Most mid-sized devs do that and the audience still doesn't support it. What they really need to do is make streamer-bait games. Once that gets popular, use the money from that to fund your unique and quirky games that you want to make. Pretty much similar to what AAA does to fund their one-off games that don't sell as well. You always got to be aware that an IP can die for whatever reason so you've gotta create the next big thing to take their place just in case. Support your franchise as long as financially possible and switch it to your next big IP if that stops bringing in the revenue. Make more IPs that are possible candidates to replace that and bring back old IPs after some years of absence to see if you can revive them again. Manage this cycle of IP death and rebirth and you should still be going in the video game industry for a long time. You should not hinge the future of your studio on just one game or franchise being your only savior. You need multiple kingmakers or just big gacha money maker to keep you afloat. Most don't have the latter so you've gotta do the former.

They've been dabbling in new IPs for around a decade now, but the ones that managed to pull sequels (Witch series, Yomawari, Liar Princess) were all niche, and the others like Mad Rat Dead (play Mad Rat Dead), Bar Stella Abyss, and probably some other games I've never heard of were either glossed over or didn't stick the landing.

Soul Nomad and Makai Kingdom were great. Good memories playing them. ZHP Unlosing Ranger as well but I hated the angels one.

If you run a full generic party and give them shit weapons/armor then keep your levels evenly distributed and the same of the current map or lower, and ignore item world after the tutorial, you will begin to enjoy the story maps because your party is in actual danger of getting wiped out.

The thing about disgaea games is that main character units are strong as fuck, and any character can snowball levels ridiculously fast if you let them, which can lead to a single unit seamlessly 1 shooting everything in every story map while they get tickles for damage if any.

Makai Kingdom gets a proper remaster with updated visuals and more content and gameplay refinements
