2D does innovate by adding to what's there and not throwing it out in the next game going right back to the gameplay of 1986 Metroid. Prime adds a one-time gimmick instead of a permanent new gameplay element that sticks around for future games. Also, Prime can experiment beyond the standards of Metroid because it is the spin-off series, 2D ever decides to do that and they might as well kill the 2D series and make the Prime games the mainline because at that point, 2D Metroid is no longer Metroid. You can take 2D Metroid in new directions but you better not ever forget that it's Metroid, it has roots it needs to stick to while evolving. Changing the appearance of Samus's classic suit is enough.

I'm waiting to see if they improved and fixed the problems of the previous games.First and foremost, I want the games to stop being for children. There should be a major difficulty spike that filters most children and game journalists, and to be honest it should start around the tutorial. If the tutorial boss is killing casuals left and right, then it would be a good start. The way Nintendo and Retro treated the prime trilogy makes me worried. They nerfed everything so hard because the poor casuals kept complaining, so fun bosses like the boost ball guardian were nerfed.

What would give me reassurance is if there's multiple difficulty modes, AND they did more than just change health and damage numbers around. I'm talking full on boss AI revamps, changing enemy formations, even making platforming more difficult. Think less "master mode from BOTW" and more "Master Quest from OOT".

Innovation is sticking around for more than one game, if you put something new in a game and it never shows up again, it's just a one-time gimmick used for that game, what Prime does. Prime games start off playing the same with little upgrade instead of giving Samus new permanent abilities and upgrades that will show up in later games. I feel like the Screw Attack was the only one in Prime along with Seeker Missiles.
