They really saw people struggling to unlock characters with their system and said "okay, we'll make a play-to-unlock system but it requires even MORE grinding than the previous system, and it has to be in a specific order with the latest characters being unlocked last!"

Meanwhile Velma, meant to be a zoner, had her projectiles on a cooldown somewhere between a minute to 2 fucking minutes in a game where matches lasted like 3 minutes. Jake was so garbage that at some point the patch notes for him ostensibly said "This character is so bad that we don't know what to do with him, so we are nerfing the few things that are passable about him into oblivion so people don't play him while we figure out what we want to do with him"

1. Competitive players

A fraction of the total player base of Smash, but obviously the most dedicated to the game; hopeless slaves, unable to admit to themselves that Smash has been actively hostile to competitive play since Brawl.

The biggest demographic of Smash players. Deranged retards who are okay with playing through 10 fucking frames of input delay minimum.

3. Casuals

Normal people. These are the people you're describing who dropped the game long ago but occasionally remember it's installed on someone's Switch as social gatherings.

4. Rosterfags

The lowest of the low. Spend more time speculating about characters than playing the game, competitively or casually.

There are a lot of wi-fi warriors, though. Obviously there's no way to know actual player counts with Nintendo, but I guarantee that Ultimate still has a few thousand people playing online on any given day. But yeah, Smash is more of a event than a game at this point. Any platform fighter trying to out-IP it is doomed. It's hilarious that Viacom and Warner Bros. even tried, although I guess NASB1 was a financial success.

Nintendo has a brand that's consistently semi-cartoony.

It only looks that way because Samurai goes to the moon to focus on giving designs consistency. It's how you have Mr. Game and Watch not look out of place with Sephiroth and Yoshi. More importantly, Samurai has been working on the series for over 25 years. You don't get to Smash levels of detail and quality with just 1 iteration which is the problem with these companies who want to throw money at the projects and then get disappointed with the outcome.
