Out of the 8 new subclasses I have played so far, the most disappointing one was the Death domain cleric.

Its got really great replayability, especially for the genre, and Larian keeps patching in new reasons to do another playthrough.

Paused my patch 8 while i play expedition 33. Space kino cant come soon enough.

Age of Decadence used to be my favorite niche pervert RPG but after replaying BG3 so much it's easily BG3 now. I find the entire thing enjoyable. I never reach a point where I'm disappointed to have combat, and dialog regularly has new little lines based on choices/class/race/origin character/etc where even after multiple playthroughs I see new little pieces here and there. Having a lot of options I guess. I've been replaying in a way that goes against all the decisions I've made previously. It's been interesting seeing how much encounters and locations can differ.
Siding with Ketheric in Act 2 has been pretty fun so far but killing off half the potential companions off has been rough.

Ye. Githyanki Bladesinger; Phalar Aluve and Booming Blade makes it feel like a mobile Paladin. I have a buddy that drops in and out as a Human Swashbuckler whenever we're both on and he seems to be having a good time.

Only thing I don't like about Patch 8 so far is I'm not noticing any unique dialogue options for the new subclasses I've tried. I imagine there are a couple lines for Crown Paladin at least but can anyone verify?

That is why after the initial plot and motivation gets dropped quickly. It was just a reason to get all the characters together and have them to work together. Being able to communicate without talking. Suddenly in shadowlands whole focus goes to Shadowheart because she was pseudo mc with her artifact. Nobody cared about the homebrew parasite mechanics more than "cool powers". And dropping occasional plotpoints randomly about it as "nudge nudge go there" but whole focus is on the origin chars anyway.

It seems like the kind of a thing somebody would do to make their OC seem extra special and stand out from the other player's characters.

I have hard time focusing on origin char plotlines, and only some unique legendary weapons/armor matters at that point. Doesn't help that you can respec for free(you can always pick pocket Wither as he won't fight you back so you just need to have 100 gold initially). Also first thing I always do is to respec Shadowheart to have proper stats and different domain.
The game while advertising itself as RPG and having consequences, really doesn't. You can slaughter druids and tieflings, then go to Last Light Inn and the game just let's you do that.
Do you know who are only ones who it affects? Origin chatacters! You can be as degen as you want but you still are "the good guy" and the game doesn't punish you.
And being a good guy is both easier and gives more xp, making you reach level cap easier... But being murderhobo also achieves that but just bit slower despite being more fun.

Also when you know the secret of open palm munk 9 + thief 3 you can never unsee it.
AND that it doesn't affect your game at all if you use every parasite. Nobody looks at you differently in Baldur's Gate despite having veins bulging from your face and being able to fly etc.
It's just direct upgrade. There is no penalty. It's only very lite roleplay choice that is just for yourself without any consequences but only more OP powers.

I liked WotR and I played Demon path in it on core. It suffers from the problem of being too ambitious and not devoting genough resources to accommodate the given mythic options. I slaughtered the Queen and her armies, yet the game continues on as before, barely a few flavour dialogue lines change. Dance of Masks has a different coloured fireworks, I guess. I went to Iz and killed Deskari, then went on to Ineluctable Prison, yet Baphomet talks like Deskari is alive and waiting in Iz, with no option for me to correct him. Problems like these are constant, making it impossible to take the story seriously. Act 5 as a whole was a mess.

I still liked the game overall, as the character building is miles better than BG3's (Pathfinder is obviously better than 5e DnD). I just wished Owlcat bothered to actually look through the game's dialogue regarding the mythic paths and fix it. Demon just doesn't work, because they reuse general lines for it.

Also, I didn't like that the ascension ending stories were less interesting than the general ones. I did ascension first, then just regular demon tardrage ending, and the latter was far more interesting. Camellia best girl

The illusion of build autism where 10 feat chains out 1000 bloat are only good ones, a load screen on every action you do, ridiculous prebuffing game literally is unplayable without bubble buff mod, every NPC dropping books worth of irrelevant lore dump i have to click through in hope of finding a quest (bg2 also wasnt fully voiced and didnt feel like a chore, sometiems more is not better) absolutely atrocious puzzles annoying to solve even with youtube solution, encounter and combat design is just pure stat check theres no nuance or fun mechanics. I liked the game despite all of that but everytime i think about coming back i remind myself i will have to re-read all the feats i dont remember anymore and spend 50minutes each level up to decide what to pick. i would rather play something not tedious and have fun.

That's indeed the point. BG3's perceived "greatness" as an RPG is not the main reason of it's success. Sky-high budget, huge emphasis on presentation, beginner-friendly design choices, lots of player freedom and reactivity. Only the last one is what you'd traditionally consider a prime value for a CPRG. But Swen understands that the same high he got upon playing Ultima VI upon the first time goes a long way. Given some of the changes Bethesda introduced not even opinions like are far fetched. I'd mainly attribute it's success to the fact that it was the most suitable sandbox game to fuck around and find your own spots of fun with minimal resistance, which allowed millions of people who have never even touched video games before to become involved. (The influx actually started years earlier but Skyrim greatly accelerated it. It was truly a perfect place at the perfect time situation.) The same logic as I outlined at . It's not a coincidence the legacy of these titles are never being innovative, genre-defying or extremely well-crafted but that they simply sold this and that much and that gives weight to their word.

We're not in a disagreement. I've been saying this for a while but modern Larian has always been very normalfag-friendly. This was apparent at very least by D:OS-EE. Swen is the Normalfag Whisperer if you will. And this is not a slight on him, he's obviously a decorated and really competent dev with genuine passion for the medium. But this is what really separates him from the rest. Look up his general philosophy on game development and everything will be clear. We have numerous other devs who are at least as talented and experienced as he is, but the way he conducts his business is an extremely fantastic fit with the state of the industry and the transforming target audience. Him getting his major breakthrough was only matter of time and resources.

Many people misattribute their success to factors that weren't the primary reasons behind it. You can say that their "impact on the industry" and their sky-high sale numbers themselves makes them correct by default but do you honestly think that's the end of the discussion?

I started playing the game recently and I didn't expect it to still be discussed here. I haven't played a new rpg in a while and was never big on crpgs so my experience was:

Combat/Classsystem:
There are basically three archetypes, fighter, rogue and spellcaster, every class just feels like a little flavor on top of that. Spellcasters have good replayability because of a huge spell variety and because making low tier spells work is fun, the other 2 archetypes not so much. I had fun ignoring the meta build guides and trying to figure out the most op multiclass combos though. I think you will have the most fun with the game if you make your class/skill decisions purely based on roleplaying (like with DnD), overall I would say the combat is fun, even one of the strong suits of the game.

Story/meaningful Decisions:
I think the writing was decent, not great but good enough to keep me engaged most of the time. Some anons make the point that it's generic, which I think is fair. There's tons of unnecessary flavor dialogue in the game where you don't even get hit back with a unique voiceline, at no point in the game I had the impression that being a half-orc or a berserker or a baldurian really mattered. Your stats feel like they matter most of the time though because of the constant rolls and mostly unique dialogue following the results. The big decisions you make do feel like they matter (joining/opposing Ketheric, joining opposing Goblins, just killing everybody).

Like 50% of them just aren't aimed at me, Gale, Halsin, Astarion are too faggy for my taste, Wyll's introduction was so lame I killed him right of the bat so I don't know much about him. Is their audience really 50% queers and women (fujoshis) at this point? With companions you have the choice who you engage with/ who you just kill but you can't help wondering what could have been done with all the resources going into those shitty characters. Beyond that now every other couple is queer, which ruins the setting for me a little bit but not to the point it's unplayable for me. Only point I really got turned of by it is when they chose to make the daughter of the goddess Selune herself, which is otherwise with the cinematography and shit portrayed as this angelic figure a raging horny dyke who rizzed up the daughter of the main villain of act two a long time ago. But overall this point doesn't way heavy to the point of ruining the game for me.

All in all I'd say the game is a strong 6/10, mabye weak 7/10, it felt good to dip my toes in the mainstream again after so long, playing with normie friends, knowing what's being referenced in popular culture etc. Game journos are overselling it and sucking of the Larian guy for it not having any microtransactions, which in a sane world with sane consumers would just be the standard, but I guess if I had to play Ubisoft games for a living a would give Bg3 a 10/10 too.
