I did quick tests with the ones they supply using a scenario wherein I'm in the hall outside of my apartment and the neighbor is in his apartment. None of them could comprehend that the neighbor would have to actually come out of his fucking apartment to see and speak to me.
The "big name" models don't have this problem (generally). They can (generally) comprehend the positions you're in and what could logically happen. Claude's pretty much the best, does a good job of keeping track of multiple elements, but by god are you going to pay for it, and it isn't necessarily the most creative. I'm still testing GPT but it seems fine, not quite Claude but cheaper. Deepseek is my beloved however, because not only can you get it for free, but it's also reasonably logical while being fucking deranged. It is very obviously "worse" than Claude, especially if you're going for real storytelling, and it can fall into patterns and isms real easy so you'll have to do a little work to wrangle it, but it's pretty creative and I unironically find it funny

I've got an RTX 5090 and started messing with Kobold and SillyTavern yesterday for the first time since upgrading from my 3080 rig. I've tried a couple of models so far, but I'm having the best luck with DavidAU/L3-Stheno-Maid-Blackroot-Grand-HORROR-16B-GGUF. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Preferably something specific that I can grab from HuggingFace.

Which one do you erp with? Perchance was alright for a while but its a bit resistant to some kinds of plots.

The casuals I've seen seem to mostly stick with c.ai or yodayo. The former's model is decent and has a wealth of bots to use but it has various downsides such as the aggressive filter and having basically no memory. I haven't really used yodayo but it seems like it has mobile-game-ified use of good models (you get daily currency to use for generations) and no filter.
Personally I would recommend trying out janitorai because you can easily plug in openrouter or anything else and a model and then press default on the custom prompt and it just works. The default AI they have on the site isn't terrible but no reason to not just use a better free model.

Good luck though, text-gen is far more strenuous than image-gen, it's impossible to run anything as good as the strongest cloud models on consumer hardware.

i found it to be really good for logical thinking. like it has a tendency to go through your character's speech and analyze it word by word. loves abusing 'single quotes' for what you said previously and the prose can get dry but it's overall smart.

when i want some spicy shit or the ai to surprise me. honestly, 90% is too crazy but the 10% when it hits just right is absolutely golden.

cheap af, reasonably smart, and good for describing surroundings or environment, or as a way to transition to a different scene. mainly use it for storytelling filler.

haven't tested it enough but it feels decent. gives a different "perspective" than gemini, i found, and it doesn't have the dry logical prose so i like switching between the two.

Ultimately, it doesn't really matter how you format it, since the AI is able to read and interpret the text anyway. It's more what you actually write that is important.
Try looking at other people's bots and see what goes into sufficiently describing a character, then try your hand at making one yourself, and adjust things as needed

general tip, though, keep everything in third person for the character
you can be first or third person in your own messages, but keeping the character's messages third person stops the bot from getting confused
unless it's not a character at all, if it's a text game/ choose your own adventure set up second person works better

You'll find a lot of typos and grammatical errors with bot shit to be honest. I don't know how no one manages to proofread before they post. Have even found genuine mistakes like listing two different heights. Ones with high popularity on uncensored sites seem to be primarily just trashy shit for quick wanks so you have to skip through pages or search for something to find anything with a bit of elbow grease put into them. Possibly filter out smut altogether.
Not sure what would be a good example though. Could try looking at some of the chatbot generals on the site since they'll have guides in their OPs. I know there's ones on Anon Babble, Anon Babble, Anon Babble, and Anon Babble, not sure about others

On Anon Babble there are is a local chatbot general and a dynamic storytelling general. Basically for local chatbots you will want Kobold and SillyTavern. Kobold runs the AI model (in GGUF format), and SillyTavern hooks into Kobold's API to provide an interface for chatbots.
