Well, I mean, look at Undertale as an example. At the end of the game, Toriel lets you stay with her if you want to. There's plenty of people in the real world playing the game and going "i wish that were me" at that part. Toriel and Asgore have a bad relationship there too, but living in the fantasy world of a game you like and understand seems desirable compared to whatever you have going on in your real life. It's not "oh god Toriel and Asgore are divorcced, that would be stressful to deal with", it's "i love Toriel and all of the characters in Undertale and i wish they were real and i could be with them". Perhaps a "grass is greener on the other side" kind of thing.

It's not clear how much Toby's autism with Undertale applies to Deltarune at this stage in the story, but if we consider Kris, Susie and Noelle are "the main characters" maybe Toby is extending that same privileged status to them. It doesn't extend to Darkners like Ralsei, Lancer and Spamton because the nature of Darkners is being objects that make Lightners ("real people") happy, making them marketable plushies is enhancing the narrative rather than undermining it.

Undertale Alphys is always operating on pretension. Everything she does is thoroughly dipped in some thick layer of HER own emotions over someone else's, to everyone ELSE's detriment.
