Companies are probably realizing now that reputation matters a lot more than seeing what they can squeeze out of these failing products. Ubisoft is a good example. Even if the financial loss didn't kill them, the offensive disaster of a game gave them a lot of negative press. Canceling these could lead to them having years without games since the (hopefully) corrected ones will take a long time, but it is better than sinking their brand. Maybe they'll also learn to make games that don't take a decade to make too.

1) A project that big can't just be turned on a dime, and was clearly in the bulk of development when "woke" insanity was the hip thing.
2) They had no reason to believe Veilguard would fail. The last DA game sold gangbusters, and swept the GOTYs for 2014. Anthem was a weird patchwork rushjob experiment that faceplanted out of the gate, and Andromeda was a glorified spinoff from the B-Team. Veilguard was the first time a mainline game in an established franchise from "real" Bioware had failed, and failed miserably. It the prior two were bloody noses, this one was a concussion.
3) With all that in mind, this is kind of "do or die" time for Bioware. This is all they've got left, and I guarantee that EA is going to be watching them under a microscope the entire time.
