The catch is that it's a free version of a high-commitment game. Friends, raiding, community in general, the turnover rate is so god damn high that many guilds struggle to compete past Naxx even with scaling down to 30-man because people just come and go. Gear gets sent off to the void and regearing in MC isn't what any raid group wants to do again.

The catch USED to be that it was infested with Russians and Chinkman, but that has been solved for a while now.

I understand, but raids scaling down to some extent makes them a LOT less hardcore, and thats a good thing. No having to compete for a raid spot or if someone has to drop middle of raid, it's not a chore to replace them. It's also still not entirely the best strategy either, because 4-Horseman with less than ideal Healers and Tanks is pretty rough to achieve with only 30 people.

Mobile bank and AH are usuable by both factions, and you don't even need to use your own. You can freely call out "I need a bank" in a raid and someone will drop it for you.

The biggest catch is the 1.12 client. A lot of people don't realize how basic the vanilla client was. There are some tweaks you can make to improve it, but you're still going to be missing a lot of TBC-and-onward conveniences.

There are some RP communities on TurtleWoW, though they tend to be pretty small.

Most people I've encountered on TWoW aren't as sweaty as retail or classic players, outside of raids at least. It can actually be a little frustrating at times in dungeons if you were hoping for a more competent group. But I've been in groups that were more than willing to take alternate routes and explore. I know I ended up going to the basement of Sunken Temple for the first time in about 20 years just because some people I was doing the dungeon with had some quests down there.

I did the custom dungeons except the bronze dragon one since it was closed for being WAY to buggy. They are alright but it certainly has that patented "you can tell this is a mod" feel to them. They are harder than the normal ones but also fairly short. The one grove dungeon in the 30s is fucked up since its bassicly a huge open area. Hope the tank knows the boss route or your gonna be in there a long time. The vault 60 dungeon was extreamly fun since I did it with a friend and it took a long time with difficult bosses. The tank made the call for the final boss that only and my friend would fight it. The other 2 retard DPS were more trouble then they were worth so that was fun having the three of us fight the final boss of the dungeon. We won. Chinese undead rogue stole the final boss drop because the devs put it in a chest for some reason cucking the final dps warlock out of a preraid BIS.

Some of the older custom stuff is pretty bleh, but it feels like they're getting better at it.

Karazhan Crypts is a slog with lots of annoying mechanics, and the gear is weirdly itemized based on some stupid ideas they had early on (like database.turtle-wow.org/?item=60794 back when they thought about giving Priests some melee abilities).

People generally like a lot of the newer stuff though. The Gilneas zone and dungeon are both fun and provide additional places to gain XP from 40-50. Lower Karazhan Halls is a quick 10-man raid that offers slightly better gear than LBRS, roughly on par with Zul'Gurub. Emerald Sanctum is basically a higher-tier Onyxia's Lair with a bigger focus on healing. And I haven't tried the new 40-man T3.5 Tower of Karazhan, but it seems like people are liking it.

Some of them do, some of them don't. There are a number of sub-zones that I've read about but never visited just because nothing ever lead me to them. I'm pretty sure Gilneas has a breadcrumb quest in Stormwind, not sure about Hyjal, but those are easily the two biggest new zones.

Oh, and for the 5-man dungeons there are always at least a few quests you can find out and about. A few quests were even added to existing dungeons in places where there weren't any before, like Alliance now have some quests for Shadowfang Keep that you can pick up from the mage tower in Stormwind.

My main complaint is the writing for the custom quests is fucking horrendous, like they did zero proofreading and it's very noticeable.
Otherwise for just casual leveling and dungeons I find it enjoyable. Most groups are competent enough unless you get someone from the spanish guild in which case prepare for pain.

Paladin is a decent combat healer. Semi-final talent in Holy tree makes Crusader Strike reset Holy Shock every 6s. Combine this with Hand of Edward the Odd for instant Holy Lights and you throw big heals every few seconds while never going oom because you constantly auto and trigger JoWs.

PvE servers are boring, but I had some great interactions there because some people still have PvP on for some exp bonus

Yep, that's my one main complaint that I bring up every time I come into a TWoW thread. Turnover rate kills the experience and it's not even close. It's not something you can ignore, like the anime avatar (That I've never seen in 5 years of playing Turtle). I say this as a former Guild Master in Turtle: There is CONSTANT poaching. Reliable raiders are the absolute hardest thing to come by, someone who won't drop the game after clearing Naxx once and being handed the gear. Everyone has played Turtle as a tourist attraction and then leaves.

Which brings me into my next complaint: Epoch.
Epoch has promise, but unfortunately I've played all 3 and a half Beta's and, knowing Turtle, isn't going to be any better. Epoch dungeons and raiding is too hard for its own good. It's the opposite of casual. There's going to be people ragequitting the game from Deadmines. It's anti-normie in a different way.

Thank fuck Epoch is running on it's own money, because it's going to crash and burn in under a year or two. That shit's going to be 5K on release and maybe 1K average over a year because those thousand people are going to be too far in to quit. Yes I'm going to play it to prove a point.

Your average Lasher farmer can count on 100g/h if he knows what he's doing and lvl 60 epics/crafts go for 200¬300g. Only real expensive item is maybe Skullflame Shield for 1k or Tebuu for 500¬600g. Black Lotus is 15g and end-game herbs go for 70s¬1g. If you feel like it then you can create multiple alts to cash in on Mooncloth/Arcanite CDs and get 10¬15g per toon every 2 days. if gold selling was a problem on the server, then everything I described would be impossible. Either gold selling on Turtle WoW doesn't exist or it's so miniscule than it might as well not exist. It's certainly a whole lot better compared to what kind of pathology is going on retail.

The owner of the server's fishy since she lied and scammed people back in 2017 on a previous server she owned (pocketed donation money on a "non-profit server" and secretly sold gold and max level characters for real money) , but Turtle's been up since 2018 and it's become so big with a lot of staff that if the owner was still being a shady little bitch we'd have heard it by now, especially given how a lot of key figures in the Private Server community have been constantly scrutinizing and trying to infiltrate the dev team to expose them for shit and come up with nothing.

I think it's important to know what Torta (Shenna) did before Turtle and why a lot of oldfags hate her, but it's also important to understand that people change and she hasn't really been caught or exposed for anything.
