming features is how it bridges TLoZ NES to GB LA while being neither but sharing DNA of both, on top of it being quintessentially SNES with Mode 9 and similarities to games in vibe like Young Merlin or Lord of the Rings. Not to mention Super Castlevania or Super Metroid.

And in that strange between space it occupies, it does a lot of weird shit that only exists for it alone, although perhaps a touch of that weirdness was carried into Link Between Worlds.

It's just the most perfectly unique, quintessentially SNES game, that also connects and bridges generations of Zelda games, a very distinctly flavored, and excellent, though never perfect series.

LTTP, Super Mario World, and Sim City SNES are the three quintessential SNES games.

If you go to Tsukuba mountain to this day on the gondola, they play Sim City from the speakers.

modern games have removed all tedium from games so they're like baby toys unless you crank up the difficulty. jrpgs used to be much better balanced difficulty wise back in the day when most of the challenge came from resource management and dealing with attrition. I havent played e33 but I assume it's one of those modern games where every boss is encountered at full resources and thus they are tuned up to take that into account. I would rather play a game where the boss is easy but you have to engage him with 30-50% of your resources left from dealing with a dungeon gauntlet before him.
