SS HD is actually a really good remaster that saves you a ton of time. The intro is faster, Fi doesn't stop you ever 3 minutes, and it's 60 FPS. Plus Hero Mode is unlocked from the start. The game still has problems with going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth over and over, but the dungeons are solid and it has some great bosses.

TP was great but only when played with a x4 or x6 damage multiplier. The game is just boring and toothless otherwise. Crazy how much a little difficulty tweak vastly improves a game.

I prefer 6x damage with hearts since it focuses on individual fights rather than being chipped away. Either way is fine. The best thing about playing with big multipliers is how a single heart container will take you from surviving two hits to surviving three and it feels like a huge upgrade. In a vanilla zelda game a single heart container has no immediate effect like that.

You should also run the 1/2 rupee gain cheat. It doesn't hurt progression; you'll have the money to buy stuff when you want it, but it makes it so you do actually keep every rupee chest you open which feels way better psychologically.
Also the "disable rupee notification" since that's annoying. Oh wow yellow rupee is worth 10? No way!

Well you can find the equivalent codes yourself. One warning for damage taken code. Maybe it's Wii only, but if you die at the snowboard minigame the game will crash. So save when you make it to the top of the mountain.

The HD max wallet is impossible to get without the Wolf Link amiibo, unless you're just using it with a tag.
You have to do a new Cave of Ordeals where you're stuck as Wolf Link to get it. I've never done it, just seems like a bother and honestly fighting 50 floors of enemies with Wolf Link sounds very unfun. I don't hate Wolf Link combat but after the Master Sword, I only used it when I absolutely had to because regular Link is just so much better.

What SS introduces isn't a big deal. I haven't played EoW but the Zonai have caused a huge amount of discourse and have overcomplicated things.

In Twilight Princess, a good chunk of the rooms I cleared out by just using arrows or bomb arrows from the starting ledge. The Darknut gank at the end is worse in TP because WW had more fun Darknuts to fight in hordes, while they are better for solo encounters in TP. Overall TP has better combat than Wind Waker because of the sword arts, but it's mostly just "here's 8 different ways to bully your enemies" except for the Darknuts where you have to use them if you don't wanna gamble on jump attack spam.

I like SS but the intro is bad, though not as bad as TP. The game has a very strong middle, and may have one of the best mid games out of any Zelda.
The game did some cool stuff. More impactful upgrades, minor customization (via the pouches

Bulblin archers do a full heart instead of a quarter heart (with green tunic and drained magic armor, they do 10 hearts with zora tunic)

Falling into the void or lava will do 4 hearts instead of 1

King Bulblin does 12 hearts of damage with all of his attacks on-foot. He will one shot you in Arbiter's Grounds

During the first wolf link section, 3 hits and you're dead.

Twilit Bloat's ram does 6 hearts

If you think that's crazy, you should see ALBW's Hero Mode. That game has 4x damage too, BUT the enemies in normal mode don't do pitiful damage like Twilight Princess. Rats will do 2 hearts of damage, boulders one shot you when climbing Death Mountain, and the Dark World? 8 hearts of damage when contacting any overworld enemy. The dungeon enemies aren't too dangerous though, and you can do any dark world dungeon in any order (except for the desert palace) so you can get the Blue Tunic ASAP and halve your damage taken.

People were lenient with BoTW because most people assumed it was a stepping stone and that they’d expand upon it in later games instead of selling the same game but with cars

SS being shit doesn't mean all the games that came before it were too. Journos talked about muh stale formula but a big part of the reason people didn't like SS was because of how poorly it realized that formula. Botw was an (arguably unnecessary) overcorrection. But people were still happy with it because there was this sense that it was nintendo experimenting and trying things out. People were willing to overlook its flaws and the things that it lacked compared to previous games assuming those would be ironed out in the next one. But that didn't happen. totk doubled down on all of botw's flaws and distanced itself even further from the pre-botw games. This made it clear that botw was not an experiment; it was the new formula. So, in addition to the disappointment from totk failing to live up to expectations, it also caused people to reevaluate botw on its own merits as the progenitor of a new kind of zelda game. And lots of people have come away from that deciding they'd rather go back to how things were before.

Yeah this is basically how I feel, though I never thought the "formula" was stale.

I went to the right, did a full circuit that led me to the left room from a floor up. As it turns out, the left path was a dead end that you can only open by doing said big loop.

The issue with SS is that over the years they were becoming extremely handholdy with everything to an insulting degree with SS being the straw that broke the camel's back. When people were talking about needing to "Change up the formula" they meant to make dungeons more like they were in things like ALttP, OoT, MM, LA, or the Oracle games instead of continuing like they have been since WW. Even WW had fairly solid dungeons that required you to remember where stuff or doors were.

ALBW shows that they don't really understand the issues and everything onward continues to show that. It's not about being able to do stuff in different orders or however you want. It's about dungeons feeling rewarding, dungeons feeling like they're actually causing you to figure out longer puzzles (Eagle Tower would never even be a consideration by this team for example), overworld exploration limiting you without certain sub items so that it feels like you're constantly unlocking stuff, and keeping old sub items relevant with puzzles and fights.

Give Capcom back the series or something, I mean hot damn. Make the BotW formula be its own spinoff formula rather than -the- formula.

So yeah SS killed the old formula because they couldn't find a way to build a game around it and simultaneously introduce new tweaks and features to keep it fresh. Nah Echoes of Wisdom was lame. My least favorite 2D Zelda for sure.
The amount of tedious repetitive rift sections makes the tears of light sections in Twilight Princess look quaint. They kill the pacing and they're everywhere.
The echo gimmick has its moments (summoning armies can be fun) but it ends up getting stale. The game feels too one note because it relies entirely on one gimmick. It doesn't feel like you're "playing" as Zelda, it feels like you're playing as Tri and Zelda is just a vessel. Having 2-3 other staves with their own spells would have done wonders.
There are certain echoes that are just completely broken and can beat every single puzzle. For a while it's the water blocks then you get the clouds. Very poorly balanced much like BotW/TotK.
The dungeons suck. I can't even come up with criticisms of them because they were all insanely forgettable.
Tri is easily the most boring companion in the entire franchise, no personality whatsoever.
Story just sucks. It has no juice. All the characters are lame, and the plot is unexciting. Huge downgrade from previous 2D games.

Soundtrack is on the whole very forgettable.
Visually it's an asset flip of the Link's Awakening remake while somehow looking even uglier. Characters are lifeless as fuck, no expressions beyond tiny smiles. Way less expressive than A Link Between Worlds or even the DS games, which were on much weaker hardware.
It tries to be a return to form in some ways but Grezzo was simply not talented enough to pull it off. They're a remaster/remake developer and it shows. They weren't being paid to be creative.

TOTK's content was spread too thin.
I blame Fujibayashi for trying to make the sky happen again, they should've focused on the "depths = dark world" thing instead of making three layers.

Aonuma simplified the formula, removing things he didn't consider essential (branch points where you can do a few dungeons in whatever order, for instance) and adding things that he thought made the intent clearer (every boss is fought with that dungeon's item). Just about every complaint people have with post-N64 3D Zelda is a complaint with the execution, NOT the formula.

WW shamelessly rips off OoT, it's just unfinished so structurally it only got 80% of the way. To say WW is more original because they threw in a dogshit triforce hunt at the end is dumb.
Item-wise all but two of WW's key items are ripped straight from OoT. The two being the deku leaf which is very similar to the deku mask glide from MM (right down to the flowers), and the grappling hook which is just a slight alteration of the hookshot (which is also in the game for some reason). The wind waker itself is just the ocarina again except you have to tediously control the wind (which was streamlined in WWHD).
Meanwhile TP has the ball and chain, spinner, gale boomerang, and dominion rod which are all unique. Even the returning items are used in fun ways. Iron boots are magnetic, clawshot was turned into double clawshot which is rad as fuck, and the bow with the hawkeye or bomb arrows is super satisfying to use. I can't defend the slingshot, it's dumb, but at least you don't use it for that long.
Story-wise WW is full of "member OoT???" moments. TP is also but at least its original elements are more interesting than WW's (like the Twilight realm). Tetra is basically just Sheikh again, except at least in OoT we knew Zelda as a character during the first act, Tetra's change to Zelda just ruins her.
People just see Epona in TP and think Epona = OoT so therefore TP is less unique. Even though Epona was barely relevant in OoT in the actual game, you could ride her in the small Hyrule Field and jump over the bridge to the desert and that's it. TP's Epona has horse combat, actual horseriding sequences during the story, and you can ride through a much larger portion of the map.

And then they did it again with TOTK though that one was more cinematic and there was more of a fight earlier on so while still being disappointing, it ended on a good note with the Zelda catching sequence. TOTK's story was still complete garbage though.

TP also has an original look. A lot of the designs are weird as fuck. Everything twilight related is completely different from OoT. It has plenty of visual callbacks to OoT but so does WW. If people can credit MM for having a distinct tone and style despite being an asset flip, then TP can also get that credit on top of having original assets. It's sure as SHIT more aesthetically distinct from OoT than TotK is from BotW.

The real answer is a 3 pronged approach. Many older franchises have 2 active styles of games: those based on their gameplay from the 8 bit and 16 bit eras, and those based on whatever big changes were made in the transition to 3d. Mario, Sonic, Metroid, and until BotW, Zelda being prime examples.
What I'd love to see is Zelda evolve this into 3 main styles of games. Classic top down 2d style, Switch era "open air" style, and also bring back the traditional linear dungeon focused 3d style. I don't think it has to be an either/or situation, but unfortunately I don't think that Nintendo sees this as a successful strategy.

They don't want the old formula, they want someone to hold their hands and appoint where they want to go, in the exact linearity the old formula had, even considering the old games never were as linear as they thought, maybe with the exception of Twilight Princess, but that game had bigger problems than that.
Honestly, the only things I could think Skyward Sword was superior than Breath of the Wild are the better defined antagonists and the soundtrack.
And I still recognize Breath of the Wild problems, especially with the breakable weapons and the lack of exploration over the lore of the series. For example, the Triforce basically turned itself into a decorative item on shields and uniforms.
