I imagine part of it is really loving the source material (and MyHouse's author definitely does if all the jokes relating to Doom modding are anything to go by), and at least in this case surprising people with what the guy accomplished in ZDoom's engine. Putting up a mod on the Doomworld forums that sells itself as a simple house map that turns out to be a huge labyrinth containing surreal and liminal horror accomplishing things people never thought to do before in the engine attracts more eyes than if it were an indie horror game on Steam.
