What would it require for you to switch from Windows to a Linux based operating system?

What would it require for you to switch from Windows to a Linux based operating system?

Photoshop, I thinks that's the only thing stopping me from dumping windows permanently.

I already switched like 6 years ago (best decision of my life) but I think as soon as pajeetsoft locks their OS behind cloud/subscriptions there will be an exodus of normies to macs and linux

I need to buy another SSD to backup my shit. I only have one drive. I'm so fucking done with pajeetshit it's unreal.

I would need every single one of my games to work out of the box

If it looked and worked exactly like windows

it just werking

but it just werks!

nope

Planning on switching soon. Have some uni stuff to finish before i do so, but im looking forward to not using any microsoft products anymore

which ones dont work?

$500 wired to me every week

Vista did it for me.

Do nvidia drivers still suck ass?

that nvidia works and that it includes a secondary storage unit is not so stupid (only steam os has proven not to be so autistic)

Linux is fundamentally garbage and there is nothing that can be done about it. Let me know when the open sores community decides to be sane and focus on at most a few distros, make GoboLinux's file system the standard, make a single display server standard and integrated into the kernel, integrate a NT compability layer into the kernel, have a stable API and ABI, ditch package management as a concept and have a decent portable executable format. Hell would sooner freeze over.

my art programs working on it.

At the moment? I dunno, probably some fangames I have downloaded. But I'd need an assurance that every single one is gonna work

Windows would need to get in my way with stupid bullshit more often than Linux. In other words, they'd have to release Windows 10. They don't need to go so far as releasing Windows 11. That would be overkill

a proper desktop
no, one that barely works won't do, I'd be moving to W11 if so
no "ifs", no "buts", a proper desktop out of the box is the only thing that will move me to loonix
I don't mind the CLI mind you, in fact I rather enjoy it, I just want a fucking proper desktop
don't @(You) me if you don't know what a proper desktop entails, ie. you unironically believe current alternatives are okay (they are most definitively not)

Honestly, if I knew about proton and the steam deck sooner, I would have switched earlier.

Why would they integrate bunch of bloat into the kernel?

a decent portable executable format

Appimage seems fine if you are into that sort of things

Frontal lobotomy.

windows 11 is becoming too much of a botnet

Good image editing software. (no, gimp 3 is not good image editing software)

I'm 33 years old and no longer have the desire to learn new things

so probably never

100% compatibility. I don't want to think about what games or software I can run that is commonly available on windows/mac but requires workarounds on linux. For now I'm fine with wsl

It working without having to watch a 1 hour tutorial by some jeet that fails to explain half of the stuff anyway

You and i both know that proper desktop is not possible on linux by design. You either take gnome/kde as is (forever moving target mess with questionable defaults), build your own monstrosity out of window managers parts bin or give up. Thats your options. vaxry, save us, you stupid weeb autist, make hyprmeme an actual terminal centric desktop ecosystem

welcome to 30 years ago

you have no idea how good chatgpt is for teaching you how to do stuff in linux

xfce just works

It would have to be completely plug and play and EVERYTHING would have to work as well and easily on it as it does on Windows.

But that's what Linux users like the most.

meme.png - 443x606, 426.62K

until it gets something wrong and you end up with a bricked system on your hands

Software combability and any other answer is retarded. Hell, I'd even begin to configure Gentoo if it ultimately saved me effort through having better software.

this is what i said about windows when using mac

I'm gonna switch to linux this year when MS drops support for win10. I fucking absolutely 100% despise everything windows has changed since 7. I would have stayed on 7 forever if i could have.
My problem is that I'll need to learn how linux works in order to use it, and that will take time and some degree of frustration.

I always made fun of linux guys my whole life as wallflower hipster nerds, but we're finally at a point with Microsoft that every criticism they ever had is objectively true. I can't fucking handle Windows anymore, this onedrive/edge/%roaming% hellscape is apocalyptic.

Autodesk support / compatibility
Adobe support / compatibility

and other assorted 3D related applications

I don't give a fuck about video games

Linux isn't that difficult if you don't find the idea of using a terminal intimidating. It's just getting to the point where win11 is so ass it might be worth the switch.

11 iot ltsc is indistinguishable from 10 iot ltsc aside from the explorer skin

It is though.

isnt photoshop a webshit subscription for years now due to mac/ios? you dont need windows just internet. same with ai cooming you dont need a rtx 5090 just anything with internet like your phone.

Id have to develop some sort of mental disorder

Every single game I have being playable without needing to do some weird shit, regardless of it's some indie or triple A or an RPG maker, unity and all that.
Oh and probably most of my softwares working there, wouldn't want some of my python scripts or stuff like Adobe Photoshop & Premiere breaking on me.

A way to easily transfer over all my save data from all my shitty porn games

My problem is that I'll need to learn how linux works in order to use it, and that will take time and some degree of frustration.

not really, and you just use an llm if you have any questions on how to accomplish or fix something.

Adobe support

Unless SteamOS somehow takes 80% of the market, it's not happening.

Probably will try it at the end of the year.

Maybe, might need to fuck around with wine and wine prefixes if it's not on steam, but should work.
I've gotten the most stubborn of RPGM titles and obscure nip hentai games working on my end with enough determination, but it does take a bit of effort some times when you run into something that doesn't work in a new way.

if it's renpy slop then it's all located in a single folder iirc

The same programs that windows has
The same games windows has
Good font rendering
Not having to troubleshoot my PC everytime there is a game update
Driver compatibility with latest hardware
Good Nvidia driver support, DLDSR doesn't work on linux
Etc.

The list could go on, there is so much wrong with linux.

wouldn't want some of my python scripts breaking on me

pretty funny that you think python is gonna work even worse on linux. using python on window is fucking torture

Linux is only appealing to moralfag tech vegans that care about FOSS. Or Anon Babbletards that fell for a meme.
If you have problems with Windows but are too dumb to fix them you are too dumb for Linux.

Once Windows 10 support drops, I am switching. I barely play online games, with Helldivers 2 being the only one currently, so anti-cheat won't be a problem. I just only have experience using Linux servers which are extremely barebones, and there are 10 million distros and options for desktops, which is too much. Some coworkers who know what they are talking about have pointed me in the right direction though, so I'll be messing around with boot disks and seeing what I like.
I mainly play old games anyway.

Oh, I figure it probably works better in this case, I was just giving some broad example of all the stuff I use regurlarly.
I have been thinking about moving to Linux a few times already when talking to a few people in other threads before but I'm kinda still sitting on it, guess I need to see something happen to make the jump.

The release of Windows 8

This has been the absolute truth until now. We'll see if it remains true with Windows 11.

Make it easy to use like Windows, implement more driver support and make it less trans.

everything working out of the box like windows, I've had to use linux multiple times and whenever I do I want to kill myself because it's so fucking unintuitive and overcomplicated

linuxchad here
I don't participate in data gathering surveys :^)

Maya, nuke, houdini all have linux packages. GPU renderers too. blender is pretty good as media combine btw
Besides being adobe slave and doing a lot of CAD work i don't see a lot of showstoppers for 3d work in linux.

Yeah, Python on Linux is pretty cool
It comes pre-installed and it is interpreted language anyway
Plus with tools like virtualenv, pyenv and pipx backward compatibility is trivial

If you think Windows versions EoLing means that they stop working or you are going to immediately get viruses you are too dumb for Linux. Use the oldest version of Windows that your hardware supports.

Don't.
I am beyond tired of seeing drooling retards try to move to linux, uninstall their desktop because they couldn't read 2 lines in a terminal screaming "RETARD, YOU ARE GOING TO UNINSTALL YOUR DESKTOP, DO YOU REALLY WANT ME TO FUCK YOUR SHIT UP?", and complaining that the system is the problem.
If you are a retard, and that's fine it's not your fault but just be honest about it, don't use linux, because it's not meant for retards, it's meant for programmers, server hosts, and techno hermits that hate all the shit you have to put up with when running windows like forced updates and random performance degradation over time.

so people who don't want to get a degree in their os to have a decent time with it can use it

I dual boot. Mainly because c# is a pain to use in linux land. I do prefer vim/gdb over visual studio

based

I am too lazy to switch and I don't really see any reason to use linux to begin with

it's not meant for retards

You say this but you can't figure out how to check a box to disable updates and you think there is such a thing as "random" performance degradation.

That's kind of a touché, actually. A guy that's afraid to stay Win 10 a little while longer should be wary about moving to Linux.

a click-click-click zero-fuss installation windows offers

a run-on-windows-to-install-linux.exe for easy switching

If you have problems with Windows but are too dumb to fix them you are too dumb for Linux.

genuinely, anyone itt who hasn't figured out how to get third party windows 10 security updates and remove shit like cortana would commit suicide the moment they see their first inevitable linux driver error

The only problem I have is for DJ-ing, so my laptop is still dual boot. All other computers in my home and business are all Linux.

CAD and viz are my biggest problem, I rely on AutoCAD, Fusion360 and UE/Keyshot. I wish Blender could do true CAD.

There's valid concerns with W10 that weren't a thing back in W7. Microsoft can, and probably will, send garbage updates to W10 users to nudge them into 11.

It's funny how linuxfags never consider android to be linux, you know why?
Because it works.

Not all but it mostly is, I might have to look into that

that's basically how you install ubuntu or mint nowadays
the hardest part is disk partition which is universal for both windows and linux

I'm not a retard, I'm not paying a subscription for these none services. You're basically asking why I don't replace my gaming library with geforce now

I know people who still use win 7 safely you just have to not be a total retard

I only use my pcs for work, porn and strategy games

go and stay go, mobilefag
this is big boy PC neighborhood

You know what, I'm installing macOS. That's Linux enough for me.

You say this but you can't figure out how to check a box to disable updates and you think there is such a thing as "random" performance degradation.

he doesn't know

Microsoft hasn't had a competent development team in decades.

may as well just take win11 at that point since it's desperately trying to be macos

SteamOS is basically Android for PC

I'm installing

what a masochist

well, vidya.

What would it require for you to switch from Windows to a Linux based operating system?

The annihilation of the obnoxious Linux community.

I do but Android lacks desktop programs
If Linux gets mass adoption on desktops as well that would mean better software support specially for desktop

I need Linux to do [unrealistic and vague requirement that not even Windows meets]

Every single time.

doesn't switch to win 11

debloats my win 10

woah that 10 minutes of effort was way harder than putting up with all of linux's bullshit

SteamOS runs games better than Windows does

have to emulate windows processes to run games

So you want me to take a machine with hardware that was made to work with windows and fuck it up and still try to emulate using windows.
What's the fucking point
This is like being a tranny and cutting my dick off and then putting on a strap-on anyway to have sex
no thanks retard, but you can continue being the one guy in the friend group everyone secretly fucking hates when we try to play a game and we have to wait for you to spend 2 hours to figure out of it even works

But I'd need an assurance that every single one is gonna work

You're asking for something that's not even possible on Windows. They might not work for many reasons.

I have a steamdeck and it just constantly crashes after long gaming sesh even the verified games, not that those checkmarks even matter

fair enough.
I mostly play ms flight sim and assetto corsa. I wonder if my controllers are supported.

This is like being a tranny and cutting my dick off

Someone is speaking from experience, I see

Freecad and opencad exist and you can run UE on linux dunno though if you should, but yeah, i can see how its a non-starter.

just use ltsc and shutup10. its as shrimple as that folks

Your brain must be prematurely aged then.

if you're using an ancient version of photoshop then why care for windows? thats the whole point of the webshit sub, to lock out linux.

If "performance degradation" means Windows rot, that has always been a thing and it isn't random.
If you meant performance regressions from updates, Windows is becoming more like Linux in that regard.

Doesn't old Photoshop run well under Wine?

another thread of loonix troons telling you it works and it's perfect and just learn to use it chud

no, I don't need to use linux to play vidya, fuck off.

gets pwnd by rajneesh because you didn't install the latest release that still actually gets security updates

eventually stops getting driver updates

eventually stops being supported by developers

eventually have to move over to the latest version

will eventually move to the latest version anyways and cope about it not being as bad as the next version coming soon

Anyways, enough about windows 7 and XP.

What would it require for you to switch from Windows to a Linux based operating system?

100% compatibility wil all Windows programs without me needing to configure anything. Also the distro should look exactly like Windows XP.

I've already switched to Loonix a few months ago. Win 11 is gigacancer filled with telemetry goyware.
If you have a 30 series RTX card at the very least then the open source nvidia drivers are pretty good. If you have an older card you can't use those and then it's ogre.

have an old monitor that defaults to 4:2:2 pixel format

on windows it takes a couple of clicks to switch to 4:4:4 and it works perfectly

linux on the other hand simply won't let you change the pixel format, so if you want to do that you need to "hack" the kernel, and apparently if you have a multi-monitor setup even the hack won't work

Why does accomplishing menial tasks on troonix always require an extraordinary amount of effort? And why do autismos take pride in it?

You fail to see the problem with this suggestion?

less trans

something something pride flag in M$ taskbar

one dude says it and apparently represents everyone

meds

Nope
Pre-Adobe CC photoshop works mostly fine if you know how to use the tools rather than bank on AI doing it for you. Biggest hurdle is compatability with more modern image formats. Premiere and Audition similarly so.

Whats this meme about nvidia not working well on Linux? I have a gtx 1070 and it just works.

switched to Loonix a few months ago

Me too. I snapped when shitdows 11 set me a TIME LIMIT on how long i can delay the forced update. Imagine living in a society where you "buy" (pay money to rent a licence for) a product and it sets you forced limits on what you can or cannot do with it. Fucking piece of shit. Im much happier spending time learning on how to use mint even though some new things took me up to several hours (only for the first time though).

I'm using ancient Photoshop but even then, when I look for examples of people using it or setting it up there are basically none. Nobody uses Photoshop on Linux in any professional capacity. If I run an old version through wine can it actually handle 8k+ images with 500+ layers? Does it crash more often than windows? Are all the basic features working as intended? Do graphics tablets behave as intended? I don't have the time or energy to test that shit and basically everyone who uses Linux is some freetard who thinks gimp is a valid alternative because their usecase is resizing images.

In general I get the impression that Linux users have no hobbies and have too much spare time so tinkering with an OS sounds like a productive use of their time

one dude

it's the same, every single fucking time, FUCK. OFF.

50% of the time Fedora wants to install an update, the nvidia drivers bricks the entire system

And why do autismos take pride in it?

troon niggas unironically believe having to google how to do trivial shit makes them 150 IQ
if they only knew KEK

I'm already on linux but I'm super coping about this + clip studio paint. If amd gpu partitioning isn't here soon, I think I'll build a vfio setup.

that I don't have to troubleshoot every fucking game I want to play every evening when someone's fucking dependency breaks

And why do autismos take pride in it?

they need to feel smart I guess

People suddenly turn into professional graphic designers when asked to switch to Linux.

i click add game, i select the exe, and then i run the game from my launcher

Why does accomplishing menial tasks on troonix always require an extraordinary amount of effort? And why do autismos take pride in it?

It's the only thing they got. Open source "community" always opposes features that improve usability because if their shit was actually usable, they'd lose their secret club.

Wayland support is fucked if you use an older Nvidia GPU, ougibro
For me it was every update installing some stupid shit or Windows deciding to replace my drivers with shittier generic ones

professional graphic designers

I just like to edit videos and make high quality memes so I use Adobe Photoshop & Premiere pretty often.
Premiere is pretty dogshit unlike Photoshop but I've used a few alternatives and they all suck massive cock but it's the least bad of the bunch.

If there's one thing I really like about Linux, it's that I can script installation and updates of programs. Whenever I reinstall Windows, I have to locate a couple dozen programs that I need, download them, install them, and then go into settings of each one and configure them. With Linux, I just have a script that downloads the newest version of everything and replaces all their config files with mine.

For whoever isn't baiting: if you have no issues with windows, you should probably not switch.
Using linux *will* require you to learn something new.
For me it required programming environments and the windows terminal experience being a nightmare. I ended up using WSL2 so often I started interfacing with my windows files through that as well. Then I just switched.

I know people who still use win 7 without issues lol

Nvidia driver support and a definitive answer to X11 v. Weyland.

What I love about Windows is the driver support and the ease of use.

Then start a new project that solves that. The tools are there and they're free. If there's a real interest in your distro people will join you and you'll change the Linux desktop. What's stopping you anon?

I need the following:

Outlook

Photoshop

Reassurance that my vidya will work without any problems

Give me that and I will immediately switch and never look back.

Why do people talk about switching like it is an impossible task or something?
Dual booting is fairly trivial thing to do, Ubuntu installer does everything for you in few clicks
If something doesn't run on Linux you can always just boot back to Windows

DVR is better NLE than premiere. I wish i was joking.

I just want to finish my game before I do. Everything I use for it works on Linux, I just don't want to risk any hiccups now.

I find that dual boot is borderline cope. Having two PCs is a more sane thing to do.

How many Linux threads do we need? I mean I'm not complaining

borderline cope.

less cope than WSL or virtual machine
The only real downside of dual boot is that some disk space allocated for Windows partition and disk space these days is cheap

Switched after windows 7 died. I'm occasionally reminded how fucking bad windows is nowadays and it always surprises me

Linux users just use different software over outdated Photoshop. Krita for example, for drawing. Personally replaced Photoshop Lightroom with RawTherapee.
Like you have to be a real weirdo to obsessively try to run Adobe products on Linux even if you can. If you're that attached to it you just run MacOS or Windows and buy a subscription like a normal person.

if you're going to have dual boot most people would rather just run windows since it'll cover all their use cases and nobody wants to juggle with a gimped OS.

Microsoft ceasing to offer me enterprise versions of Windows, I guess. So I'll just keep using Enterprise Windows and being superior to you whiny peasants who suffer from a version used only by people with brain damage.

Not having to fuck around with distros and shells and other shit like that

When I upgrade to an AMD GPU or when Nvidia starts making Linux drivers that aren't complete dogshit. I dual boot Linux on my laptop, every time my system won't boot its ALWAYS a problem with the Nvidia drivers. Also Vulkan and OpenGL applications just perform worse than in Windows, the only reason being that the Nvidia drivers on Linux are complete ass.

krita fucking sucks. The only open source software that isn't some hobby tier cope replacement is blender and even then blender is full of the same issues as linux itself where a simple 1 click action in a proprietary piece of software takes 5 in blender. Linux has a shitty replacement for everything if you're a kid or a casual user, if you make money using any piece of software it just isn't good enough.

Then don't use Linux, it isn't hard.

for linux to perfectly support 3 decades of windows games and every new game

and for them to solve dll hell and stop this retarded flatpak shit

nobody wants to juggle with a gimped OS.

would rather just run windows

funny because windows is a gimped OS
One can run Linux alongside Windows and just see for themselves how more quiet, snappy, efficient and less intrusive their PC instantly becomes
But if that person doesn't like the experience, they can always just delete Linux, it is not like Linux has some cancellation fees or some other corporate nonsense

I make money with krita drawing loli butts

dll hell

that's windows-only
nix does solve it

based
coomers deserve to be milked out of all their money

I already did, because I was fed up with ads being added to Windows 8. Wasn't even worth pirating. My Win7 pc died and I upgraded to Debian and it's been great.

i need someone to finally make a program that can install all the shit required to play vidya

inb4 muh tutorials

inb4 linux gives you control, you pleb

yeah i dont need control when i just wanna chill and play some Call of Duty or some shit

What's DLL hell?

Could you give me examples of such actions in blender? I want to try learning 3d and im considering my options

for linux to perfectly support 3 decades of windows games

linux has better support for old windows games simply because it can run games that require DX7 out of the box

retarded flatpak shit

But flatpaks do solve DLL (rather .so) hell and they are awesome. What is not to like about them? You can easily sandbox your programs and don't care about them breaking something on your OS

The people that say Krita is a PS replacement are larping faggots that never use the software. It's not anywhere close to the same type of software. Krita is an animation-focused program. Photoshop is a photo manipulation tool. GIMP is the FOSS equivalent of PS and the G stands for Garbage.

It already exists, it's called Lutris.

that's why you have to install bazillion versions of vc redistributables and directx

I have no reason to use Linux whatsoever. It literally does nothing I want or need.

the inability or impracticality for multiple versions of a dependency to be installed side by side so programs with different dependencies keep conflicting with each other

only in the sense that linux libraries have a different extension

I want to use linux, the only thing stopping me is this 1 ancient piece of software. I have no idea why the alternatives to photoshop are so shit when something as immensely complex as blender began to outstrip its rivals that are actively still making useful features. I dont even require modern features, I just need something as good as photoshop was like 10 years ago.

WSL

You can literally have multiple distros on different tabs in Windows Terminal. How is that cope? Because no GUI? Name a single Linux only program that isn't a command line tool.

virtual machine

Linux host, Windows VM with GPU passthrough is the best of both worlds.

the G stands for Green

oh ok, thanks Anon

The main problem is lack of driver support from hardware manufacturers. I have run into wonky drivers so often while using Linux that I just can't be bothered anymore. Linux is great for old poorfag PCs, but that is about it.

this

That's a Windows thing, you don't really need to do it on Linux if you use Steam runtimes. Which you probably would be using if you use Steam, Heroic or Lutris. If you use normal wine, it has the C++ runtimes and directx covered, but not the NET crap.

You'll never be able to use Linux if you need that software, though. Adobe is never bringing Photoshop to Linux, but even if they do - they will make it subscription based and I suspect you don't want to pay the subscription. Now, I don't know why the alternatives are "so shit", because I'm not an expert Photoshop user or Krita user, my interaction with that type of software is minimal. I only did anything substantial in Photoshop Lightroom (for my photography), Adobe Illustrator and Premiere. All that has been replaced just fine for me.

the inability or impracticality for multiple versions of a dependency to be installed side by side so programs

it is solved by semantic versions
The biggest issue is that library authors are retarded so they keep breaking things in minor releases and different distros ship different versions of the same lib.
In any case flatpaks do solve this quite well so I am not sure what is the problem here
Windows solution, aka, just ship your own DLLs with the program is even more bloated and retarded

A "It Just Works" linux OS with a magical plugin that makes all windows games (old and new) run flawlessly on my PC without having to jump through hoops that will probably end with "if my 'works on my machine' solutions didn't actually work on your machine, you can always just dual boot bro".
Maybe SteamOS will become that someday, but for now I will just use yet another useless debloat guide to get that healthy dose of "Peace of Mind™" and call it a day.

Linux host, Windows VM with GPU passthrough is the best of both worlds.

probably but also sounds too complicated, never bothered learning if you can even do that on a single GPU or not

You can literally have multiple distros on different tabs in Windows Terminal.

What would even be the use case for that? Plus all of those are just running inside virtual machine anyway.
You can't even run some web server via python or js script there and access it over the local network

Windows solution, aka, just ship your own DLLs with the program is even more bloated and retarded

That is not in fact windows solution. WinSxS is. Not that shipping a few kb of code can be considered "bloat".

Shipping an entire virtual machine because your retarded OS can't handle multiple programs being installed is bloat.

why do you want retards to switch? you should be asking microjew to stop milking the goyim

I'm not going to waste time fixing Windows issues when Microsoft has 200'000 employees and Linux (Bazzite) works perfectly ootb.

Photopea?

When you try to run an obscure Windows application and it screams that "something.dll is not found" and you have to manually download these random dll files from shady websites and place them in the same folder as your obscure app.

It would require all the linuxtroons to stop making their 500th distro and start teamwork on one distro. The ultimate version of linux

for example in modo I used to select through meshes by just clicking and dragging the middle mouse button. in blender you have to switch modes to xray view, drag select then switch back to standard view. There's a workflow in blender that constantly requires switching between object and edit mode and I have no idea why that exists since it was never necessary in the other software I used. Selecting verticies was as simple as left click and drag over the points you need in modo, in blender you select some archaic brush tool that locks the camera so you have you un select the tool, rotate the object, reselect the tool, brush over vertices, then deselect the tool again, repeat every time you need to shift angle. there was a workflow in modo where you just press home and it sets the workplane to that face then you can drag out a box wherever you need it, in blender you have to set up some macro but then you have fuck around with this retarded cursor to dictate where you spawn a box, then go into a menu and select a generic cube that wont be on the surface of the mesh and wont have the dimensions you need.

Its full of examples like this that are subtly annoying and you do them thousands of times so everything begins to feel sluggish. It makes me shittier at modelling because im just too lazy to do shit beyond the basics. There are shitty plugins that alleviate some of these issues but they create issues and inefficiencies of their own. I still use it though because it has a wide feature set, its free and modo died while others are in the process of dying.

from my experience modo was better at hard surface modelling, zbrush is still better for sculpting and blender is still fucking awful for texturing. For animation i have no idea, its probably a toss up between it and maya. blender is pretty nice for rendering though and the veiwpoint is much more advanced so while you model its easier on the eyes.

Shipping an entire virtual machine

flatpaks are not virtual machine, what are you even talking about?
If anything it is Windows that uses WMs as the solution for nearly anything

I've never experienced that before. Well, I did experience it on Windows XP, but that was so long ago that it's kinda pointless to even remember.
On Windows 10 and 11 missing DLLs were never an issue.

it will never get great support because of jewish (((encrypted firmware)))

and now there are 501 distros

fffffffffffffffu

Fedora with KDE probably. You need to install extensions to have basic features on Gnome.

Bottles works fine. It basically behaves as if it's a console emulator. You open it, create a "bottle" (basically a fake Windows directory structure), then you launch .exe files from within that bottle. Every GOG game I've ever downloaded worked just fine. If some don't work, Bottles provides a dependency manager where you can download shit like dotnet framework, vcredist, adobe air, etc.

There's also Lutris, which is similar. The only difference is Lutris has a website where you can download scripts which act as full installers. As in, they automatically set up things for you.
Personally I like Bottles over Lutris because it's more simple, but Lutris is fine for more complex games which require workarounds to work. Like LoL historically did.

On Windows 10 and 11 missing DLLs were never an issue.

because every single piece of software ships with a fuckton of VC++/.NET/windows desktop runtime redistributables

Linux has been great for years now, why do you keep bitching about windows. Just swap already.

Every game to be compatible, that's it.
Most games with anticheat still block or ban for linux.

Valve is dumping their top tier employees into Linux features and functionality and compatibility

And its working, hdr works on steam os, games that dont work on Linux distros work on steamdeck, and when steamdeck 2 is out im buying it

The only valid alternative to photoshop for an artist is clip studio paint and even then it has a fundamental flaw that makes it completely unusable, it isn't multicore so shits itself when you use big brushes, its also not Linux. If CSP fixed their stone age optimisation and ported it to Linux I would finally be free of this adobe curse.

Bazzite and Aurora.
Mint is too outdated. It's basically like using "Linux, but if it's 1-2 years ago". Which is fine for a lot of people, but not really good for gaming because of how fast the drivers and proton move. You'd have to fuck around with 3rd party repos just to get shit working.

The only valid alternative to photoshop for an artist is clip studio paint

Affinity Photo is good

i work and i have a gf. i don't have enough time to install 20 different programs whenever i want to do something

Photopea is a near-1:1 clone of photoshop and runs in the browser so it's distro-agnostic

Fair enough. I'm not an artist, so to me KolourPaint literally covers 100% of my needs.
I just heard from some people I know (even Windows users) that Photopea was good enough for them to move away from paid software including PS.

not true, the current driver supports cards back to the gtx 9xx series i'm fairly certain. my gt 1030 is using the current nvidia driver for linux.

I want SS13 to actually work without issues. I'm not giving up my clownery.

It's funny when linuxtards talk about "bloat" but then use Steam and Lutris. They create prefixes for each game. That is a separate Windows filesystem with the bare minimum needed to run a program. And whenever you need more than bare minimum (often) you winetricks dotnet corefonts or whatever, in every prefix that needs it. Just look at wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gaming#Common_game_dependencies
In Windows you run the all in one installers for the runtimes you need once and your done. In Linux you literally do it for every prefix.
"Bare minimum" Arch is more bloated than Windows 10 IoT LTSC.

a non autistic UI

The use cases for photoshop are split between photo editing/ post processing and painting/drawing. I dont use it for photo editing which most of those replacements specialise in. Photoshop wasn't even made to draw and paint in but is still accidentally the best at it. CSP is the only other piece of software that kind of matches the brush engine and all photoshops key features, since it was made for artists it actually has a few useful ones of its own, its just the performance sucks dick and can only handle drawing, not painting.

Photoshop also benefits from being able to do everything very well so if an artist needs to dip into post processing it's seamless.

pride flag in M$ taskbar

not on my machine

The Linux file system is retarded and one of the main reason that keeps it from becoming popular

still Mint, yeah
this isnt even true, Mint and other Ubuntu-based distros get gpu driver updates either same-day or within a couple days of release

I'll check it out but I highly doubt it'll have all the specific needs I have of the brush engine. photoshop clones always specialise in photo editing which is far easier and less specific.

I am using linux, it's a lot better than windows. fuck windows basically. linux can run basically everything at this point with proton/wine save for a few multiplayer titles or something but who cares about that shit couldn't be me.

the old pirateable versions of photoshop work through wine
GIMP is still better

I love it how as soon as people start talking about Linux, everybody is a fucking youtube content creator, digital drawfag and professional image editor who absolutely NEEDS the 200$ per month adobe subscription programs

If you need to emulate PS2 you need PS2 firmware. Same with Windows compatibility layers.
Plus, it is not that much of a bloat - proton uses just about 900mb per prefix, you rarely need to install additional software there
Also disk space bloat is not the same as runtime bloat that is using your CPU time, RAM and internet connection

I run most of my crap in my default wine prefix and I just symlinked my fonts to the wine prefix. Ez.
I only have a special wineprefix for Aurora 4x at this moment. That game is unplayable unless you use Windows 98 style.

working and working well are two very different things. If you're the type who maxes out 32gb+ of ram on gigantic files is it stable enough to handle that? Does every single feature work correctly?

they are basically the same program so check it out. but honestly if you're more on the digital painting side than the photo editing side then you should check out Krita, also free and open source. it's tailor made for digital painting.

something something pride flag in M$ taskbar

Ah yes the mythical pride flag taskbar that has only one image that is ever posted.
Meanwhile linuxfags using gnome get entire wallpapers.

it runs through the compatibility layer without issues, there won't be random bugs or crashes you wouldn't experience on winblows either
which is also why GIMP is better lol

I've been using it for a while & steam has legendarily fucked up proton & made it ultra irritating to find the windows files for games. It should have just been putting everything in one place. Instead you have to find that games individual windows location. This leads to a huge amount of file explorer bloat & its just shit sometimes to install mods or back up saves. Also sometimes lutris will tell me i dont own my own fucking hard drive so yeah it ain't perfect

sudo apt remove dick

Nobody pays for adobe shit, everyone pirates it. The point is people still need it, its the most commonly used complex professional software suite so its always going to come up.

Less troubleshooting needed. Anti cheat not cockblocking me at every turn.

900mb per prefix

lol, lmao

I dont trust you because you keep saying retarded shit like gimp is better. This tells me your use case for an image editor could be served by an MS paint tier program.

For all my games to run 100% perfect whit minimal extra fiddling for compatibility.

laughing.jpg is a shithead

frogposter is a fucking idiot

2 for 1

wine prefix

uh, isn't it possible to set up one prefix for multiple games? pretty sure you could do that to minimize disk bloat.

Mint and other Ubuntu-based distros get gpu driver updates either same-day or within a couple days of release

Absolutely not true. Mesa is always outdated on Ubuntu LTS and therefore Mint.

it would have to be good and just work

100% of the games and applications I use have to work and be supported directly by the developer including their kernel level anti-cheats. That's never going to happen.

I already tried krita multiple times, on top of crashing randomly it lacks core features and feels like hobby grade software. CSP is professional software but its stuck in its mangaka roots and is struggling to adopt painting.

Of course it is. Some people are just autistic enough to separate games into multiple prefixes.

That's your only criteria? Well then, welcome to Linux I guess.
Start here for now bazzite.gg/#image-picker

Krita and any other KDE app is usually shit on Windows and on LTS Linux distros.

Windows is shit and it's broken in many ways.
Problem is, so is Linux.
Using Linux would just mean having different time-wasting issues. It's just not worth it.

Steam and Lutris make seperate prefixes by default. And you really wouldn't want different games to have the same prefix, when sometimes games don't even work best with the same version of proton.

yep, you can do that pretty easily
You can also just store your wine prefixes on some file system that stores copies of the same file as a single file

maybe because Linux is still synonymous to sacrificing productivity or involves major pipeline changes?
And nobody is paying for these suites, every sane person just pirates them, and the free open source versions aren't up to the task. Retard

maybe because Linux is still synonymous to sacrificing productivity

lol
lmao even

my bad, i thought my comment was universally true but it's only applicable for jewvidia users

involves major pipeline changes

To a very few people, sure. But even then it'll just result in better overall productivity after you get used to the new tools. The OS is just easier to deal with and stays out of your way. "Productivity" on Windows hasn't been a thing since Windows 7.

Linuxfags say games work fine there so, all I need is CSP and Wacom drivers must work out of the box.

but why would you use that? use gimp!! it's the same and bett-

No.

I thought newer nVidia drivers are risky to install on LTS distros? I'm not an nVidia user, but it's just something I've heard people say 5-6 years ago.

better overall productivity after you get used to the new tools

Says the man who has never done anything professional with software in his life. There is no productivity gains from using freeware replacements, its always a permanent debuff. The only people who switch do so because they can stomach the decrease in productivity.

I used PS for art, graphic design and photo editing
GIMP is actually pretty close to PS now with more customizable features if you can program, the only things it's missing are adobe's new AI bullshit
I say GIMP is better because it's as good as you are with computers. you have to read a whole book to actually get good at it, but it's by far the best image manipulation and drawing tool out there currently. it's also optimized so working on 30k images only takes like a few gigs of space, and the source code on resource allocation and memory management alone should be something anyone aspiring to be a real programmer should read

games that dont work on Linux distros work on steamdeck

that's bad faggot. you faggots complain about being forced to use winshit and then applaud the fat kike when he locks you into his os?

there he is again

False

more often than not the retards complaining just bitch about "MUH WORKFLOE I HATE RELEARNING SHIT"
remember, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink

You can write a script to back up saves.
For example since Dolls Nest corrupted my data, I now run a script every time I finish playing that creates a backup of the saves with 7zip named based on the current time/date.
Makes life pretty easy.

youtube.com/watch?v=ur16YaAgte8
Nah, I dont believe you. You sound like an autistic freetard tinkerer who treats photo editing like a programming activity.

Tried Linux a decade ago and it was a painful experience. Might try it again once I get another 2TB SSD or something to put it on.

I hear games have all sort of complications to run so I don't even bother. Maybe if valve started distributing their OS I would switch

I dont understand your point, Is it so inconceivable that people use software in their job? does working in mcdonalds make using PCs for work seem like a fantasy worth bragging about for you?

A "It Just Works" linux OS with a magical plugin that makes all windows games (old and new) run flawlessly on my PC without having to jump through hoops

Windows 10 doesn't even do this.

my game launchers running on it. Not just steam. Also, Onedrive.

probably whenever it becomes impossible to turn off the stuff I don't like or I get advertisements that I can't turn off when I enter desktop or something equally terrible
but I'd want something that's basically identical to windows in terms of being retard proof / streamlined whatever

connect windows 7 computer to internet

Use your work PC for work, retard.
Turns out you don't actually work

I use my employer's PC for work.

In this case you're not leading a horse to water, you're dragging it to a piss-filled ditch and acting surprised when it kicks you in the fucking teeth.

I'm not buying 2 PCs with 2-3000 dollar GPUs in them just so I can be a freetard on the side you retard. When you work with PCs your work computer in is the office. You do experimental and freelance shit at home.

This is true, there's a Windows game I like which runs way easier on Linux than Windows.

I love Krita but it's because I'm broke. It's not really comparable to Photoshop.

Heckin freelancer boipussy in this thread kek

Is piracy impossible with linux or something?

Photoshop isn't piratable

pffthahhahaha why would you want to do/use that?

Naruhodo.

there's plenty of CC releases

which ways?

Sorry, dont understand your gay unemployed discord jokes. In the real world people love freelance work because it pays much better.

noooooooo how dare you want me to learn to use my shit bawwwwwwwwwwww you have to do my work for me reeeeeeeeeeeee

skill issue

I recently switched to linux and did some C# stuff and found the dotnet command line for building & creating projects pretty clean honestly, I hadn't bothered with it on Windows. Prompted me to actually bother to learn a few of the tags in csproj as well so I could add references etc. I guess maybe nuget would be a bit annoying?

Going to install Bazzite or something as dual boot during my vacation and tinker with it and see if I can use it for what I already use daily in windows. If I can, then I'm switching straight away.
No fucking way am I getting W11. Microshart can suck my dick.

That’s not what you’re asking though you disingenuous nigger. You’re not asking people to learn to drive a car, you’re telling them they have to know how to rebuild an engine when all they need is to be able to get to work, and calling them stupid when they point out that’s a useless waste of time.

The elimination of all anti-cheats in multiplayer games. Then I wouldn't have a reason to ever touch Windows again.

I don't know what a tarball is or how to install it and I don't want to learn.

using game launchers

WINE (and most standard things for games like Net Framework, DirectX, Visual Studio) WORKING OUT OF THE FUCKING BOX

I have tried several distros recently and only a very few have Wine preinstalled, but no matter if it was already installed or had to be installed, no game would start. And it doesn't specify why it won't start

I'm not a dev, it's not like a have a choice.

I don't want to learn anything new. I will stick with Windows until Microsoft goes bankrupt.

it would take me not being a techno-retard, and not losing the playability of half my steam library

GIMP is still better

God, I wish. Those shortcuts are an abortion.
Save and export being 2 separate things is also just stupid.

You're supposed to use Bottles or Lutris (or even PlayOnLinux) instead of using Wine directly. They pre-package some necessary dependencies for most games and allow you to install a bunch of other dependencies which some games might need.
Running Wine raw is normally done if you already know how to use and troubleshoot both it and winetricks.
In any case, usually you can just run your game in the terminal and it will spit out an error message there and tell you what's missing.

Confidence that I wouldn't have to deal with possible driver or update headaches. Windows is more reliable in that regard because there's a lot of companies putting money into it.

In terms of software, nearly everything that I might need or want to do is probably accomplishable with Linux alternatives, including gaming.
Photoshop? I might be able to get away with Krita or GIMP instead.

You can just add games to steam and use Valve runtimes. (or use other stuff that gives access to those) Most games run in those.

Setting up stock Wine is more complicated.

half my steam library

you're not playing half your steam library anyway

There's literally an addon for PhotoShop shortcuts in GIMP.

Confidence that I wouldn't have to deal with possible driver or update headaches.

Fedora Atomic distros basically provide this. So, if you're using Kinoite, Silverblue, Bazzite, Aurora, etc. you shouldn't have these issues.

Honestly I hope ReactOS will somehow find a way to succesfully reverse engineer Directx 10 and 11 (and maybe 12)

not everything is on Steam, and I like it that way

I'll give those a try

You fail to see the problem with this suggestion?

Speaking as a faggot that started using Linux/Ubuntu about a year ago what problem? How long did it take you to learn to navigate windows and how unable to adapt are you?

Windows forced me off of its OS with a long attrition battle of taking my computer power to monetize me, introducing more bloat and most aggravating of all is the illusion of choice. If you were to try to remove Windows Defender from 11 you would brick your computer at the root level. Windows' resource consumption and illusion of choice will only grow worse with time if they stay the course, so I got out sooner than later since they seem so hellbent on fucking their users over in order to protect the most braindead.

why not just use CachyOS?

Open kernel 570 drivers and done. MHW when new had gpu driver issues on launch and it was done being fucky by the end of week 1.

Probably October hitting. I’ll enjoy Windows 10 as long as it’s secure but I’m never going to Windows 11.

Time, that's all. I already plan to switch next time I format my PC, if that's whenever Wangblows 10 finally loses support or when something fucks up and needs a reformat or if I get a new PC.

Can it run all my Steam games and shit?

I already have.

I said you can add the game to steam as a non-steam game. Or use any of the other crap that gives access to the steam runtimes. That includes Lutris.

How they made such a shitty software after all the good options Photoshop has is beyond me.

And then it just automatically works on Linux?

That doesn't solve the 50 problems I actually have with proton anon

95% of non steam games can be added to steam as a non steam game and will work perfectly. Just tick the box that says enable proton

by getting rid of what solves dll

Anon, if you got filtered by flatpaks I'm afraid you may be retarded or too stuck in your ways. Enjoy 20 years of copilot and feature creep.

Gaming performance on-par with Windows, that's why I gave up with Linux gaming.

linux is only free if your time has no value

Honestly I hope ReactOS will somehow find a way to succesfully reverse engineer Directx 10 and 11 (and maybe 12)

Maybe in 30-50 years. They're not only underfunded but also walking on eggshells regarding copyright infringement.
Also, there's little incentive for people to care about the project. If you need Windows compatibility without Windows, you can just use Linux+WINE or Android+Winlator (which is basically WINE). If you need Windows compatibility on a PC from 1999-2008, you can just pirate Windows XP and not connect it to internet.

Freetards absolutely blew their chances of getting a usable package management solution with flatpak. They could have simply added downloadable installers, but NO, they absolutely didn't do that. You still have to use app stores to install fucking flatpaks. Guess what, I ain't using any software on my desktop that I can't install simply while fully offline.
Freetards have absolutely broken priorities and zero sense for design.

muh open source

muh freedom

You’re a genuine retard if you don’t understand the difference.

I'd need to be less retarded.

When windows no longer just werk

XP only is just a little TOO little, like I said theres a decent amount of games between 2009 and lets say 2011 that makes it worth to go for a system that does support those games, also I like to be able to browse on the internet thank you

here's a truthnuke i will bless you with
those people who write that shit - they dont use it
if you want a nice GUI for everything you do - prepare for a world of suffering
once you ascend the baby duck syndrome and learn how to use the system correctly without shitware it's a whole lot better but if you want a better windows then stick to windows

Mint is Ubuntu if you want to deal with more bullshit in exchange for marginal bonuses. Mint is under supported, receives slower major updates/compatibility fixes and from being less used is less documented. Anyone who tells you Ubuntu bad is an autistic nigger sacrificing quality of life at every turn for negligible performance and having a package that comes with completely gutted drivers.

I'm mainly talking about business use, not desktop use. ReactOS was for some time advertised as a drop-in replacement businesses and governments could use so that they don't have to move away from their old hardware and software.

This anon is full of shit. Ubuntu? Yeah, it gets updates. Mint? You're up shit creek for a while and their driver updating isn't as streamlined as Ubuntu. Good odds on Mint you won't know tits from ass while Ubuntu is streamlined.

muh <3% performance

muh troubleshooting constantly for it

Shut the fuck up.

you do realize there's a fully functional open source free software d9-12 implementation called dxvk dumbass?

I'm 100% convinced that anyone shilling for Ubuntu to be used on desktop deliberately wants people to try Linux and hate it.

Mint is directly based on Ubuntu and uses the official Ubuntu repos. Stop being retarded.

Make it braindead easy to use

Full software support, including from Nvidia. AMD betrayed the Linux community with the RX 9000 series drivers, unfortunately.

Does ReactOS support it? Is ReactOS a usable desktop OS? No? Then fuck off.

AMD betrayed the Linux community with the RX 9000 series drivers

What happened? I'm not a consoomer so I don't have one of these.

you dont even know that WINE and react share code

This attitude is why your os is STILL at 5% marketshare after 30 years of development lmao

What does this have to do with ReactOS being completely unusable in the next 30 years?

It's like rebuilding an engine

It's more like the driver's wheel moving to the opposite side you're used to and because you're so used to such minor details when it's the same machine you cannot bring yourself past ineptitude despite everything being the same if not improved.

improved? Bullshi-

I update all my drivers with one command and it's one of the few times I open the command line and I can do whatever I want in terms of file structure with free impunity right clicking and making new folders.

I've been using mint mate for 10 years. Force of habit. I like it this way.

I got friends that I want to play games with and every time they want to try new game I don't want to check if it works in linux and look for some shitty workaround. For example once they wanted to play modded lethal company and I had to download 25 mod one by one because the mod launcher didn't work in linux

For it to work with most programs out the box. Having to hope for a Linux version is horrible.

Most of the time, I had to change proton version in the settings for one game though.

Native .exe compatibility i.e. no performance drops when running a .exe on Linux, ever.

microsoft releases linuxindows

has ads

You don't get that in Windows either though. Running an exe on Windows results in performance dropping because now you're using more computer resources.

Mint is for someone that is familiar with Linux and wants to avoid Ubuntu's "bloat", which is a lot of plug-and-play out of the box and requires you frequently open terminal up to bug squish or learn a new concept. I'd suggest it to someone that wants to learn Linux/the baby steps but not someone who just wants to abandon Winshit ASAP and get back to casual use. I say this as someone who started with mint before getting tired of it and being asked by a Master's in Math 'why are you using Mint when you're new to Linux and have no compsci knowledge/fundamentals?'

You're asking for something that's not even possible on Windows.

Lmao that statement is just omega coping. Every game DOES work even most old games work. The few exceptions due to hardware specific bugs or some compatibility modes having to be started hardly count.

Someone asking that they want to be able to migrate their existing software library over with little to no effort is absolutely a reasonable demand to make. And every saying of that of it being unreasonable is EXACTLY why Linux remains niche. If you ignore the needs of a prospective user, the person won't use your shit. It's that fucking simple.

If it actually worked on install rather than just introducing a revolving door of troubleshooting issues.
Sound is fucked? Solution is to disable CPU features for some fucking reason. Oh, you disabled CPU features? That worked, but now you've created a branching set of new hardware AND software issues. The point where I finally had a fully functional machine was when I reinstalled Windows.

Is this also like ReactOS (as in reverse engineerd)? Because I find it hard to believe Microsoft would allow such a thing to exist

Now watch multiple games not work because not everything simply works on a translation layer. You are fucked when it comes to most online games for instance as it will fire off cheat detection software.

There is literally no excuse for not making single file offline installers a thing, they just wanted to tie everyone to app stores because freetards for some reason have a fetish for them.
The "billion visual studio dlls" literally just works and solve the issue freetards have NEVER been able to solve properly because the >muh GANOO system they worship so much doesn't allow it, lmao. Both the license and the architecture cuck them out of being able to have multiple standard library versions on the same system. Dependency issues on Windows are non-existent in 2k25.

based on reactos and wine yes, however since it has foundation of real windows NT, compatibility seems much greater

Many years ago i didnt bother becuase it didnt support a lot of games i used to play on regular basis but now i actually might consider it.

Is there a difference between shorthorn and longhorn or just cosmetic differences?

This attitude is making you much older than you realize. You have to learn new thing all your life if yu dont wanna become washed up mess.

What are .so files, alex?

longhorn is codename for vista
shorthorn is backport of modern compatibility to XP

I'm literally 40 and I spend most of my time learning new shit. What the hell do they put in water these days to make people die so early?

washed up mess

you're gonna be that anyways, you're the one that isn't content with it and is chasing basically nothing

Ubuntu

I think you're comparing the latest version of Ubuntu, not the LTS. The LTS is the primarily advertised version and the one most people get baited into installing.

Mint

get issue

have to dig through multi-years old posts to try to extrapolate and tinker with it yourself

Since it's literally based on the latest Ubuntu LTS, you can just search "??? issue Ubuntu" and find the solution.

And Ubuntu is for someone familiar with Linux who knows to avoid the LTS version outside of servers.
Even then it's ass because it's upgrade system often bricks people's systems because it's not really meant to be upgraded from one release to the next. Most Ubuntu users are businesses which re-deploy clean installs of Ubuntu. So, nobody seemingly cares about testing the upgrades.
It's just not a good desktop OS.

The first time you're installing something you'd download it anyways. And from there you can literally just create a backup of your application in a single archive and then unpack it on any other machine. It's literally the same effect as an offline installer.

Is it possible to get the later with the GUI/theme of the first? I really like the way Longhorn looks

plex-xp.png - 1024x768, 401.14K

What would it require for you to switch from Windows to a Linux based operating system?

Probably some compatibility with multiplayer games that used to work before the addition of kernel level anticheat which made them unplayable, like the battlefield games.

I literally wanted to download a flatpak program for archival purposes for another architecture. It is impossible. Sasuga freetards.

What would it require for you to switch from Windows to a Linux based operating system?

I already have. mostly because I hate Microsoft and their products.

I use cachyOS and xfce, instead of photoshop i use Krita.

GIMP (which is lightyears better that PS)

Krita

I already have
I understand why some people haven't swapped yet, but there is nothing Windows offers me personally aside from headaches I avoid with linux.

Most people won't just take their device and switch an OS. It's a very niche thing to do. Most people just use Windows because it's the default OS on 99% of good value devices.

Save, Save As, and Export should always be separate options. Especially for a raster graphics editor where exporting can be a destructive process (jpeg or tga compression, gif dithering and overlay/replace frames, etc).

Microsoft pushes this daily with adding absolute garbage to the default windows

Moved to Fedora a couple years ago once Wayland became good enough for me. I honestly dread using Windows. It's just so frustratingly shit.

directory opus, affinity suite, eagle.cool, and csp ports
Would do it in a second if they were all ported

It's too late, i'm already using it.
And even if i go back to Windows, it will be only on the primary computer.

I mean I understand there's a learning curve and for most of the population, learning the nuances to MAC OS/Windows/Linux to make an informed decision isn't worth it versus just sticking to whatever you were introduced to as a child.
As someone into programming, making the swap to Linux was an easy move. Making a good Windows dev environment for 90% of languages is ass. Automating tasks in Windows is ass. I don't play overwatch tier slop and I don't use photo editing software.

I get that we all like arguing on the internet and stuff, but if you're out to convince people that Linux is good, there's no point in engaging with people who answer OP's question with anything like

I'll switch when ALL games have PERFECT compatibility

because it's just a roundabout way of saying that they have no interest in ever using Linux. It doesn't matter if they don't have that level of compatibility even on Windows. They think they do. Moreover, it's likely that they do play at least one game that wouldn't work as well on Linux, so if they don't hate Windows enough to use Linux in spite of that game, they're right to stay on Windows.
The only people whose minds might be changed in threads like this are ones who truly want to get the fuck off of Windows but genuinely believe severely outdated notions of what it's like to use Linux, e.g. they unironically think that you need to do everything on a command line. Go ahead and inform them that it's not 1999 anymore. But pretty much everyone else is still on Windows because they have no reason to switch to Linux and wouldn't enjoy using Linux.

To hear that it's actually good for gaming and doesn't require a ton of work arounds. I already use linux a ton for work but don't use it on my home PC becuase it's objectively inferior to Windows 11 for media consumption and gaming.

he pays for a file manager

As someone into programming, making the swap to Linux was an easy move

That's not what made it easy for you. What made it easy is that you only use the bare minimum of programs.
Linux is good for most kinds of programming, but Windows really isn't that bad. With WSL, you can have the best of both worlds. That's what I use at work.

near-1:1

As a graphic designer who'd love to save some money, booted photopea up and tried to do several things, was severely disappointed.

hotkeys from photoshop and hotkeys in general

These are important, it's photoshop's actual moat - they're completely nuked for basics (eg transforms, brush resizing), they apparently remapped absolute retard basics like free transform to ALT-control-T like psychopaths, and all the existing keybinds they do support are hard-coded so you can't unfuck them if you disagree with what they picked. This would nuke my productivity.

No layering references

Photopea doesn't support popping out multiple images over or around your image, so it's useless for art that needs references

no layer masks and their raster masks are FUCKED

Their raster mask doesn't respect the masking layer when EG magic wanding so you're actually selecting from the original layer when this is VERY incorrect

tried to click and drag windows like layers, the color picker etc.

Doesn't work. Having to go back and forth is miserable, it's important you can move them for some tasks.

expand and contract on selection is busted

It immediately performs the expansion if you've done a previous expand, and "ok" just dismisses the modal. if you do any other action in the undo chain, then cancel the expansion, it does the select transform but DELETES YOUR NEW ACTION because X just triggers an undo action. The dev is a retard.

Deleted a patch and tried content aware fill

Tried to find generative fill and other AI features which came out since 2021ish

Literally unsupported lmao

Export is missing file size management features

This sucks because inability to resize gifs means I can't turn a 30mb gif into a 2mb Anon Babble compatible one

This isn't a photoshop substitute and someone who thinks this is a near clone either is using 0-1% of photoshop, or doesn't understand you can't beat photoshop by just imitating having its menu options, the DETAILS matter.

There's no reason for save as and export to be separate functions given the core difference is just the file types.
Just literally let "exporting" automatically switch to "saving" when selecting certain file types.

I don't even really understand why you're still arguing with me or where the disagreement is.
You're just affirming my main point that windows offers me nothing personally.

Play video game natively and support modding tools

nexus is apparently working on a native Linux app

nothing
udna and zen6 with its bigger chiplets will be a juicy bellwether for switching to linux

The learning curve doesn't matter to most of the population. Having to install an OS manually is a huge barrier to entry alone.

Windows is fucking awful for development unless you're doing video game development exactly.

you only use the bare minimum of programs.

I think you'll find that 90% of the population uses the bare minimum.

playing natively

Overrated. There's nothing wrong with using Bottles/Lutris.
A lot of good games are console exclusives so you'd use emulation anyways. At least Wine is actually native.

modding tools

Most modding tools will work fine under Bottles/Lutris/Wine. So, if you just install your Windows game in something like Bottles and then install the modding tool in the same bottle, it should just work. It worked for me for all the games I play, but obviously I'm not playing 100% of games so I can't guarantee anything.

This "Anon Babble" person sounds like they have a personality disorder. Or maybe it's just a group of many people with different opinions.

NTA but he's right, you want separate options for this. "save as", as an idiom, is meant to drop a file and be done. If "save as" starts fussing, you're probably pissed off, and reasonably so.

"Export" has permission to be more heavyweight by getting away from that, and is useful for letting a user kick off workflows for EG image rescaling, image up-or-down-samplers, managing file size, altering color spaces, and so on. It's not just "save", it's "save the file, with the following parameters".

If you don't know why you need it, YOU probably don't need it, but that doesn't mean the option isn't useful for the people who understand why it's there.

I already have
IVe been on linux for about 3 years now(yeah im a newfag)
switched after i had rough period with my laptop where it would occasionally need to be restored to factory settings.
I still have other PCs with W10LTSC though since I havent gotten CAD running on my main PC.
Other than that I am satisfied with linux and do not have plans getting back to windows as DD

The learning curve doesn't matter to most of the population. Having to install an OS manually is a huge barrier to entry alone.

If you have to learn how to install the OS, doesn't that fall under learning curve?

That was my first post. I'm not going to say "NTA" like some reddit faggot.
If you're ok with only having access to some versions of a small selection of programs, good for you, but that doesn't make Linux a viable desktop OS for most peopel.

Windows is fucking awful for development unless you're doing video game development exactly

As I said, Linux is a Windows app.

I think you'll find that 90% of the population uses the bare minimum.

That is right, and a lot of them already use Linux. Except it's not ganoo plus Linux.

Not having to choose between the millions versions of Proton
I just wanna check pcgamingwiki, click play and just play
I don't wanna click play, play a little, bug, exit, check another proton version, repeat
And good Nvidia drivers

"I understand why its a hassle for people, but personally its better for me"

"No you fucking retard don't you understand, its not worth it for most people!"

I genuinely don't understand why you're so mad.

It does, sure, but the problem is that most people don't want to do it in the first place. Not because it's difficult and they have to learn it, but because it's inconvenient. So it's not a matter of learning. It's a matter of will.
The only way for most people to start using Linux is to have some company make affordable Linux devices like Valve did with the Steam Deck. And if this ever starts happening, Microsoft would definitely try to compete against it (fairly or unfairly) so that Windows can stay relevant.

Linux is a Windows app.

That's great. Windows is a Linux app too.

I'm not even using Linux for a full year yet and I already have more mastery over it than I ever had over windows in the 20 years I used it. Already have written 30-40 scripts just for my personal quality of life. On windows for every little shit you have to download some fat bloated software with gui. In Linux I can do the same in a few lines.

Literally just learning about the existence of another unix program already expands your options and mastery over the OS massively. I genuinely pity any cuck that spends a majority of his life in front of a screen and uses anything but Linux.

Nordic supremacy.

If it weren't for games, I already would have went to Linux or something else

Proton Experimental all day every day.

Lossless Scaling Frame Generation

All of my 3d shit to work without additional troubleshooting.
I'd swap in a heartbeat and NEVER look back.

created by a Finland Swede

Sweden doesn't use it

???

retarded frog

It needs to not suck and not be about filtering newbs that can't codelol

Every time I tried it, it was because people said "that was five years ago, it's come a long way now" or "Android is linux, and you use that"

I use it, it sucks at least as bad as the last time, (breaks so easily... so easily) Android works out of the box and IS NOT A DAILY DRIVER OS. Yes, I have android, I use my phone less than 10 minutes a day.

My Windows 7 system, OS perfection.

I still don't get why people shill Linux to casual retards. I'm a programmer so Linux by default is thousands of times better than anything else. But for the average run of the mill homosexual I just don't see the point.

A tip to bew users: TLDR is the fastest way to learn any new program. The pages are so simple.

If I couldn't tell the difference between Windows and Linux.

Last 4 games I've played have been on Linux Mint on 16 years old laptop

The swedish kalifate is a bit of an outlier among the nordic countries.

I don't understand what people's problem is with Krita, I find it perfectly fine.

Steam OS , is not fully released yet. My next build will be dual boot with steam os and windows.

None of that matters if you are working with PS at a professional capacity anon. No client is gonna deal with your incompatibility issues.

No

It's better than Windows. Some people just want to stop people's suffering.

This. It's good to the point it's used professionally in some places.

I NEED VALVE

Why not just use Bazzite? SteamOS will never be "released" for an average desktop, while Bazzite is literally SteamOS but better.

I second this. Another great thing is the fzf-tab extension for zsh, which gives you a searchable list of flags for a lot of programs. It doesn't work with all programs, but it's still very useful.

Bazzite is literally SteamOS but better.

is it? Im not trolling but genuinely asking.

100% software compatibility parity with the current latest version of windows.

but you don't NEED to play games with kernel-level anti-cheat

but you don't NEED to play new mages games the year they come out

yes i do. fix it.

Masha'allah, I will give you a taste of my shoe, or my name isn't Lundkvist

someone needs to tell the antartic peoples that linux is better than wangblows

I use SteamOS more than I do windows already.

Also Android.

Switch?
I've been using linux since 2008
Why?
Because I'm fkn adorable :3

It works somewhat different than photoshop which turns a lot of people immediately off. When I started using it krita felt like the devs when out of their way to do some things explicitly different from photoshop for no real reason. Though now I'm using to it and find it also perfectly capable. But most people are retarded and you have to take that into consideration.

show bussy

Ivy needs rough sex from me, a human male

MS Excel and Tableu.

Basically, yes.
It's a distro which comes with all the gaming related patches from SteamOS and Nobara (another Linux distro). It's ootb setup is probably better than any OS out there. And it's an actual desktop OS (unless you pick the "handheld" installer which boots you into big picture mode like SteamOS)
Also, unlike SteamOS it's not actually "immutable" - meaning you can install software system-wide. Which you'll need if you're fucking around with ZeroTier/Tailscale/Hamachi, virtual machines, etc.

had that crappy wine 6.0 on Linux Mint for years

never got it to work, always some weird errors

decide to try to fix that shit again

read about this wine 8.0 before

these stupid commands must work this time

paste some codes from tutorial on internet

huh.. everything goes smoothly this time

wine --version

wine 10.0

BI tools are the spawn of evil

interdasting, im learning new stuff about linux every day, when that knowledge accumulates enough I wlll pull the trigger on switching from winblows

make a virtual machine with an old version of windows and start recording for youtube

go out of your way to install the release version with no security updates

go out of your way to completely disable the firewall and anti-virus

get hacked by jeets using long fixed exploits that don't work in any other circumstances

oh my fauci if only my computer was vaccinated! i better go to best buy and get windows 11 home edition right away! please hit the like and subscribe button and ring the bell for notifications

When I switched over to Linux I had like 4-5 programs that had no real alternative. But trough learning how Linux works I changed my workflows and created own solutions and now Linux is irreplaceable. Feels really good to know that no one can take Linux away and I can spend the rest of my life in this environment.

Feels really good to know that no one can take Linux away

Linux breaks compatibility with itself all the fucking time. I am unironically more relaxed knowing that the 10 year old windows programs I use on a daily basis will keep working without any updoots.

I have old 3DS max 2010 32bit because reasons and it's so broken on Windows 10.

I know, learning them feels like a war crime, but they pay the bills so whatever..

Steam OS is literally in the process of being released and then it will probably become one of the main distros or the main distro. I see the writing on the wall anon, Valve wants to get away from Windows because MS could shut them off at any moment. The future might just be linux and the future of linux might just be Steam OS. So yes anon i do >need Valve

I used Linux for about a year so I know what I'm talking about.

- Every game to work
- My three monitor setup with different resolutions and refresh rates to work
- Look pretty with minimal tinkering
- Actually make it easy to pick one fucking distro that will just work well

All of this would make Linux perfect

fix it

Actual compatibility is something that only the developers of that software can fix for you. Linux geeks aren't going to give you a Linux version of PhotoShop because legally and practically they can't, and Wine is never going to be a perfect clone of Windows.
Honestly I think the worst thing about Wine is that it has made everyone think that an operating system's developers are responsible for having software work on that operating system. Wine is a hack, and it works so well for games just because they only need to shit pixels onto the screen and occasionally write a file. For other software, Wine is not a substitute for native support at all and never will be, and no one who works on Linux can force the developers of proprietary software to release Linux builds.

We'll see. But as it currently stands, their OS is very limited (especially in terms of hardware support) and only suited for consoles.

why does Linux only ever improve when bullied by corpos

Yeah, it's sadly not perfect. it's pretty damn great all things considered though. Much better than anything on any other OS.

Ease of use im not running code to do anything on windows

you could try dual booting. basically you'd install two separate boot partitions, one with linux and the other with windows, on a single hard drive (not recommended), or if you got two hard drives, put windows on one and linux on the other (better option), so that you could have both windows and linux on the same machine.

give linux a spin. if you hate it, go back to windows. simple.

The reason im confident is because MS plans directly go agaisnt Valve plans. Valve cannot just sit by and do nothing because that road leads to the scenario where they get slowly locked out of their own market because MS is not stupid they are not just gonna cede to Valve as large a section of the computing space as videogames are. Valve probably treats Steam OS as not a real OS yet because they dont want people coming to them with support problems while they are still in their launch plans.

That I could use the same mods I have on Windows, no exceptions.

run-on sentence

computer illiteracy

Because making an OS is a shiton of work and only big corpos have the resources to do it.

Are nords the chinese people of white people? And if so who are the black people of white people?

unironically a skill issue
take 5 minutes to get used to the UI paradigm before complaining

Nothing, I use it for everything.

Linux breaks compatibility with itself all the fucking time

Like?

MS is not stupid they are not just gonna cede to Valve

I mean, MS has 1000x more resources, employees and partners. Valve doesn't stand a chance.

MS could shut them off at any moment.

That's the thing about win32 that makes it actually free compared to all other OS.
They literally can't do this.

A new computer. My gaming computer is also my work computer and it's too much work to switch at the moment. I will install Manjaro linux to the new one I'll buy at some point and will switch to that one progressively.

Anyone that professionally uses Adobe products cannot replace them anon, even if they want to and know how to. You NEED Adobe because that is the standard in the industry. No client is gonna put up with weird compatibility issues, they just fire you and never hire you again.

Wine actually working with all the Windows-exclusive software I need, like a container or emulator. Sonic mods integrated with Steam releases of certain games are what convinced me I would not be leaving Windows any time soon.

The difference between us is I have knowledge of different paradigms, particularly the ones blender is stealing from while you were born in the freeware ghetto. I remember a time before 1,2,3 were mapped to vert, edge, face and blender tards were coping about it while modo just worked. Its like this but with every feature.

What is MS going to do though? EU is going to bum fuck MS if they try any unfair practices.

No. NO. I am not having this. Fix your screencap’s fucking resolution, call your neofetch again, THEN post it.

First it would have to stop being Linux Cringe, then I might switch over

cope, 4k is supreme

I switched and it's going fine for now, but I don't play many videogames.
Krita is a good replacement for Photoshop so far.

The problem with Linux is that there are too many variants. Countless distros, doing the same things in countless different ways. It's like Linux has succumbed to a divide an conquer strategy that was self-inflicted.
To become a viable desktop system for the average user, that raging chaos must coalesce into a couple of offerings that work well and have great support and documentation.

Why do autists love desktop icons so much?

i just use the start menu to launch things

I highly advise you to avoid Manjaro considering it's unstable as fuck.

they actually use their computer and don't just rice it

Anon the EU is just not capable of changing their entire computing infrastructure overnight

The problem with Linux is that there are too many variants

Literally only Ubuntu, Arch and Fedora. Their variants are just flavor.

The shit you posted is not in 4K. I have a 4K ultrawide.

bob

he doesn't have some ebic hacker name

like blackHat

or byteGhost

etc

Desktop icons are ricing. Non autists just use text with autocomplete.

no icons are clutter
ricers are obsessed with clean desktops

Onedrive

This was one of the things that I was unsure of when I switched, too. But there are other cloud softwares that work the same if not better than onedrive, and if you're paying for it you can get something better too. I started using MEGA and I can make multiple folders sync / pick and choose what I want to sync between my laptop and desktop. It's only $5 for 400gb and $10 for 2tb per month, so already a better deal than M$

Icons are not clutter if you put them in folder like and have that folder on your desktop

I can't switch because of a cloud service.

Holy fucking autism. How are people not ashamed writing shit like this?

rclone sync ~/folder/backup cloud:backup --progress

With this one command you can use like 50 cloud services.

I still miss Mesh
onedrive is such a gargantuan downgrade it's difficult to express in words
NOTHING comes close to what Mesh did, it really felt like the future of what cloud computing should have been, but that we weren't allowed to have because of enshittification

It often takes years, decades or forever to discover that a company is doing something malicious. And in this case, destroying a competitor is well worth even a billion dollar fine.

He's talking about EU fining MS, I assume.

It's a small thing. I use RDP to connect to my home PC from work so I can post on 4chins without tripping webfilters on the corporate firewall. It's really nice because I also use RDP to connect to servers as part of my job so it's super easy to hide between work windows. If I were to switch to GNU/Linux I'd have to use something different like maybe parsec but most of those programs connect over port 443 which I want to avoid because of the filters. So Windows lets me slack off better.

I love my 'eck though so if it was just for games I'd switch instantly.

gamer dog.jpg - 660x631, 45.79K

people still acting like linux is some esoteric operating system

jeets use it by the hundreds of millions ffs

Goypass

its not esoteric
it's just shit

There's just no reason for me to switch so I don't give a damn.

It often takes years, decades or forever to discover that a company is doing something malicious

Just be concrete in what they are doing. I don't know if you have noticed but Microsoft has made a billion poor decisions in the video game sector over the last decade. I think we need to stop putting megacorps on a pedestal. Under the hood there are also only thousands of Indianans working and not black magic.

Then why Linux adoption is so low, even despite being free?
The reality is that all these "flavors" in the eyes of a user who doesn't want to waste time nerding on his OS, communicate confusion and unreliability.

meat for

Yeah that seems about right. That is indeed close to the current version of wine.

winever.png - 192x105, 3.9K

i chose bob cuz it's the funniest name

It's called the price of freedom. The nature of it being free also means everyone can do whatever the fuck they want with it. It's not a bad thing for you individually. Quite the contrary.

not staging

New PC

Then why Linux adoption is so low, even despite being free?

Because Microsoft has lobbied their way into all the markets and products. Linux doesn't come pre-installed on your mom's laptop. And why would she waste time installing a new OS when Windows is acceptable enough for her?

Staging runs like crap. Or it did last I used it.

xrdp allows you to remote into a linux desktop using the standard windows RDP client on port 3389. Bit wonky, but it works. Even has remote audio and clipboard transfer.

Why is low userbase always an argument against Linux when it's pretty obvious that the cream of the crop of PC users use Linux while only the biggest retards use windows? It's not even speculation, that's just how it is.

inb4 nerds, indians, weebs

So? Windows still has far more of those but the best of them use Linux.

Mint has Wine 9.0 now.
Not that it matters when 99% of Linux gamers are running shit through Bottles, Lutris, Steam, etc. instead of using the system's Wine package.

multiple games with certain types of anticheat, off the top of my head I know that GTA Online, Apex Legends, and Dragonball Fighterz aren't working correctly

Biggest headache I've had with Linux gaming in the last year or so has been big AAA releases, Space Marine 2 and Expedition 33 both had an update in the first month that completely borked the game on Linux. Space Marine would crash if you tried to get into the steam overlay to join multiplayer lobbies and Expedition started crashing every time I hit a cutscene.

instead of using the system's Wine package

Which is a shame because system wine works fine for 95% of games and with a simple alias you will launch games so fucking comfortably with zero overhead.

Linux users also have the most disposable income for games, according to HumbleBundle back in 2019 or so.
On average, Linux users are willing to spend 20% more money than Windows users.

money-per-os.png - 740x649, 71.09K

Significantly higher number of games with native linux versions, proton works great most of the time but frequently I find that the one game I want to play hard crashes on Linux regardless of what version of Proton I'm running.

An end to multiplayer game devs manually preventing their anticheat services from running on Linux

The biggest advantage Windows still has over Linux in the context of gaming is that with Windows you only need one operating system, and if you are only going to run one operating system you are shooting yourself in the foot for it to be Linux or especially Macos. I could go to the trouble of running multiple operating systems on one machine, but if all my games run on my Windows drive and only most of them run on Linux I'm just going to boot into Windows every time to save myself the hassle. I would prefer to be on Linux but not by enough to inconvenience myself.

As a Windows user, this sounds accurate. I am not willing to spend any amount of money on games

Low userbase and tons of variants is actually great. No one even bothers to write viruses for Linux because it's considerably more effort for far less return.

unrealistic and vague requirement that not even Windows meets

I wanted to call you out, but I had some games fail on me on day one, and the Dark Messiah bullshit I had to go through, so I'll give you that.
God bless GOG

I wanted to call you out

That's because you are in a linux thread. Rest of the internet never can shut the fuck up how shit windows runs for everything. But in a linux thread? Suddenly it runs absolutely perfect.

No one even bothers to write viruses for Linux

Who's going to tell him

Oh look, how cute. The russian/chinese script kiddy is seething that someone is running the impenetrable chad OS.

Based. Same here. I pirate Windows versions of games then run them in Bottles on Linux.

pirate.jpg - 492x385, 32.86K

Thanks to the guy who posted Shorthorn, will definably check it out

It would need to work as effortlessly as Windows and have all of Windows' features with complete support for everything Windows has, and I'd have to be building a new computer because uninstalling Windows is a bridge too far when I barely got it up here to begin with.

Windows

effortless

Last time this was true was during Windows XP and maybe Windows 7 era.

This why nobody likes you faggots. Yes. Effortless. I turn the pc on, i click the button, it does the thing. I don't need to go looking around for bug fixes om forums or typing in command lines to do basic shit. I don't have to worry about compatibility or a million different versions that for some reason can't do basic shit without you having to become a Tech Priest. When Linux is as braindead as Windows, call me.

I'm calling the faggot paradise right now, nigger. Pick up, I know you are there.
