GPD and Ayaneo make slider handhelds like the PSP Go, they're more expensive than the Steam Deck OLED, don't have OLED and have comparable performance to the Asus ROG Ally X.

The ugly truth is that silicon has hard limits on how many transistors one can cram into a square millimeter and how much power they have to consume. Nvidia's GPUs have been turning into increasingly worse and worse housefires over the last few gens for this reason, they keep upping the power consumption because it's the only way to reliably increase performance. Handheld chips cannot do that while keeping thermals and bettery life in check. Technology has genuinely stagnated.

The problem is there's no incentive for Nvidia to sell you better hardware, and both Intel and AMD sell you worse and cheaper hardware.

It's not that big of a problem now, but that's because the stagnations hasn't been going on for long enough. Many people are still running outdated and inefficient PCs and game optimization accounts for that. Give it a few more years, this year's mid-range hardware will become the baseline for PC game optimization and PC handhelds will be truly unable to keep up. Dedicated handheld platforms make more sense in the end because they force devs to optimize.

Handheld upgrades are basically useless until they get RDNA4 chips with FSR4 upscaling, that will really improve performance.

Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 goes up to 45W and its default TDP is 28W. Z1 Extreme goes up to 30W and its default TDP is 15W. My point still stands. The only way they can solve this issue is by making the cooling system more robust and using a bigger battery, but that's going to significantly increase either weight or price.

I honestly believe they can get the 2027 handheld down to either $450 or $500. This is due to it being a Series S successor. They can do that with custom AMD Zen 5, RDNA 3+, 2 TFLOPS, 12 GB of RAM, and 512GB of SSD. Just go for a native 1080p target with a 7 inch LCD screen. They don't need to go all out and would get the Series S performance and power in a handheld at an affordable price. Home console though, that thing is going to be over $1,000 tops.

the handheld tech for tiny devices that run PS4 and higher games simply isnt there yet.
if you do want something smaller you will have to live with worse performance and a more limited libary.
the current top line retroids play PS2/Wii/some Switch games and they are about as big as a 3DS.

I think Microsoft will be fine now due to Xbox becoming Windows which will fix a lot of problems because it means one dev kit and just choosing between specs with both the handheld and home console having locked specs. This mainly becomes a problem for Sony who won't have parity with the PS6 and will use the same architecture so it will have a very high price, the PA handheld I mean.
