The best thing about Dominaria and the old stories was that it worked so well with just regular people like the Weatherlight crew exploring different planes and stuff. Planeswalkers are like Jedi in that they're supposed to be mysterious, but they lose their mystique the more they're featured. Dominaria is home to many different cultures in many different time periods that many of the following sets might have taken place in because they're generally pretty mundane and rarely have a real reason to be a new exotic plane. Phyrexians are the perfect villains who represent an strange overwhelming alien force in the multiverse. Really no need to ever have any other villains.

Both have their virtues. I like the mindgames during drafting, but I also like opening my pile of cards and putting together the best pile available because it's more relaxing. I'd play the prerelease multiple times every time when I played, and I used to win pretty often. I remember in fact playing the Ravnica Allegaiance prerelease 4 times over multiple days on two different lgs and winning all of them.

I think the set looks good for the most part aside from some wonky art here and there but those lazy reprints that are just random art thrown into the card frame are so fucking bad. Wizards can get away with anything.

'regular' rules of 60x4 has a terrible problem that only gets worse as the game expands, where you are running 10 unique cardnames in your deck and you are running 3 unique card effects in your deck, and then the game boils down to who drew 3 copies of rock and who drew 1 copy of paper.

Self mill, exdeath, Galuf's final act and Reanimation all come together to form a jank combo which is very nice touch. Can't see it playable outside friendlies though.

Siege rhino gets played and drains for 3. Sheoldred either dies to instant speed removal or makes the opponent lose 2 and then dies to sorcery speed removal.

In the situation where both creatures survive for 1.5 turns so that sheoldred can catch up to the drain that siege rhino did upon resolving, siege rhino is still better because it attacks with trample.

I had some leftover XBL points and was looking through XBL arcade for a random game to play, got DoTP on a whim. thought the art was the sickest fucking art I had ever seen and so I stuck around. because there was open-mic in that game one day I managed to befriend a guy who helped me play better and invited me every now and then to their own version of FNM via the games free-for-all style 1v1v1v1 mode. I have almost dogmatically bought every DoTP since up until Duels. (IIRC DoTP was the best selling arcade game for a bit anyways).

They will definitely do another Final Fantasy set as long as Square Enix isn't against it and they will definitely partially hype it up on it having characters and more represented entries that weren't in the first set.

However, I also guarantee that that sequel set would also have another Cloud, another Sephiroth, another Tidus, another Yuna, another Lightning and at least 30 more XIV cards. The new design space is not as much as you think. They will still need their heavy hitters back with a different mechanic to them and a bunch more alt arts to get the big bucks.

If you like MTG, then Arena is fun. They have newbie-friendly free events every Tuesday through Thursday, and though it takes grinding, you can get the mastery passes and do drafts without paying any real money. Brawl is also a very newbie friendly format that isn't nearly as intensive of wildcards. I unironically recommend it.

Whenever the FF set comes out, try drafting it a couple of times. Drafting is fun as hell and in draft you'll only be playing with FF cards against FF cards, so it's the perfect fit for FF tourists.

I'm playing 13 for the first time and I can refresh you guys: a lot of the impact of his introduction is split with Fang, Cid is just there to be intimidating which isn't impactful giving everybody else in the Sanctum is chasing behind the l'Cie and then he doesn't really get any development up until the reveal before his fight, which is in itself kind of confusing with the context we are given at that point, his sacrifice feels empty.

Contrast him with Cidolfus from 12 (using him as an example because I finished 12 right before 13), we get a lot of foreshadowing/small hints about who he is and what he does for the Empire even before Balthier reveals he's his father, and then we get to see his relationship with Venat and connect the dots together before the second fight.

Cid Raines just wasn't allowed to be a proper character up until his last moments and then it was way too late.

ninjutsu is a card ability being activated, not a spell being cast. it can be stopped with stifle but not counterspell.

It's very derivative of the previous games and kind of lost some of the wonder of FF's golden age. From V to VIII every game has something completely insane about its gameplay or narrative, IX is played very safe and relies on member berries and series conventions. It is also super grindy in the latter half.

It likely needed to fill a slot. The green black draft archetype probably needed a card that was top of the curve graveyard payoff at uncommon and they are working in a highly constricted environment of using existing characters that they need to fit into the colors mechanically and flavor wise. It's probably less that she is green and more that a different more important character was deemed to be a better fit for monoblack's uncommon in the same slot in the set skeleton. Also though green mills and gets payoffs for it. Tons of monogreen cards do it.

The mechanic to redirect spells to oneself, Flagbearer, is already deprecated and disliked in the extreme.

First off: that second one has only ever been printed on two very old cards. It's also very wordy since it has to detail what it replaces it with. A better way might be "prevent all damage that would be dealt to you or creatures you control from instants or sorceries", but even that is clunky.
