I bought F.E.A.R. since it was only 2 dollars and I always hear people suck off its gunplay and "REVOLUTIONARY AI", but good god this has to be one of the biggest examples of people parroting popular opinions to seem knowledgeable.
The levels are the same shit over and over again (dirty industrial area or offices) and its mostly just traversing hallways. The encounters are boring because you're pretty much always fighting in an enclosed space with maybe one flank if youre lucky. Enemies take a shit ton of damage unless you aim for the head, which is a pain in the ass because the most common weapons have terrible spread. I don't even understand how the AI is so amazing, they don't really do anything special other than yell "FLASHLIGHT!" and sometimes retreat. Oh, and the shotgun is 100% video game shotgun where it does jack shit past 2 feet.
Am I just missing something? Should I not be playing on the hardest difficulty?

F.E.A.R. is mediocre
20 years late to the party
I like it.
FEAR is way overhyped, but it's not bad for a playthrough. Guns are satisfying and I like those big old fake holes they put in the walls.
Cunny
Is this more of a Anon Babble topic?
Guns are satisfying
See, this is what I don't get. Maybe it's the difficulty setting but the guns feel really flaccid -- drilling a guy's head with either of the automatic rifles feels sloppy and almost as if headshots are RNG. The only weapons that truly felt meaty were the heavy stuff like the rod gun and the auto cannon. I did like the bullpup, but for some reason it barely exists.
Please, anon, I'm trying to have a video game thread.
Personally I don't mind tankier humanoid enemies in an FPS if hitting them staggers them and prevents from firing back. FEAR enemies are generally tanky (they can take a couple of Penetrator shots to the head and keep going with big nails sticking out), but that was never a problem to me. If you want accuracy, try dual handguns. You'll be surprised how precise they are.
Tavor is rare because it's really strong, it's one of the game's "sniper rifles" for some reason.
Oh yeah, and if you're using slow-mo it's really easy to melee enemies, and melee attacks are instant kills.
this has to be one of the biggest examples of people parroting popular opinions
I played for the first time months ago, and this phrase capsule my sentiment with this game so much.
So many years hearing about this a.i, played, and they are absolute retarded, most of the time they just run/walk towards you, and what doens't help is the level design, mostly one way coridors, about 90% of it, so basically 90% of the encounters is the same, stand behind cover and wait fo the a.i to run/walk towards you like a bunch of retards.
It worked literally everytime, i've beat this game on max difficulty, first time and died like 3~4 times the whole game.
stand behind cover and wait fo the a.i to run/walk towards you like a bunch of retards
I did two playthroughs of the game, both on Extreme, with slow-mo and without slow-mo (I unbound the key in settings). The game is more fun with slow-mo because it allows you to run into room and start gunning fools. If you try to play it "tactically", it kinda falls apart.
I played (extremely old titled revered for its new technology at the time) and (it seemed old and outdated compared to modern standards)
what a thrilling thread
now beat it without savescumming
hitting them staggers them
F.E.A.R. is really iffy about this, especially because some of the stagger animations look like a death animation, so I always end up dumping a few extra rounds into people.
try dual handguns.
I swapped out the handguns immediately becasue I assumed they were just the starter peashooter weapon, heh.
and melee attacks are instant kills.
Yeah I figured this out pretty early but a lot of the times meleeing a guy just left me in a worse position than just plinking from a distance. Again, I get the feeling playing on Expert makes the game less fun since you can't go crazy with all your options.
this
It's a ok/good game, with a very satisfying gunplay, but people overhyped the shit out of this game, jesus christ..
fuck off zoomer
It came out in 2005 anon
Shit taste.
Shit thread.
I swapped out the handguns immediately becasue I assumed they were just the starter peashooter weapon, heh.
I did, and I tried using them for fun (I would use dual handguns in Crysis also, where they suck), and they're secretly a very strong option if you like to go for headshots.
I feel like slow-mo and TEN medkits allow you to play fairly aggressively even on Extreme. Without slow-mo, it's another story.
Even compared to its contemporaries its meh.
You can tank a lot with medkits yeah (and I definitely needed to with those retarded flying robots, who the fuck thought that was a good idea) but melee is still mostly for the coolness rather than practicality. Especially if there's any enemies using the penetrator or shotgun, you immediately get domed if you're out in the open too long.
Melee is for corridors and small open rooms. Obviously you don't melee in a larger area. The drones suck, yeah.
you get outsmarted by a dumb a.i when you play like a retard running into a room full of enemies, it's not fair if you use your brain
Yeah, maybe on lower difficulties, while playng like that, but if you do that on the max difficulty, pretty sure you get instantly gunned down most of the times.
Well duh, melee is for close quarters, but it's better to just shoot the guy in the face rather than smack him and waste slow mo time bringing your gun up again.
Don't
I have no idea why you even linked to my post, nothing of what you typed has any relevance to it. No, you won't get "gunned down instantly" because Slow-Mo exists.
It shits all over Doom and Half life shooting wise
but it's better to just shoot the guy in the face rather than smack him
You don't do it because it's optimal. You do it because it's fun and cinematic, and the game becomes boring if you play it the optimal way, which is something you figured out yourself (sit in cover and wait for bots to shuffle from one anchor point to another). Bicycle kicking a squad in the face sometimes ends with your death, but usually it doesn't and it feels cool for a while.
Uh yeah I rode a horse today
It's okay but no where near the hype
like why wouldn't you just use a car?
apparently these things won battles and shit? no fucking way!
why didn't they just use tanks?
yeah whatever horses are way overhyped
Uo-
Half life
HL2 may not have slow mo but the weapons (okay, barring the pistol) definitely have more punch and the physics is a much better gimmick than slow mo. Also, you don't move like you shit your pants in HL2.
Sounds like the move is to play on normal then. I'm about an hour into Extraction Point and the level design seems better at allowing for more dynamic fights, at least.
I feel like the game is easy enough on Extreme, personally. EP is a bit harder, and PM gets really challenging even with slow-mo. You'll see.
muh AI
You chose to listen to hyperbolic praise that you know is obvious bullshit in other cases. The AI works well with the level design to make more fun combat scenarios than most FPS before or since. That's all. There is no need for exaggerating like 12 year olds.
muh levels
Yes they look samey and drab. There's an obvious disadvantage to designing levels like that, but the advantage to this is that it the game's decals and destructive effects become incredibly easy to spot and separate from the level geometry. One of the appeals to FEAR is that the entire environment is transformed by a firefight. If you don't find that visually appealing (as in you don't get a hard on watching the Matrix lobby scene or Hard-Boiled's opening) then the game might not be to your taste. It's a bullet time game. Admiring the visuals is one of the key draws.
muh shotgun
I just think you're wrong on this one. FEAR's shotgun is one of the most OP in FPS games.
And yes you should be playing on the hardest difficulty. This isn't even a discussion.
Let's be clear on what FEAR's contemporaries are:
COD2
Medal of Honor Pacific Assault
Doom 3
Half Life 2
Far Cry 1
Most people would probably agree HL2 is better than FEAR, but idk that the rest of that list is really all that much better than FEAR.
more fun combat scenarios than most FPS before or since
You say I'm exaggerating, and then proceed to make the exact kind of statement I was talking about.
as in you don't get a hard on watching the Matrix lobby scene or Hard-Boiled's opening
You're overselling the game's "destruction" by a lot. At most you get parallax bullet holes and some debris from explosive barrels and stuff, maybe broken glass. You're making it sound like the walls dynamically get destroyed and every prop gets gibbed in some way.
FEAR's shotgun is one of the most OP in FPS games
This is definitely placebo. People think it's OP because it gibs dudes when you're up their ass but can't do shit if you're any farther than that.
FC1 AI does what FEAR AI claims to do.
Most people would probably agree HL2 is better than FEAR
holy shit
I also played it recently.
I could see the intelligent AI when the enemy tries to flank you, but the level design is so linear straightforward that they never get a chance to actually flank unless you needlessly overextend.
The visual design is still amazing, it's the only reason I bothered to finish the game.
You fell for it again!
Maybe not better, but that's what I'm saying. It's only barely as good or worse compared to it's peers.
I think these people did more damage to this game than the people who didn't like it.
I went in thinking it was going to be some actual crazy shit a.i, but is literally slight above avarage for it's time, and easily exploitable.
The game itself is fun and the weight of the weapons is really good, but this game was overhyped to some god status, just like what op said.
and the shotgun is 100% video game shotgun where it does jack shit past 2 feet.
you didn't even play it
but the level design is so linear straightforward
This is what threw me off. There's occassional areas where you can manuever (and so can the AI) but a lot of the encounters felt like they took place in what was effectively a hallway.
The visual design
Like the aesthetics?
noooooo, sexy ghost girl, please don't make me cum balls deep inside your fertile womb
Was Becket gay?
Post a video of the shotgun killing a guy in 1 to 2 shots from a distance farther than length of your penis. I'll wait.
level design is so linear straightforward that they never get a chance to actually flank unless you needlessly overextend
EXACTLY, if you just sit and wait, every time, they just come at you in line, waiting to be gunned down.
Yeah, the graphics, atmosphere (apart from the weak horror), and the stark lighting.
This wasn't in the game. Was it?
FEAR 2
While the look of low poly normal mapped stuff and stencil shadows is peak SOVL, I think the game has a very boring look. Then again, so did a lot of games of that generation (Doom 3, Riddick). But the atmosphere is nice, especially when you're walking alongside the ATC building's windows and the music fades out momentarily.
You say I'm exaggerating, and then proceed to make the exact kind of statement I was talking about.
I'm not making any claims about it being da best eber. But yes being able to use the enemy's tactics, their awareness and surround sound makes for more engaging shooting than you typically find, nuDoom for instance. The game just runs into the same problem as Dead Space and Doom 3 where enemies have basically no variety on replay. I love FEAR but idk if I've finished it 3 times for that reason.
You're overselling the game's "destruction" by a lot.
You're reading hyperbole into what I'm saying. I'm saying the destruction effects stand out way more in FEAR than in most other FPS games if its caliber, which are so static that areas barely look any different after a firefight. I've always found retracing my steps after a FEAR firefight very fun.
People think it's OP because it gibs dudes when you're up their ass
If you think that's up their ass then you've never played Doom 3. It's OP in the sense that the game is balanced around having 3 out of however many guns at a time and players rarely trade out the shotgun because of how useful it is in most of the levels to most of the enemies.
Doom 3 has some of the coolest industrial design I've seen in FPS. All that glowing, rotating, hissing machinery casting harsh shadows. It's kino, even if the game itself is not. The only time FEAR had something like that was in the Vault itself.
Well yeah you should never listen to someone calling a game the best ever at anything. That's often someone who just hasn't experienced many games of that genre.
Nothing in a game is ever as good as its most vocal fans claim, and those people often alienate people who might enjoy it as you say.
it being da best eber
You said "than most FPS before or since". That's a really strong claim.
You're reading hyperbole
You compared it to The Matrix lobby scene, which has shit flying everywhere and all kinds of destruction going on. I'm just going with what you provided as an example.
because of how useful it is
It's only useful on account of being the only "close range" weapon in the game.
no cap it’s clunky and janky fr fr and no slide canceling I-I just can’t play this on god
I don't think that's true, at least for me, i hear about a lod of old games, i could say System Shock and fallout 1 and 2, as examples, heard that this old games was a cool and unique experiences, played recently, nad absolutelly love them, not even the jank of it's old nature hurt the experience for me.
F.E.A.R. is just way overhyped in general.
FEAR 2 is unironically a better game in every way, except for Alma being older. She was better as a little girl.
consoletrash
nah
That's a really strong claim.
With a pretty strong caveat as well. I don't think it speaks to FEAR being objectively great as much as it just outs a lot of other FPS for focusing on the wrong things and feeling stagnant in ways FEAR doesn't. If Doom 3, Half-Life 2, or Max Payne 2 had enemies that could lose your location and try sneaking around the tight spaces of the area that you could accurately locate on a dime with your eyes closed because of the sound system, then FEAR wouldn't stand out so much, but here we are.
You compared it to The Matrix lobby scene, which has shit flying everywhere and all kinds of destruction going on.
You got a better example in FPS games? Genuinely asking because I love that shit. And considering the other games listed above, this is something else that stands out more with FEAR.
She was better as a little girl.
NO ANON DON'T THIS IS A VIDEO GAMES THREAD
Can't wait for you zoomies to find out the wii version of Twilight Princess is good.
criticizing 20 year old games through the modern lens
lol
I think this largely just comes down to personal taste. There are people who would and have felt the way about System Shock and classic Fallout.
had enemies that could lose your location and try sneaking around the tight spaces of the area
You (and many others) say this but this hardly ever presents itself as an opportunity and enemies flanking you is nothing new.
because of the sound system
Maybe it's because I'm playing with EAX and all the sound features on and there's some kind of bug but it was extremely annoying that enemies were nigh-silent and would jumpscare me because the only thing I could hear is when they spoke.
Read the thread, anon.
this hardly ever presents itself as an opportunity
Werks on my machine. One thing is that the game is rarely hard enough to push players into these opportunities if the player isn't actively looking for them, but when it happens it scratches a very niche itch. Take that with the (relatively) minimal story and constant eerie isolating tone (things that scare away the wide general audience) and it's no surprise the game strikes a chord with certain players. There just aren't really solid games trying to fill that niche. Just look at how the Hitman series changed over time.
there's some kind of bug
Yeah that sucks. WB put out some patch recently for some reason and the only notable change I saw was limiting to 60 fps for some reason and it wouldn't surprise me of it broke shit.
EAX
Lots of games have EAX 4 but still don't do directional audio as well, especially as a gameplay mechanic.
