Open world games fucking suck

They're called "open world games" but in actuality it’s "empty world games". Vast areas of nothingness where you can enjoy the view for a true cinematic experience™, and optionally follow the obvious on-screen arrows/markers to your target if you maybe feel like playing. Players nowadays are ADHD-ridden and don't have the time nor patience to go exploring and finding shit, and they'll quit at the first game over screen or whenever they hit a roadblock.

Back in the day I could tolerate these types of game, it was a small niche and occasionally it was alright to play some sandbox game. But now everything has to be open world for no other reason than to justify you buying the newest PSwhatever. Fuck open world. Fuck it up its ass.

inb4 seething zoomers come to defend openworld slop because that’s the only type of gameplay they know since birth

I don’t care, suck my benis.

Truly the DSP era of gayming.
Ack, Ack, Ack.

They all look so boring and samey. And that fucking fog.

the only "open world" that's worth playing is Death Stranding unironically. You interact with the world constantly in that game

yeah

It's a genre. If turn-based games, rouge like, fps, RTS, platformers and hack n' slash games exist, it has a right to exist. Don't like them? Just don't play them.

It's a genre

No it's not you dumb zoomer. Never post again.

16.png - 168x100, 9.5K

I don't play them, doesn't stop me from remarking that they look boring as fuck, hence why I don't give them a look in.

Of course, you only posted ubislop
Good open worlds (TES, botw, elden ring) are fine

retard

posts slop

lmao dumb zoomer

don't forget yellow paint

walking =/= interacting

I want an open world rape simulator where I can hunt women through the forest

hmm

Skyrim

I'm sure many think the same for slop you consume.

Only game that did open world right was Skyrim, because they made it just small enough and just full enough that there's always something to do, explore or kill. Anon Babble will seethe about it but it's true.

and then are interrupted constantly by long shitty cutscenes.
Ironic that the game that finally made traversal interesting still fucks up.

No one remembers it because ER, BotW, and RDR2 made it irrelevant.

TRVKE

Sounds like you played bad games.

ledge.webm - 1280x720, 1.5M

Go play your linear games then, retard. Leave the lands of unbridled imagination and wonder to those that can appreciate it.

I need the dev to babysit and manage my fun in tight corridors with fast paced gameplay

Nah, i just wanna have fun and relax

Shut the fuck up retard

Death stranding is the exception. I'm definitely not biased towards my Ludo kino.

THIS THREAD AGAIN, AND AGAIN

Once thousands of years ago there were things called procedurally generated games that were also open world. They were not empty, but populated with lots of stuff. Sure after many hours it might get pretty repetitive once you've seen every single bit of assets and content the procgen was populated with.

For some reason this ancient technology from the 1980's has been lost to anyone but indie developers and so we have empty shitty open world games that claim to have lovingly handcrafted beautiful environments. Actually they're not jokes on you 99.9% of open world games have maps and terrain that were made entirely with procgen then stitched together with handmade setpieces. It turns out this ancient technology wasn't lost, it was just used behind the scenes to cut corners rather than implemented as part of the game because they want to give you as little value as possible for your money. This is planned obsolescence as a design philosophy in action.

Open world games are difficult to properly design and 99% of people fail at it.

Wrong. They're intentionally made exactly the way they are same as cigarettes were gradually made with less and less nicotine to incentivize you to smoke more. They want you to play through the $60-$70 product you just bought as quickly as possible and feel unsatisfied so you buy more games.

TES 2 and 3 are decent designed but 4 and 5 are horribly designed openworld. BotW is the prime example of how not to design an open world game and the open world portions of ER are the worst parts of it with the underground open world sections being halfway okay.

Many people including myself still play open world games from the 00s.

It being intentional or not doesn't change the fact that 99% of attempts at making an open world game ends up with terrible design.

That's exactly what they don't want happening anymore and why design philosophy has completely changed since then.
If you understand the reasoning behind it, then it becomes more than just terrible design, its terribly malicious design.

more than just terrible design, its terribly malicious design

Both cases mean it's a shit game I'm not going to play so it literally doesn't matter. It doesn't take more than an hour to tell if an open world game has shit design. I don't care if they make money off of other retards.

That's true for any game. Cheapness has a stench and the first whiff you usually get is in the art direction. The biggest red flag in that regard now is facescan. Why the fuck are you even in this thread anyway faggot? I'm not your cats paw, don't @ me ever again nigger.

malicious design.

Okay you got my attention with that and also Can you explain more about how exactly different new open world nowadays vs. procgen one?
Before I bought Space Engine and had fun with it quite a while, but since then they hadn't updated significant feature for the procgen. I intuitively understood that will be a new game or DLC if the dev plans to do that

Can you explain more about how exactly different new open world nowadays vs. procgen one?

Well they're both actually procgen to clarify. The difference is whether the procgen is part of the game itself, as with older games like Daggerfall. Or just kept as a tool in their dev kit for terrain generation to make static maps from. A game with procgen as a central feature promises not quite endless but close to it content, stretching its lifespan out, therefore increasing its value to the consumer.

Space engine isn't quite what I'm talking about, its not really the same sort of game that also has to procedurally create encounters, loot and quests from tables and stuff like that. Space Engine is probably more like the dev kit terrain tools used to make most open world maps, it doesn't have all the extra bells, whistles and systems to create populated real estate in a game about hunting monsters and getting phat loots or whatever.

"Open world" is a mechanic, not a genre.

They are just not meant for your generation OP. Open World games are from an era where games were about ambitious projects and a showcase of technology. Your generation is just about FoTM instant gratification, flashing colors ,memes, social media, etc. You just dont have the patience to enjoy a slow paced visual experience.

everything has a waypoint and fast travel

thats how openmeme died, exploration got murdered

Open world games are the epitome of "instant gratification"

They're designed for people with short attention spans

Glass armor looks great in OR, also I can't find a glass claymore fucking anywhere with the ascension mod...

Showcase your technology with interesting game mechanics or level design

Anyone who wants to walk around big empty fields can simply go outside and do that for free

and you can go walk down a hallway if that's what you enjoy

PLAYERS ARE ADHD

BUT ALSO WORLDS ARE TOO EMPTY FOR ME ME MEEEE

So you're ADHD riddled retard who can't stand the lack of constant stimulation. Got it.

The only kind of "open world" is when there's reasons to be zooming between different towns, caves, dungeons, etc. to accomplish tasks and build your character. Stuff like The World of Ruin in FFVI for example. I think more "open world" games would benefit but cutting the size in half and reducing the amount of bullshit menial garbage in between these self-motivated content.

Oh now I understand what you said, they give us the results instead of giving us the process.
But honestly I blame the modern normalfags audience though, because when they cannot tolerate process-oriented game (simulation genre is always a niche). If people only want the end results (why should I explore it?) then naturally open world will become closed world eventually, hence the meme "empty open world" because for them, that open world portion is meaningless, hence empty.

Me absolutely like to wander around those empty area even just to watch the procgen scenery. I hope devs in the future will allow players to wander out of bound, even though there isn't any content yet

empty.jpg - 1920x1080, 527.44K

Hallways are far easier to make interesting than huge fields with copy pasted content.

The issue with open world games is that the "content" is just the same crap copy/pasted over a huge map. Within just a few hours, you've seen everything the game has to offer.

Why would I want to do the same thing I do every day in real life in a video game?

I've been playing the same game for over 15 years and I still find new spots to do tricks in.

It's why elden ring is shit

i fucking hate over the shoulder bullshit. it works in combat, but when you're exploring it gets in the way. so obnoxious. why hasn't any dev done a dynamic camera where its above the player outside of combat, but then changes to over the shoulder in combat?

I got to that faraway hill, turn around and see the city
I think it's time to remake Oblivion and Skyrim with proper size cities and world, we have enough technology now. Starfield would be better if they allow players to really traverse the universe, with actually landing instead of menu-travelling

file.png - 1920x1080, 3.66M

why that's a very astute observation, in other news water is wet

ayo hol up

but other people don't cry about it like a huge faggot.

yea

What else can 40 year old Anon Babbleirgins do with themselves? They're too retarded to talk about anything besides low brow entertainment like vidya and even then their takes are just whiny bullshit nobody cares about.
