The visuals of the setpieces are fantastic. To me it's at its best when combining fantastical elements with fractures of a real city with broken up buildings. The game is an incredible beauty despite the no artstyle realism look. Pretending like the shallow braindead battlesystem and lol rich family gooning themself to death in VR plot is anywhere close to that is an insult to the artists. The character writing themself also lacks greatly because they have no real NPCs to play off during their journey. Just puppets with 1 personality formed by a 6 year old boy. The game literally cannot answer players who "get good" because they aren't playing at all - they are simply skipping the gameplay by pressing X at the correct time.
Make no mistake, many RPGs suffer the same problem by allowing players to out-grind the game and faceroll encounters, but this isn't a problem inherent to the genre, but rather one of poor design exacerbated by poor player expectations; RPG players EXPECT to be given ways to adjust the game difficulty through grinding instead of answering to the designer's demand for skill/tactics/planning/strategy. This is why excellent games like Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter and Unlimited SaGa failed to resonate with the "average" jarpiggy - because when asked to ACTUALLY think and play well to within an inch of what the game's systems will allow, JRPG players lose their shit and drop the game rather than improving their skills.
