I tried to install it recently but idk if its my framerate too high or modern system running fast but I just could not fucking control my guy and enemies animated too fast. I played the shit out of this game when I was like 12, prob never beat it but got pretty far in as the dwarf and the knight.
True, Blade of Darkness doesn't have enemies that telegraph their attacks weeks ahead of time, rolls with iframes, and press X to ebin backstab buttons. It's just a fighting game.
From Software would need to learn how to implement a hitbox correctly before we get too hasty by calling what they do 'good'. Unfortunately this was one of the ideas that they could not successfully steal due to incompetence.

it took me a little while to get into it. i tried it once not too long after it came out and it kept crashing and just felt janky to play. tried it again years later when i saw it on myabandonware and loved it, i've played it like at least a dozen times. once you get used to it feeling a little janky to control it's really a lot of fun.
the level design is really great with a good amount of variety in things, decent short cutscenes that don't try to feel like a movie, a lot of good secrets to find.

More like a drop in standards. I'm not one of those people biased to second game by the way, they're all shit. Every single one of them.
It's actually pretty good at the start when your HP isn't too high (so food actually fucking matters as spare source of healing and not a waste of time because 500HP Potion is already just a drop in your HP pool so forget about food) and enemy HP isn't bloated (so you don't just wait for your stamina to restore so you can spam your best weapon tech until enemy dies). It's the second half of the game where nothing new gets added into combat (same potions, same enemy types but with higher stats, puzzles and platforming is about the same for entire playthrough outside of Temple of Ianna and that one locations with sun key) so you get bored and just wanna be done with the game.
It was nice that some enemies had resistance to slashing weapons (so you had to use blunt weapons against skeletons and golems) but it's too bad that these two are the only resistance types in the game (not to mention that after getting high tier weapons you just ignore the resistance and spam 5-10k damage weapon techs) - would be nice to actually benefit from fire, ice and poison weapons (poison is utter garbage beyond first few levels).
Bow being trash AND permanently wasting one of your weapon slots because you can't drop it and absolutely need it to solve puzzles is bullshit, 3 slots for actual weapons is not enough when you have so many slashing, blunt and unique weapons in the game.
Amazon was easy mode, Knight was clearly the most well-thought character in terms of gameplay, Barbarian was hard mode and Dwarf was just a manlet Knight.
Overall it was okay for one playthrough but I kinda forced myself to finish later playthroughs because there wasn't that much variety in gameplay (basically it's not Action RPG, it's just Action, like Rune).
