How does anyone defend this slow plodding piece of junk? There's nothing redeeming it either. The combat is wait and press A to win. The sailing is play a song and move in a straight line over an empty world. The puzzles are spoonfed. Is this the power of a decent artstyle + nostalgia? Nobody thinking clearly worships Wind Waker. The whole game is about squandering as much time as possible in the lamest ways possible.

Wind Waker, Sunshine, Melee, Double Dash, Fire Emblem, etc. etc. etc. etc., the story is always the same.

Sunshine and Melee are fun mechanics with depth, where it's fun to move around even if there are some obvious flaws. But Wind Waker has jack shit aside from nice designs and music. Never played Fire Emblem.

They got retarded with the not-Ocarina. Interrupting the final boss in ST to make you blow the DS was the critical point.

Don't confuse the internet with reality.
The "Celda" reveal was like the 9/11 of things that happened in 2001 and even Miyamoto desperately tried to get Aonuma to change it to something cooler. Twilight Princess's reveal at E3 2004 was one of the hypest moments in E3 history and quickly became the best selling Zelda and the face of the franchise until Breath of the Wild replicated its hype and tripled its success as the launch title for the Switch.

But if there's something the internet loves, it's being contrarians. Twilight Princess is too popular? No the game everybody is cheering is replacing it is suddenly an underrated masterpiece

Personally I was more traumatized by having to play the wind song every time I wanted to turn my fucking ship.

Ironically, the art style ended up being the only thing that aged well about WW (not HD), and even then Aonuma rapidly drove it into the fucking ground and inspired a second wave of distaste for it. 6 out of 7 of the mainline games released under him in the 2000s had the toon artstyle.

I've replayed all 3D zeldas this year and WW was my biggest disappointment. TP is the better gamecube zelda.

It was really subversive of Aonuma's first Zelda game to make the player character the villain. Not many people would do that.

all of the people who made zelda good got promoted to mario after the n64 games and then on top of that the game was 1: unfinished because the gamecube was failing and they needed to get something hype out already and 2: nintendo stopped listening to their western branch so they made every game easy as fuck

this leads to a game where technically you play your magic songs about as often as OOT, only they cut out most of what filled the gap between flute songs in that game and by trying to make it less autopilot (actually conduct notes vs mash out the buttons) they just made it really annoying

Mashing out a song is 10x better than waiting for the metronome. Man, Wind Waker is just incompetent in every little way. Take the room in the Wind Temple where you get the hookshot: after you get it, you have to use it on a target on the wall to get up to a platform. On that platform is a skull hammer switch. Why? There's no other spot in the dungeon immediately before or after you need the skull hammer. Why not have it be a regular switch? Why force the player to open the menu, equip the hammer?

Link wasn't the villain, it was King Daphnes.

Wind Waker has good camera controls because of the C-Stick. I'll give it that.

WW's dungeons being so crap mystifies me because Aonuma was still pretty fresh off of designing OoT and MM's dungeons (which were "okay" at the very worst but mostly great).
The more I look back with hindsight, the more I get the impression that Aonuma naively/arrogantly bet MASSIVELY on WW being an immediate breakout smash hit to define his full-lead tenure over the Zelda series and then make it "his".

Best atmosphere of any game ever. The water is mostly just solid blue but it looks better than any unreal slop I've seen. I bet they based the whole toon theme on this water. They wanted to make an ocean-based zelda and knew that this would look way better than any photorealism (and possibly the fact they didn't want you seeing anything underneath it).

The way the boat bobs, link's hat flails, the sail flaps, the animated wake. The wind streams, the clouds moving, the seagulls. The island from a far-off distance. And of course the music and sound. Chef's kiss.

Despite his thinly veiled disdain for the N64 games, Aonuma simply cannot and likely will not ever get out of their shadow. At this point, I wish he'd move on for everyone's sake, but 20+ years have shown his inability to. The most recent 2D and 3D games are still lifting things from OOT.

The toon style is exclusive to Wind Waker and the two DS games. Skyward Sword's style was something entirely different, and BotW/TotK is an iteration on that more than anything.
