Even though it has terrible yield (4 tons per hectare), isn't drought resistant, and can only survive in cool climates. The US has a better strain of japonica (Calrose) which has more than double the yield, is drought resistant, and can be harvested multiple times a year in all climate.

The Japanese has too much pride to buy foreign rice, from the US who did their rice better, and especially from China.

The average Japanese would rather buy more expensive rice and eat the costs rather than buy cheaper imports.
