Is it me or is Josette one of the best characters in Kiseki? She manages to be a fun earlygame villain without being gay like Wald or Nome and her family dynamic is compelling. Only Garcia comes close. No need for edgy dark assassin backstory or multiple personality disorder, her base personality is sufficient enough to be entertaining. Just a tomboy piece of shit.

Her redemption is among the best because it isn’t some mass murderer getting away with everything (just some thief) and respects diagetics/internal logic as she pivots from airborne piracy to airborne delivery. Compare this to other characters who magically switch careers like that 19 year old CEO who’s also a master alchemist and get away with kidnapping children while the heroes treat her like a friend.

Her interactions with the cast are charming and funny. You have the constant tomboy beef between her and Estelle then the bond between her brothers whether it’s holding Don back from committing massacre, the middle brother teasing her about Joshua or the family as a whole healing and trying to turn over a new leaf. It’s cathartic to see her fully matured and on the right path in Cold Steel too.

It goes to show you don’t need to be raped 1000 times by DG cult or a secret Ouroboros/Dominion to be well written.

Sky characters actually had decent writing, the entire series fell apart during and certainly after the Crossbell arc.

Rean is like America, everyone is always seething at him but they cannot ever stop thinking about him. He truly is the greatest character in this series and Falcom made a GREAT mistake but moving away from him. Nobody really cares about Van, Lloyd or Estelle. REAN is the only MC in this series now.

First arc has a canon romance and it is the best one in the series. People like to joke about it going nowhere because they wanna see a pregnant girl in her early 20s, but whatever.
The rest are sort of harem shit. The Crossbell arc gives the MC his pick of ladies, including his dead brother's former fiance, which his dead brother himself encourages to go for
In total it's like 6 girls.
The next arc has like 12+ girls thirsting for MC cock and it's where most of the harem jokes and memes come from. But all in all Alisa gets main girl treatment the most in story-canon moments that aren't bond points.
The lastest arc is weird because they are kinda doing a canon romance alongside harem bullshit. I do think it has the hottest girls by far and they are all super special snowflakes: a movie star, an asian warrior princess, a robot girl, the granddaughter of this universe's Einstein among others.

Alisa was the most popular choice for a romance in 3 out of 4 Cold Steel games, though. Altina is the only one who ever beat her in CS3, however, so she's definitely the closest to a canon choice outside of Alisa if Falcom ever pulls the trigger and actually gives Rean a canon relationship. I highly doubt they will though, which means Rean and all his haremettes will forever remain alone since picking any one girl will anger the players that chose the others. It's Falcoms own fault for copying a harem setup from Persona, which are self contained games and don't have an overarching narrative.

Nothing beats Laura standing there with a blank look on her face, not even batting an eye, as Rean talks about regaining his friendship with the guy who (she believes, as does everyone else at that point) murdered her beloved father. The characters in Cold Steel feel like puppets who aren't real characters at all, they don't actually react emotionally or logically the way that they should given the circumstances they're in, and it really makes the games story and characters feel utterly fake and contrived as a result.
