XIII battle system is much better than XV, which is at least something good. I think XV's success is actually what killed the franchise; the game was marketed very well and sold accordingly, but it was such a shit product it turned off a lot of fans and people trying ff for the first time. Now the games struggle to sell, and this won't be fixed by going multiplat. The real cause is the damage to reputation done mostly by XV but followed up with mediocre Remake and bad XVI

There are many more subtle tracks between the big moments. I think the issue with just listening rather than playing the game and experiencing it organically is that the bombastic tracks supposed to highlight events between the lengthier time spent wandering the world, where the softer music is always present. I guess just listening to the area themes rather than the boss and battle music might help.

i liked 3 and 5 a lot because of job mechanics, bravely default was a good spiritual successor to them. i played 3 in like 2006 or 2007 on the original fan mtl using an nes emulator, then again when a proper fan tl hit, then again on the DS when i learned there was a port.
2 was only bad on the nes, the gba and later releases were fine imo, not great but ok
8 is severely underrated, sure the scaling shit's a bit jank but everything else is great
7 is probably my favorite but i didn't quite understand it back in 2007 when i played it, partially because i was 17 and partially because the tl was kind of iffy. probably going to do a full playthrough with one of the fan mods that retranslates it next year.

Best: FF4, Of the classic saga, 4 stood out the most as having everything it needed to be good, while the rest felt like something was missing.
Worst: FF2, the experimental leveling system was held back too much by hardware limitations and buggy. The story was in need of expansion to really make us care for the guest party members

Golden Age: FF6-FF10

Best: FF7, though every game in this age were very strong contenders. FF7 stood out with Square taking what they learned from making FF6's plot and giving us a story with more depth and emotions.
Worst: FF8, but I really want to stress that the worst game in this age is still better than some of the games in other ages. In the end, it still felt like you were playing a Final Fantasy game, even if the story felt contrived and the characters not as heartwarming

Silver Age: FF11-FF14 1.0

Best: FF12. This is unfortunately when Square began to lose heart. I would like to point out that 12 did not bring about the downfall. By contrast to later games, 12 was phenomenal to me, partly because I'm a big Ivalice fan and seeing it in 3D was great. The combat felt close to what I would expect a modern FF to be, moving away from the simplistic static battle scenes and involving more movement

Modern Age: FF14 2.0+ -FF16 and beyond

Since this age is still ongoing I cannot put any as best or worst. But I feel like this age moves away from the Final Fantasy formula. Good or bad, it's easier for me to admit that this age just isn't for longtime fans like me. Outside of the fanservice in FF14; FF15 and FF16 just don't feel like Final Fantasy games. But I will honorably mention FF7R is a nice step in the right direction

you call it a visual novel but i mean you could just as easily drop the first word there -- it's just written like a novel. i grew up reading four-digit-page-length novels and i prefer reading those to short stories, movies, etc., where things are very direct but to me often feel rushed.

Except the only “human” that could actually stand up to Meteion was 9/14ths of our good friend Azem who also needed Hydaelyns blessing to survive along with my great-grandson Zenos Viator Galvus who had Hydaelyns blessing too, except his was reverse-engineered in a Garlean laboratory. And he was a good friend.

The only good storyline in XIV ran from 2019 to 2020. It's time to let go.

oh, don't get me wrong I love FF14. My post was just too long so I couldn't really write much about it. However, at the end of the day the Scions just don't make up for a band of heroes that reluctantly agree to come together to fight some opposing force. They feel more like groupies than individual characters with their own desires, offering different viewpoints to something happening in the story but not necessarily contributing anything of value. The one exception being Graha in ShB, but he's not an official Scion yet. Arguably some of the best characters in FF14 are the non-Scion story characters, like Hien in Stormblood, Emet-Selch in Shadowbringers, Hythlodaeus in Endwalker.

on the other end you have first person shooters, fighting games, racing games, etc., where you're going to have the same experience.

In those games, even when the campaign is entirely linear, you have differences and choices by virtue of varying play styles. Using a car with better acceleration but worse handling, choosing to use shotguns and SMGs and rush in for close quarters encounters instead of staying back and peeking with a rifle, playing a character with a fast, aggressive play style instead of a technical zoner. None of this exists in FFXIV. The functionality of a Reaper, Ninja, Dragoon, Bard, Pictomancer, Red Mage, Dark Knight, Gunbreaker, and Monk are all entirely identical. You don't adjust to an encounter based on your job, it's all handled in the same way. That is what I mean by the absence of choice. In every sense, you are following a linear script of binary pass/fail checks.

I explained how choosing different guns changes the way that you engage with an encounter in a linear FPS. Having a shotgun is meaningfully different to having a slow-firing rifle, which is meaningfully different to having a short-ranged, fast-firing SMG. Picking a different job in FFXIV does not do this, you interact with the script in the same way regardless of your job.

entirely rework the Astral subplot so it actually makes sense and fits into the story as a whole

Meanwhile, there is virtually nothing you could do to make XIII good. Literally everything about it is bad, from the design to the combat to the story to especially the characters and their relationships.

Objectively X-2 is the best game in the series mechanically. Story, art direction, the rest are subjective. In terms of story I like Cecil and Kain, but the game itself is ancient and shit. FF7 is a nice mix of dated, style, and gameplay that comes together into a very nice "singular" experience when you ignore everything else associated with it. FF 16 looks interesting to me, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. FF7 Remake is very mid, easily on par with Dirge of Cerberus, story wise it's a pile of trash. FF9 is has a haunting atmosphere and presentation, but game play is somewhat stiff. FFX makes me want to shoot myself in the head given how the first ten hours of it almost aren't even an RPG, but a cutscene you orchestrate. When it finally decides to become a game it's a so so turn based game with a needlessly complex leveling system.

FF1's ost aint bad by any means, 13 just has some more memorable tracks for me like The Promise, Defiers of Fate, Blinded by Light, Saber's Edge, Lake Bresha, Sazh's Theme, Will to Fight, Fang's Theme, Dust to Dust, Fabula Nova Chrysallis.

As for the characters, no disrespect to FF1 but its a party of nameless mcs with a very simple plot, Garland is cool I will say that, I like him more than any antagonist in 13 but from the main party from 13 compared to 1 by default just has more interesting main party members since they actually have some relationships to each other and some character growth wheras 1 doesnt have any (i dont mean this in a disparaging manner, its just a product of the time it was made in)

I found it pretty fun overall, the story is definitely not the best but I like Clive as a character more than any of the other characters in the games in the lower tiers except perhaps Cecil, and since he was a big part of the focus of the story I enjoyed everything related to him. The gameplay is also quite fun for me (albeit in the latter parts of the game it began to get a little bit repetitive, I also havent played the DLCs yet so I dont know what they've added to the game with those). The music is also pretty good with some stand out tracks like Away and Find the Flame, I wouldnt say its Soken's best work but its pretty solid overall.
