Oh yeah... that happened...
Oh yeah... that happened
Fuck WB, they had lightning in a bottle and spit on it. No other smash clone has ever done as well and probably ever will.
mtx everything
battlepass
content is fomo/timegated
mtx needed to progress through content
monetization was absolutely fucked
okay, time for our big relaunch, what do we have ready to go to show what we've been up to for a year?
2 (two) (dos) (ni) characters people would be interested in, and one meme character that recycles an already made character model from our scrapped assist trophy mechanic
These idiots had no idea how to ride the massive momentum they had.
I have 130 hours in Multiversus, so I'm definitely on the high end of their playerbase, but I still flamed out several months before service ended BOTH TIMES.
take game offline people spent money on for a year
return it with 30 Ms input buffer, shitty characters like banana guard, inoperable options menu, extremely slowed down combat, massively oversized characters, horrid pay to win microtransactions, and inability to unlock new characters without 500 hours of grind
wtf why are people upset?
total Aether victory
did they ever even add a option to turn off the fucking ugly team color aura overlayed on all the characters in the matches
i miss batman
literally the sickest platfight character since fishbunjin
No other smash clone has ever done as well
in terms of what, numbers? certainly not quality or depth. but even in terms of numbers, how profitable was the game considering the budget and huge marketing? are you just assuming it was profitable or do you have data?
Same but Tom and Jerry. Such a fun, creative, perfectly executed character.
Did Aether get any noticeable bump in players from this, or did the much more likely thing happen where they all went to Smash Bros instead?
believe that option was there from the start.
"Smash Killers" always fail because they want to attract what is really the Smash Bros. Melee competitive scene, but nobody in that community wants to play anything other than Smash Bros Melee.
they all went to Smash Bros
Buddy they all went to Roblox and Fortnite. If any of them had an eye for quality they wouldn't have been playing MVS in the first place.
snoys shill Rivals of Aether as "THE SMASH KILLER"
it fails and dies off
snoys shill Nickelodeon Brawl as "THE NEW SMASH KILLER"
it fails and dies off
snoys shill Multiversus as "THE NEW SMASH KILLER"
it fails and dies off
snoys shill Steam Deck as "THE SWITCH KILLER"
snoys shill Palworld as "THE POKÉMON KILLER"
it fails and dies off
What rip-off garbage will snoys try to shill next?
are the "snoys" in the room with us right now, anon?
They literally announced a new character this very day, and the game isn't even on Playstation. Wtf console war fumes are inhaling? youtube.com
Its so odd if you just look at tournament numbers compared to sales for smash. The competitive scene is so tiny, yet for some reason they always insist on making 1v1 fox only final destination games.
You're sperging out about "snoys" and you didn't even mention Playstation All-Stars? Why the fuck would "snoys" shill Steam Deck and Palword, you fucking retard?
It also started having the worst case of new characters being really overtuned since tekken 7. Jack releasing as a fast, long reaching character that can become invulnerable almost on command and then the PPG releasing with one of the most braindead kill confirms ever really showed how they were planning to make people want to pay up for the new characters. Didn't work, obviously
Disney won, make a Kart Racer next time WB!
Multiversus only did well in terms of concurrent player count, which is fucking irrelevant as long as you're able to find a match online. It was dog shit in every other regard:
terrible animations
floaty, awkward movement
imbalanced
insanely predatory monetization
Game's finally dead in a few days. PFG had a big chance and fucked up twice.
It's a shame the porn couldn't even keep the game afloat. Those Harley and Raven models were incredible.
what would win, a mass shilled game with several iconic ip's that's free to play? Or a furry game that actually tried to be a good fighting game?
I'm looking forward to your seething when Switch 2 sells record numbers in 11 days.
RoA2 only gets bumps when new characters release and, sometimes, when tournaments and character reveals happen. It's not like the game is in early access, but it's missing Workshop support which is what breathed a second wind into the first game.
all went to Smash Bros. instead
As that other anon said, I don't think MVS players are actually interested in, you know, decent fighting games. MVS was always cheap crap that appealed to people purely because of the IPs. Also Smash is in an absolutely dismal state, especially Ultimate. Top players are "retiring" from the game left and right, commentators barely holding back their coping and seething. Japan is basically carrying the game on its back and with how terrible online is, it means that there's not that much crossover between the East and West except for rare occasions like the recent golden week slew of tournaments.
The furry game because it has a fraction of the budget and is actually profitable
I already have mine pre-ordered. You are as mindbroken and obsessed as you are retarded.
fanservice crossover game about fun nostalgic characters
DUDE what if we made the player grind for 1000 billion years to unlock every character or spend a trillion dollars to buy them LOL
It amazes me how needlessly greedy video game companies can be (and I blame Warner-Discovery/Zaslav in this, not the devs).
You can already make a metric shitton of money JUST from selling cosmetics. You don't need to sell characters. Dota 2 and Marvel Rivals are the perfect examples. Free characters, paid cosmetics, make a bunch of money. Such a straightforward player-friendly model but the retarded fucking suits are still like
NO! MAKE THEM PAY FOR CHARACTERS!
then face zero repercussions when those games flop.
League of Legends is the only exception and that's because it's a well-established game with an addict fanbase. If it was coming out in the current year it would flop 100%.
Is this chick basically Zelda?
The only thing I remember about this game, is that you could arrest Lebron James.
In actual awe at some of the character choices. Also I only played for a month for its first launch. Double dodging was just frustrating. Also the netcode. Game really taught me that rollback can be worse than delay if the shit supporting it isn't up to par. At least delay is experienced by both instead of bad rollback that teleports one player into the blast zone.
gives you joker's human flesh light
doesn't give you the joker as a playable character
I cannot imagine why this game failed.
He was added but you had to either pay or grind for a quadrillion years to get him. Awful way to design a roster-focused game.
Remember when people were saying it was designed around duos just because every character got one shitty support move and team attack was off by default? I don't think the game was truly designed around shit.
It was but devs were listening to 1v1fags too much.
He should have been day 1, instead of his flesh light.
People were treating it like the game was actually good with duos, but it still wasn't. Even Smash duos is more fun because the game is just better.
I'd played it mainly in 2v2 the first time around, but when they brought it back, the character models were so fucking big that trying to play with 4 characters on the stage was a complete mess. Borderline unplayable.
No one is ever buying a WB game again unless they fix their reputation.
Rivals 1 & 2 are both doing well actually.
No.
The funny thing about Rivals 2 isn't that it's the polar opposite of Multiversus in terms of gameplay, it's the opposite in terms of production and monetization. MVS lured people in with the promise of being F2P and then nickle-and-dimed them to death. Rivals 2 is $30 (and regularly gets discounted to $20), all DLC is free (including characters), gives you a bunch of free bullshit every month for playing the game, lets you buy cosmetics with both free and premium currency (and premium currency can be earned from, again, playing the game), and is generally pretty pro-consumer. As a result, they have plenty of whales who are actually willing to throw money at the developers for cosmetics that they could otherwise earn, and the game is apparently doing pretty well financially. There's literally nothing that can kill RoA2 for the rest of however long its active lifespan is.
The whole thing is a lesson in how blatant enshittification is not always the answer, and how it can make people turn on you and kill your product.
A fusion of Mewtwo and Project M Zelda, more or less
Were they listening to Melee fags too much? lol
This game was fun as fuck and unironically had some incredibly unique characters.
LeBron James, Rick Sanchez and Raven had very fun unique gimmicks
same teleport up-b
very similar smashes and aerials
side-b has same aimed projectile (though it acts as a sticky grenade instead of immediate damage)
Looks like Zelda to me.
Exactly.
Multiversus died because of its monetization. People did not want to spend their entire lives grinding for characters, especially not in a Smash-like game about being able to play as beloved nostalgic characters. Every other issue was a minor concern by comparison.
lebron was the only fun character in the game
This game was fun as hell when it was actually working, and I'll never forgive Tony and his League of Legends poisoned brain for being the biggest retard in the gaming industry today who somehow managed to kill the same game twice.
We died not with a bang, and not even a whimper either thanks to that bald-headed fuck.
I'm 95% sure the studio understood how retarded that was and had gun put to their head by WB needing gatcha money for their coke highs.
game wasn't designed around casuals
no items
no goofy maps
no big maps etc
lel epic 2v2s only
Rivals 1 & 2 aren't design around casuals yet Rivals 2 is still doing well and Rivals 1 is still alive.
My biggest question about this game and its lifespan is
WHERE IS THE PORN????
I'm gonna list every major problem with this game, ya'll tell me if I forget something.
Poor game balance
Mediocre roster picks
Shelving the game and relaunching it
Relaunch was across the board worse
Excessive, predatory monetization
Locked roster, difficult to bring on new players
It's actually crazy how badly they botched this.
You forgot the movement was floaty crap and the animation was shoddy
That is that anon's point, they had a big following and spat on it by delivering a shit product.
It was a bit annoying when all your gadgets were on cooldown but I miss him too. It helped all the Batmains were cool interesting people. At one point we found a glitch that planted a batbomb on the enemy for free and had a gentlemans agreement not to show anyone because we knew it'd be patched.
Repost from /mvsg/ when people still thought this game was actually going to survive for even 1 year lmao :(
beta had godlike dodge maneuvers and terrible hitboxes
gold had slow movement, floaty as fuck air movement, buffer out of the ass, and terrible hitboxes
excessive customization made the game and its characters not have an identity
Make one last /mvsg/ for the road
No one played this game so no one noticed how they gave Nubia and Raven upskirts lol.
people willing to give it a second chance
kill all good will by being extremely jewish out of the gate
They deserve worse than bankruptcy
rivals and nick shills aren't snoys, they're compfags who are friends with the developers since the community is so small and irrelevant
ngl i thought you were talking about batman for a second
They weren't extremely jewish out of the gate.
You weren't able to even fucking open the game when it launched, which is the exact same problem they had when the "beta" launched originally, and somehow they didn't fucking fix it in all the downtime.
They were then extremely jewish like 2 seconds after that when things actually worked.
We NEEDED banana guard
let's remove the game for one year and make it worse
this games playerbase after relaunch was gay as fuck, just some of the worst subhumans Ive encountered. never seen a game with more t-bagging either
It's hilarious how pretty much everything not confirmed was tossed away. The Wicked Witch, who was being set up as a central antagonist in the comics, was basically scrapped after the Universal movie came out and WB didn't want to advertise for another company. And then anything Mortal Kombat was taken off the table because the studio head managed to get on Ed Boon's shitlist
Did you feel cool hitting me with semantics?
Oh yeah it’s dying soon, here’s a clip to humor the thread
Lebron James is up there too and had no business being as fun as he was
dude friendly fire is for tryhards
dude friendly fire just isn't fun
lmao
Gonna miss Jason
I liked arya
I don't think that anon is comparing vs smash, but vs other platform fighters (like the PS and Nintendo one) but even then its hard to say
As a great anon once said
Verif not needed
You forgot the movement was floaty crap and the animation was shoddy
In the Relaunch yes, but in the beta nope, it was fine
Damn looking at this really puts into perspective how awful the roster was.
and to think they had the gall to think people would grind/pay to play as these character.
i have no idea how they fucked it up, it sucked ass after it relaunched and then everyone lost interest. to be fair i only played it because my switch is banned so i couldn't play smash online.
They moved the game over to a different engine that ran worse for the relaunch, and instead of trying to fix that they spent nearly 100% of the downtime on micro transaction slop.
The problem they ran into is consumers are getting wise to predatory microtransactions, huge chunk of people saw that and just said lolnope and quit for good on day one.
it was fine
it really wasn't. smash 4/ultimate tier isn't 'fine'.
Multiversus is what happens when an amateur game development studio who knows absolutely nothing about fighting games tries to make a fighting game. People can complain about the microtransactions and roster choices all they want, but the game was a disaster to play on both a casual and a ""professional"" level. Nobody enjoyed playing this game after the beta. That was ultimately it's biggest failure
nah the game was fun
but it was very obvious they had no idea how to develop games like this, there were so many obvious mechanical holes that were held together by string and tape
just the implementation of attack decay should have been an enormous hit to anyones confidence that they would eventually hit their stride
All they needed to do was add Ben 10, dammit, and I would have checked it out. That or Ed, Edd'n Eddy.
rentry.org
You basically listed most of the stuff I wrote down for this mini-essay during Season 4. I'm still waiting for that one /mvsg/ anon to use it for his video...
you now remember when Ruby Rose got leaked via a Pickle Rick voice line
WB doesn't even own RWBY anymore
Wanted her in just so people could seethe, she would've been a guarantee if Tony and his cronies didn't decide to drip feed us 2 characters per season, especially after revealing they made Banana Guard in the span of a weekend (also soft-confirming that they barely QA test, though that was pretty obvious).
I'm still not entirely sure what caused the playerbase to fall off as comically hard as it did.
Leaned too hard on being competitive, maybe? Casual modes give Smash legs to grow a competitive playerbase. A raw competitive fighting game is always going to filter people once you start having to lab some stuff.
it played like slow dogshit after the relaunch, that's why it died.
I hated how the game played after the relaunch too but even before that the game went from like 200k or some insane number to below 1k in a matter of months
didnt feel like a complete game, dripped of amateurism at every observable point
and didnt really have that deep a draw of total content, if you werent down for the grind you could see all there was to see in like a weekend
whats a normalfag to do at that point, theyve hit side b as shaggy enough for a lifetime, next game
it was dog shit from every conceivable perspective. this isn't some obtuse mystery, the game was just straight up garbage carried by marketing / hype.
that seems like the most accurate answer, nothing to do but grind, no casual modes, not great as a competitive game
And even then the marketing was shit. Every "reveal trailer" had the same gameplay and editing and they completely ditched cinematics after Season 1. The Marceline trailer was a further drop from quality, haphazardly being stitched together by one of Tony's dicksuckers. A far cry from kino like Luigi entering Dracula's Castle or Kazuya failing to drop Kirby off a cliff.
There are multiple reasons, and I'm sure people will have different opinions, but I think that taking the game offline for a year between the beta and "launch" did more damage than anything else. There are already so many online multiplayer games out there, with new ones coming out everyday - it's hard enough to get people to check out your game the first time it launches. But to pull the plug on your own game and then try to sell "last year's game" for a second time, you would need a very compelling reason to get people to play your game again. And what Multiversus had on launch was just not any better than what it had during the beta, and in fact many would say the full launch version was worse than the beta. The game had lost all of its momentum, and what it had to offer on launch just wasn't enough to get people to come back and stick around - gamers had already moved on to other games by that point
I'm honestly surprised it died before they released a RWBY character, just so I can point and laugh at RWBY being in another failed game
and also probably jack off to, they did good work with Raven I could see them doing good work with Ruby.
Speaking as somebody who played a decent amount of it, I would say it is a combination of factors:
-Character selection was a bit wonky to start with, they really prioritized the weirdest fucking characters, and by that I mean they prioritized advertisements. I don't blame them for this too much, there was probably some amount of corporate meddling that insisted that they add literal whos like black adam to the game to advertise that movie nobody saw.
-Single player content was just absolutely fucked. It seemed clear to me that they never tested it on higher difficulties without co-op, this on top of requiring you to do it in co-op mode to complete certain goals. But there was no kind of matchmaking system for this, so if you wanted to do it, you would have to go to some forum or whatever to help you find people to play with, or make it MASSIVELY more difficult for yourself. Additionally, the way events were set up, you needed shit from the previous event to do them, so if you were behind, get fucked.
-Character balance was just absolutely fucked, and their "balance" patches were just as fucked. Some characters retained easy 0-to-deaths for months of patches, while I have clear memories of the patch notes for Jake more or less saying "This character sucks and we don't know what to do with him, but we don't want him doing the one good thing he does so we have made that one thing unusably bad to compensate, maybe next month we will fix him"
-The relaunch was an absolute fucking disaster to be honest. Even fucking ignoring the scummy shit they did regarding progress, they just fucked up a year of dev time remaking the game from scratch in a different engine, and ultimately creating a worse product. There were characters (like Velma) who frankly just did not work in the new engine, and needed a complete rework, but never got one.
-They monetized the game like it was already fortnight, and it sure as shit didn't earn the right to be that greedy.
-Character selection was a bit wonky to start with, they really prioritized the weirdest fucking characters, and by that I mean they prioritized advertisements.
Black "Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson" Adam being one of the first DLC characters tells you everything you need to know about Multiversus
bot
that's why you don't slow down games to catter to slow brained tards
It only dropped during the beta because it had literally 0 content.
At relaunch they had content but absolutely garbage shitty slow gameplay.
Wanting something in so people could seethe is code word for unironically liking the thing even though it's dogshit
they gave Nubia and Raven upskirts
Post examples.
Every Smash clone suffers from the same fate: they assume people will play because it features some ensemble cast yet it feels unpolished, lazy and devoid of anything that cultivated a Smash fanbase to begin with. Playstation All Stars, Nick Brawl, Multiversus, all a fundamental misunderstanding.
Smash Bros, especially Ultimate, is consistently one of the most polished and thorough fighting game franchises to exist. No amount of rollback netcode and competitive support can usurp that throne.
Is that why everyone who plays it seriously is fucking miserable
Melee will outlive ultimate thanks to rollback netcode and competitive support though
The only reason why the other games flopped is solely because
A) They're absolutely utter dogshit: Multiversus and Playstation all stars
B) They reek of low budget shovelware: Nick
Smash doesn't even do well anymore.
This entire genre was predicated on the multi-dimension craze of the 2010's. Back then, it was a neat trick to see Super Bing Wang Man fight Super Bong Bong from the Z universe, but not anymore.
It is nice to see big titles going belly up because of greed, it seems like milking whales nowadays is much harder. Civ 7 is going down the same route
Honestly I can believe Warner Bros nuking the game to rid of that bald faggot. I don't know why they would give him the full final say. Watch them bring it back but specifically without him. Wasted brand synergy and movie tie ins for Warner Bros for more stupid fucking Adventure Time characters.
Watch them bring it back but specifically without him.
keep huffing gleamium oops I mean copium
Don't remind me that that abomination exists
Honestly, I'd argue Nick Brawl has the worse roster
Why would anyone currently in Nickelodeon's target audience (11 and under) want to play a fighter where they don't recognize any of the damn characters
make a sequel to nick all stars
cut half the roster
announce dlc chars months in advance over leaks
disney is going to shutter this in favor of revamping fortnite's racing mode into being disney themed FYI. don't spend money on it, it's not sticking around.
Or an arena shooter
When was the last time Rugrats or Ren & Stimpy aired on Nickelodeon? Like 1999?
How is anyone under 30 going to recognize Reptar or Invader Zim?
