Merchant classes aren't common because it requires devs to actually balance the economy of a game and have a good grasp of balance in general. If it is already trivially easy to make money in the game or money/items aren't useful for battles, then a merchant class would be redundant outside of being a reflavoring of fighter or mage.
A class whose contribution is making the party gain more money can definitely work mathematically, since money and items is one of the balancing levers you have as a developers. You just need the money a merchant contributes to have as much of an impact as a knight's damage or a cleric's healing. Very easy to conceptualize when you compare a cleric spending MP to do out of combat healing and a merchant spending the money they make on items to heal out of combat.
The other problem a merchant class would run into is that the average person is a retard who will likely hoard the extra money and not realize it is a resource that should be used as a part of the merchant's power budget.
