I'm not sure. I think almost everything is viable except for solo getter. The Combo Breaker set had a lot of repitition but I believe EVO JP was pretty varied. I think there was a Dancouga in CB even.

almost every character is viable and you can still do well with the worst ones at lower ranks
most characters are around 50% wr globally but imo this is more because the game's extremely volatile, if you look at the individual character kits, it's obvious some (mostly shotos) have way more privilege due to their toolkit + frame data

the part that sucks the most right now is the game has a fuckton of corner carry (literally one hit midscreen can send you to the corner, iirc some characters can even do corner to corner routes), and corner pressure is about looping strike/throw/shimmy while the defense is forced to guess on which one will happen

I don't see it happening, and even if it does I don't see it being successful. I feel like Dead or Alive just has such an established reputation as 'that volleyball game for porn addicts' in the wider videogame community, and if it were just that that would be one thing, but a lot of fans of the series who will actually put down money for it, and a lot of money at that, will put down more for the gacha because those people don't want to play a fighting game. There isn't much incentive for them to make a new fighting game with its reputation being what it is when they can profit more off that reputation with the gacha, and any attempts to try to reshape the reputation the series has has blown up in their face in the past.

To be fair most of the overheads are very slow, 6A is especially easy to punish, and the same goes for the command grab.

REVO is only active in Japan. It's obvious when you look at the player activity chart over time. Even something like SC6 probably has more players outside of Japan. Few Japs use Fightcade because they've been indoctrinated to fear piracy and anything "unofficial."

yes but the numbers aren't the problem. it's the matchmaking. it doesn't work. there is no list lobby like +R/fightcade etc. there is just ranked (where the matchmaking breaks constantly) or literal SF4 era king of the hill rooms... where it doesn't show the connection until after you join the room. and no wifi indicator.

there is also an (((feature))) where if i set my delay to 3 (because the netcode kinda sucks) and you set yours to 0. everyones gets set to 0. so timmy's that don't understand how rollback works ruins the game for everyone.

One of many reasons Strive did and is doing so well to this day because it's combo system and specific kind of gatlings being a form of mash people like much more.

Even setting aside visuals, I was really pleased with how varied the characters felt mechanically in SamSho. Stuff like Shizumaru's TAP, Yoshitora's 7th sword or even just Yashamaru's double jump showed that even a simple game can have distinct characters, which I did not really feel with vanilla GBVS, but maybe the characters in it stand out more now.

Poor bastards look like they got flattened by a trash compactor. They're some of the most fucked proportions you're ever gonna see in a 2d fighter, and that includes budget western ones.

For me it's that piece of shit Athena sprite. Never gonna understood people who praised that game as some pinnacle of 2d all these years.

XIII is praised for the fluidity and detail on such large sprites, whereas the closest analogues were ArcSys 2D games which had way less frames of animation and just had super strong keyframes they'd linger on instead. However that effect came from rotoscoping 3D models which were obviously really poorly-made given the proportions, and that also lead to a very anemic and plain roster (no Mai in XII, obscure characters added for the sake of being easy like Hwa Jai using Joe's body, simplified designs like Mature & Vice getting simple black suits, XIII's DLC all being sprite reuse with minor visual differences outside of visual effects). XIII also uses a lot of visual effects that add to how it looks (HD Mode trails, particle effects, the lighting on each stage which affects the sprites) which helps it look better in motion, and the stages while not on par with the VERY best of the Neo Geo are all really beautiful and lively.

It wasn't worth the 2nd bankruptcy but despite the fucked up proportions and cutbacks the game looks good in motion.

The second they start throwing in more than just jab dash jab you have more options depending on what character you play. One common option to deal with dash jabs is to just hold up/back and chicken block the string.

I can give you DNF but UMvC3 is the best fighting game of all time. Nen Impact won't touch it but it really looks like the kind of game 8ing were making in the mid-late 00s but with a bunch of mechanics from their Vs Capcom games stapled to it; DNF had that feel at first but the lack of good mobility alongside checkmate situations being a little too common kneecapped it.
