Publishers don't cancel a game unless they have zero faith in the developer. Normally they want something to come out and will give them an extension. I think they literally had almost nothing ot show for it. Development must have been chaos.

The game was announced and I think they spent 2.5 years twiddling their thumbs hiring people and accomplishing nothing. They didn't have even a cinematic trailer, let alone a gameplay trailer. It wouldn't shock me if they were starting, restarting, etc.

Unknown 9 had a similar dev hell situation of an announcement with big news, then people stopped caring. At least that got trailers eventually (after initial interest died) and got released (to no attention).

They were hiring the people to be in the position to start making a game in like 6 months time. EA made the right call as I can see this game taking 8 years and needing outside help to get it done.

Reminds me of Keiji "Conman" Inafune's Kaio King of Pirates game. Announced with fanfare, the studio apparently had fuck all to show for it, and it was cancelled in 2015 and cost the studio like 4.6 million. This game probably cost 20-35 million.
