It's close..... guys.... it's very close to finally being able to fully replace Windows for a gaming machine. It already runs many games better than Windows. Within the next couple of months/year it could be the end of Windows for millions of people. Fuck Winshit and fuck Microshit

Yup, once the Oculus software and kernel level multiplayer anti cheat shit works on SteamOS I'm done with Windows

I mean it's technically already here if you have an AMD Gpu.
Really the only annoying thing is the installer expects you to specifically have an nvme drive
t. fucked around with it on my desktop

I mean it's technically already here if you have an AMD Gpu.

I do have an AMD GPU, but I hope Nvidia starts taking Linux seriously. Linux needs that.

The only thing I need is what this anon said about multiplayer anti-cheat . I still need to play multiplayer games with my friends every now and then.

Nvidia does take Linux seriously but only for datacenters. They couldn't care any less for gaming on Windows or Linux. Hence why their drivers are dogshit for gaming compared to AMD in 2025.

I switched to Linux years ago with no issues. I even have nvidia. I don't know why you would use steam os though just get a normal distro.

Same reason why anyone would chose any particular distribution

I want these packages and this configuration

Nvidia is at the point where they no longer crash doing basic desktop shit but they still get 20-30% perf drop just by using VKD3D/DXVK. It's a driver issue that Nvidia won't solve.

Out of the box experience is much better than other distros for gaming. The trick to making SteamOS win over Windows is to make it as idiot proof as you possibly can

download steam

play games

what a challenge

dx12 nvidia performance is holding me back desu

Like I said not a good out of the box experience. Also, what about Proton? When I said idiot proof, I meant it. With other words, not going into settings and ticking shit on. Install it and go.

Genuinely IF this actually works for a gaming pc then fuck using windows anymore.

The only issue I have is how it would update the graphics card drivers

You underestimate the stupidity of Linux users. Steam popping up right after 1st boot, ready to go, would be appealing to a lot of people who are not as intelligent as yourself.

Proton works automatically on Steam on any Linux distro in the same way it works on Steam OS.

It's been 3 years

We're still pretending like there was any legitimacy to Linus Tech Tits intentionally "breaking" his installation with a bug he had to look up and literally nobody for a minute should be convinced he wouldn't have known what he was doing (the bug was fixed at the time if you weren't using deliberately out of date installation media)

I hope so.

How come Windows has no fanbase? I've never seen this before from such a major product. macOS, Linux, iOS, Android etc. all these things have dedicated fans. Everyone is indifferent to Windows or fucking hates it, and wouldn't mind switching to a viable alternative if they could. Microsoft is such a fucking garbage company. They had something going with the Xbox and fucked that up. They fuck up everything they touch

who the fuck is a "fan" of Android

Driver is baked into the kernel in Linux. It's called monolithic kernel. When you update Linux, you get new driver.

There's no point to this on desktop, you can go Bazzite or whatever and get the exact same out of the box experience. It's literally just Arch with Steam and Gamescope preinstalled.

Is this a serious question? What the fuck am I reading right now? The Android subreddit literally has 3 fucking million followrs. Dude, go to XDA forums to see hundreds of thousands of people tinkering with their Android phones. There are plenty of people who only buy Android phones and refuse to buy iOS devices

so tinkering with the operating system makes you a fan? Refusing to use other operating systems makes you a fan? So by that logic, Windows has a ton of "fans."

Why does the parasite in home and office computing that people only tolerate to run the applications they actually want to use not have any fans?

Truly a mystery.

its hard to feel passionate about the "default" option. same reason we dont have a straight pride month (not to Anon Babblesperg)

Linus

People really believe this wasnt done on purpose?
From the same guy who had his followers abuse and harass a teenage kid into suicide all because of a fucking YouTube plak award he didnt get in an auction

Yes, people are that dumb.
They also WILL NOT BELIEVE YOU if you tell them you could have fixed what was broken with a single line and a reboot.

Already there. Unless you play anti cheat cancer

Saars....

No idea what I will do after October. I'd like to swap to linux but I have Nvidia graphics card and I'm a brainlet despite having used ubuntu before

Cant they make it work with nvidea?

so tinkering with the operating system makes you a fan?

I would say that installing custom Android ROMs and rooting your phone makes you a pretty big fucking fan, yes. It means you've got a lot of interest in the platform. Changing your wallpaper and the color of your taskbar isn't exactly what I call "tinkering". 3+ million users on a very active Android subreddit + a major Android focused modding website + YT channels with millions of views, that makes Android have actual fans, yes. What happens when I type in "Windows" on YouTube? I get thousands of people crying about it. And I haven't used Android for over 10 years now.

Refusing to use other operating systems makes you a fan?

Yes. Literally yes. My entire point in the original post was that people use Windows not because they WANT to, but because they HAVE to. People buy Android phones, because they WANT to. There's something there that they cannot get on iOS.

I mean you're making a mistake in believing anyone is actually a fan of android.
But you are right that people don't like windows because they "Have" to use it, rather than it being a good product.
t. can't install linux on my phone because my carrier said they wouldn't let me

it also needs to have some sort of official support from a company so the distro doesnt just dies out
I hope they commit and people start adopting it
microsoft is being a next level giga jew nigger now and giving almost everyone cancer

The trick to making SteamOS win over Windows is to make it as idiot proof as you possibly can

Yeah. All a distro ever had to do to gain home desktop users was a full GUI, standardized and semi-automated software installation, and good software support. An OS exists to facilitate accessing software, the less the user has to think about the OS itself the better it is. The thing about linux shills is that they forget that Windows has a terminal and you can brick the installation by deleting critical system files if you really want to, but the surface of Windows works well enough (or at least used to) that the user doesn't need to "look under the hood" even if they have the power to do so. Linux distros struggle with something that Microsoft got right 30 years ago because the devs don't think the user experience is a critical component of an OS. I've said before that a distro is just a programmer hobby and completing it would defeat the point because the programmer just wants to tinker. They don't do any real work on a computer that takes priority over the OS itself.

Linux shills

Erm Windows works gr8

No, we have this conversation nearly every thread, people use windows because they have a straight up monopoly in the retail space.
Has nothing to do with quality or usability.

this is a pretty based post and perfectly sums up my feeling about linux distros
they all have their purpose but they will never become mainstream unless somebody actually sits down and makes it as easy to use for normies as possible

cant they make a anti cheat solution that works like xbox x hyper-v?
or something like that so companies can run their game in a private area and have their anti cheat run in that without anything having access to the memory or anything else?

How bad is it to stay on windows 10? Is it like I’m going to immediately get my computer fucked by an exploit if I’m unlucky? I have a nvidia 1060 so I dunno if linux can work.

All a distro ever had to do to gain home desktop users was a full GUI, standardized and semi-automated software installation, and good software support

These are all in Linux and have been for years. There are plenty of idiot proof distros like Ubuntu, Mint and Pop OS. You can even buy PCs with them preinstalled.

It's not that bad but it will get worse the longer you stay on it.

If steamOS worked like how it currently does on the steam deck and gave users a choice of changing between desktop mode and big picture mode then I honestly cant see many people staying with windows

That is literally how Linux works right now.

It's not. I've tried linux and its abit different. It's not as easy to set up and idiots will fuck it up by messing with things they dont understand.

The decks version of linux is abit streamlined and something I'd love to have as an os for a pc because it just cuts out 80% of the bullshit windows forces on you

Isn't SteamOS and all Linux distros open source? Meaning it can be maintained by others? Or this it not feasible?

Here's one new policy that Steam could enact to officially make current year "Year of the Linux desktop."

Online games / Anti-Cheats must not blacklist Linux

That's it. Then everything will be perfect.

Imagine all the security issues of XP, but instead of being slowly found over a decade of being unused, they're released by the unethical retards that run microsoft these days.

How do you acquire and install third party software on Ubuntu, Mint or Pop OS?

Steam OS is just Arch Linux set to start Steam in big picture mode.

Or we could just not do anticheat shitware because it's a total meme.

You use the software center or get it from a website or something. Same as on Windows.

Its abit different anon. I've messed around with it.

isn't this only meant to be for portable devices

I meant it needs that for public success because normies are braindead
also being open source doesnt guarantees the os will get high quality updates
in the end money rules and even devs want to put food on their table so they might not have time to maintain it and others have to pick up the slack
if linux was backed by a giga corpo that was fed up with microsofts shit, you would see mass adoption by now, a paid dev has more reasons to commit to his work than a foss dev which would lead to faster and better development

Technically yes.

Does it support DirectX without translating it to the vastly inferior Vulkan?

If you mean the deck then yes. Were saying having it as an OS with the option to change between desktop and BP mode would be fantastic as we could drop windows then.

A user on steam has already installed it on a pc for experimenting and claims it's working all (All AMD he says) and that the os noticed he wasnt on a deck and isnt showing a battery option among other things

you can switch to windows 10 ltsc and have support until 2032 if you are ok with piracy

Isn't Vulkan better than DirectX?

Of course not. It's open source.

since ai is most of nvidia's market share doesn't it make sense for them to have good linux drivers?

So how come when people turned on Vulkan in DOOM, people got 4x the framerate compared to DirectX?

Not in any meaningful way.

they probably do, they just don't half a shit about consumer usage anymore

fully replacing Windows

Did this years ago. Just wait 2 more weeks.

Steam
ing hot
Pile of
steamy

When did Doom ever run in D3D? I'll wait.

I think hes baiting
Vulkan runs most stuff better than directx coz it's faster.
If its simplified and made easy to set up without it being obvious to the normie on HOW to fuck it up then yes it is in a meaningful way

Vulkan runs most stuff better than directx coz it's faster.

There's a reason nobody uses it.

inertia over moving away from the default?

The bait is weak with this one

check box to start steam in big picture mode

it's a real puzzle, how could someone possibly do this?

nobody but id makes Vulkan games

games are ugly and run on potatoes

it's bait

Various emulators like yuzu and ryujinx use vulkan as do many others.
Fucks sake get an education.

emulator devs are nobodies

genuinely if you use directX for path of exile you might be the biggest retard on the planet.

If you play F2P games, you're already outmatched mentally by Brick Tamland.

path of exile 2 is a 30 dollar game you can buy on the steam store

Blacks have entered the chat

Run games

Lier, you know it can’t run games without Proton.

It's a F2P game you can pay to play the beta of, making you even dumber for buying free software.

So much better dude. DirectX/HLSL is legacy based software now. Even Microsoft is admitting defeat because their next gen Shader Model is using SPIR-V from Linux.

Many games offer native OpenGL or Vulkan support. Valve games and Minecraft are prime example.

Once it lets me wear my shackles again I'm switching over!

shackles is being told u cant play a game on your machine though, anon

I'm pretty sure not HAVING to play modern shitware as a job or getting buttfucked on whatever fomo crap wouldn't qualify as being shackled.

I've always wondered if Linux users are hipsters, and like Linux because it's not popular. I wonder what it would do to them if one day, in the near future, Linux would become widespread and more popular than Windows. Would they abandon Linux?

I'm convinced that people who don't want to leave windows because 'linux is too hard' or 'want something tailored entirely to their needs' has never taught themselves how to do anything, and are afraid of losing the training wheels.

Android is already more popular than Windows.

Linux is used by tech nerds mostly. They're too autistic to care about what's "cool" or popular.

if Linux users are hipsters, and like Linux because it's not popular.

You have the definition of hipster backwards.
And also no, I just use Linux because windows is annoying and sucks

Windows phone had some fans.

So the new thing for SteamOS did basically just adds a check that's meant to encourage devs to get rid of secondary launchers?

I pray steam OS is good because I need to avoid subscription based windows 12 at all costs

subscription based windows 12 at all costs

there'll be a free tier with plenty of ads don't worry

It even runs Microsoft's own first party games better, what an embarrassment.

because Denuvo doesn't work on Linux so they're not paying the Denuvo tax

Every time Microsoft gets a dedicated fanbase they shit in their mouth. Xbox is a great example of this. Microsoft doesn't have any fans and they sure as hell don't deserve any. Microsoft needs to be broken up to fix it. Even what's left of the Xbot fanbase is calling for Microsoft to just drop hardware and become third party now.

I would happily switch but didn't they say they won't support steam is for desktop use?
its just for game boxes

dude what if the anticheat was running but it couldn't look at memory access dood

are you genuinely retarded

What would be ideal is for SteamOS to have both a "gaming mode" to turn it into a console and a desktop mode to turn it into a regular Windows/Linux distro environment. I don't think this'll be too hard to do. Maybe it already can actually do something like that. I'm not too familiar with SteamOS

they just said this release was specifically meant for handheld PCs like the Ally and not intended for desktop use, not that there were no plans whatsoever for an eventual "generic"/desktop version

a subscription based windows is genuinely something that should not be allowed to exist

Out of the box experience is much better than other distros for gaming.

Because it's pre-installed on all devices it actually supports, and because it's tailored to that hardware. All of that goes away in a hypothetical desktop release.

Huh? So you're saying that linux users can pirate games with denuvo while windows users cannot?
I think you're bullshitting

I dunno how universally applicable it is, but at the very least Total War Warhammer's Linux version doesn't have Denuvo while the Windows version still does.

As i understand it's not, because most games run through proton, which works with windows version of the games. So basically with denuvo other drm stuff and anticheats that work with the setup.

When the Steam Deck 2 releases in 2027 with Zen 5 UDNA Microsoft is going to be looking very stupid for not releasing that in-house dockable Xbox handheld to compete. It's over for them. Microsoft should stop making console and just go full third party.

maybe it's just for games that have an actual Linux version rather than having to pass through a compatibility layer (of which I imagine there are few with Denuvo as it is)

It's already running other handhelds better. Steam is going to set gaming free.

How the fuck does macOS have better native game support compared to Linux? Really?

iirc macos is using a translation layer while linux is native. if you count translation layer on linux (dxvk) then its like windows.

1. MacOS was (and, outside of gaming, still is) more popular than Linux. If I remember correctly, it was only a few years ago that MacOS, rather than Linux, held the second-place spot in the Steam hardware survey's OS ranking. Prior to Proton, I'm quite sure, there were more MacOS gamers than Linux gamers, and so developers were more willing to port to MacOS.
2. Due to Steam Play making it so much easier to run Windows games on Linux while doing nothing for MacOS, developers might still be more willing to port to MacOS today, because Linux users can just use Steam Play to run the Windows version of a game but MacOS users cannot. In other words, MacOS needs native ports more than Linux does. Yes, I realize that's a GOG screenshot, but Steam is very relevant as always.

many games

lol no
not without troubleshooting every time something updates and breaks dependencies
not dealing with it, linuxtranny

Well your first issue there is that GOG are assholes to linux users and even with that list a bunch of games include the linux version as "goodies".

They had something going with the Xbox

xbox never had the cult that nintendo or sony had. xbox players in my experience were the kinds of people that had money enough not to care, and would get a pc or another console to play whatever they wanted.

personally when Spencer first announced that all first party games would come to PC, i built a PC that year and stayed on PC.

They did at one point but Microsoft has this thing where they hate their fans and do whatever what's in their power to get them to leave their platform, the end result is that they have no one. Nintendo, Valve, and early Sony cultivated fans, Sega cultivated fans, Microsoft never did and when they did, corporate got rid of them.

i moved from xbox live to pc gamepass. i follow halo
nintendo some how mind broke their fans into playing with children's toys forever.
sony fans are trapped with their sunk costs, buying 70-80 dollar games instead of fire alarm batteries.

xbox never had the cult that nintendo or sony had.

I think this is true, but I would like to add that Microsoft, back in the 2000s with the original Xbox and Xbox 360, was a new player compared to Sony which entered the game an entire generation before that. When the Xbox 360 launched in 2005, they were in the game for just 4 years. They were neck and neck with the PS3. And we all know the Xbox 360 was the superior console compared to the PS3. Games ran like fucking trash on the PS3 compared to the Xbox 360. This is a fact.

If the Xbox One was a success, which meant them not going full fuckin retard in 2013, I bet Xbox would have a real passionate following by now. Halo, Gears, Forza, they had some real bangers during the 360 days. Why wouldn't they get a passionate following? They just needed another success and some more time to properly establish themselves. It's just like this anon says really . I remember a lot of podcasts, magazines, YouTube channels and shit around the Xbox 360.

At this point, I'm a Nintendo and Valve guy now. I'm going for the Switch 2 and later Steam Deck 2 when it comes, I was a tendie (still am) but I can play Microsoft's game on the Deck 2 and Sony's good games on their too. There's no reason to own an Xbox or PlayStation anymore.

i was around for all of that. Halo and Morrowind on Xbox pretty much got me to ignore sony from that point on. But a lot of discourse online and other gaming communities made it clear who Sony's fanbase was. They were people who didnt have the money to pay for online. CoD youtubers i watched at the time would intentionally play on PS3 because its playerbase was not only cheap but bad at games (built for movie games), making it easy to post big wins. But that Sony fanbase made their poverty console into their very being.

Xbox One was forever damaged by that 1 E3 where sony mocked used games. From Xbox One on I havent purchased a physical game, much like pc players. It was only a point for Poverty gamers, but they were so loud i guess it stuck.

Why wouldn't they get a passionate following?

i follow halo, but i am not a fan of microsoft.
but nintendo and sony have fans of nintendo and sony.

oooh i'm cooming

There definitely are some hipsters but the majority like myself just want more users so developers actually have to give a shit about making native software for Linux.
