Sengoku Rance is considered a classic because it has both really good sex scenes (and a lot of them) and because the gameplay is genuinely great. Because if you're going to write completely separate routes, you might as well make them different games, while in 99% of WEGs, the actual plot moves in parallel to who you're banging and as such doesn't change significantly. People hate replaying through piles of shared content to see the personal scenes, so it's far better and easier to just have the porn logic cover up the nonsensical part, and you can have a route lock much later in the game when people have actually gotten to know the girls rather then having to guess off the bat which ones they're interested in.

My problem with the game is that parts of it are genuinely guide-fu in order to get desirable results, and that a number of hidden variables should be much less hidden. Its one thing to keep running numbers like 'how much this nation likes you' as a vague concept, but during segments like the succession crisis the game desperately needed to be more open about "this character is at X position. favoring them in choice A right now will put them over the threshold to Y position. favoring them in choice B right now provides some points but not enough to push them to Y".

Also the part where simon is captured by the queen. I get that the early parts of the game dont have the same polish but holy shit fuck that part. If you play that blind and do a few steps wrong or DARE to not discover an event around town you are absolutely fucked and you wont even know it until it all snowballs 30 hours later.
