Undertale could've been a visual novel and I still would've read it and said some shit like "getting real Umineko vibes from this". The fact that there's gameplay even though it's barebones(outside of the meta stuff) adds to the feeling of freedom and choice.

Dark December - A Wholistic Deltarune Theory
Intro:
This is a large scale theory that basically lays out how December Holiday (Dess) is the core of Deltarune's mysteries and plotline. Essentially, I'll be positing that she's taking a similar roll to Asriel/Flowey in Undertale: the conflict is based on what happened to her, what she's doing now, and the plot will lead to her being revealed as the focal point everything revolves around. This theory takes a LOT of leaps of logic and pure speculation in parts. I don't expect all of this to be 100% true and understand there's many that won't agree with or like certain takes in this theory. The point is just that this is the result of me overthinking all the theory stuff from the game from beginning to end and trying to predict where things will be going before Chapters 3 & 4 even come out. I had originally planned to write this out with all the bits and pieces of "evidence" I had for the theories presented, but honestly it was such a web that I decided it was better to write it out as more of a "story" going over the full narrative I'm thinking is behind the base of the game. So if you don't agree with the bulk of it, just treat it like some fanfic, since that's a lot of what it is ultimately unless it gets proven over time.
Part 1 - The Legend of Deltarune:
We'll be taking things from a chronological process here to keep things in line. So, to start, we have to go way back. To when Dess was still around and things weren't totally screwed.
Dess, Asriel, Kris and Noelle were all close, as were their parents. They played together regularly and Kris was a mischievous but nice kid with a red horn headband from Toriel so they could fit in with their monster family. Not sure if they were adopted or what, but they're clearly not a monster and that caused some contention for them so the headband let them feel more in line with their friends and family.
I guess I need to post more about how I want to jump Gaster from behind and tie his hands behind his back with a belt. Then I'm gonna bend him over the counter, get out a crop and whip him from behind for being bratty at the operating table the previous day. He is whipped 20 times. Then I'll tear off his pants, apply lube and prep his asshole with a buttplug(because I'm not evil). Then I stick my dick into his butthole and fuck him with vigor intensity. Dess and Asriel, being older, kept Noelle and Kris happy and safe as they played games.
There's one in particular that's important to what will be happening here. From going to church regularly, the kids would all come to know the stories of "The Angel" and the symbol "The Deltarune" which are of importance to their faith, but not really something the kids would understand normally. So what would they do instead? Make it a game of course. The Legend of the Deltarune: a game they'd play off in the forest outside the church together. The game was run by Dess, taking on the roll of "The Angel" that controls the world. The others then take up rolls upholding the balance of light and dark: a human (Kris), a monster (Noelle), and a Prince from the Dark (Asriel, who insisted on the name). These games they played varied with different themes and rules. But if they got too rowdy with it, played too many games, eventually a fight could break out between the kids, throwing off the "balance" and resulting in a "Roaring" of yelling. And what happens at that point? Well the "Titans" would appear: their parents. They come in to the kids fighting and tell them it's time to stop, the game is over. All their imaginary toys and friends are left behind as they return to being nothing. An endless night (forced bedtime) takes over.
I'm describing the prophecy that Ralsei explains throughout the game. It's all just the setting and rules of a game that Dess and the kids played together when they were young. So why is it then coming up again in the modern time and seems so real? For that, we need to go forward in time to Dess' disappearance.
Part 2 - Entry Number 17:
As stated, the kids played in the forest. In that forest, you can find a bunker that seems to lead underneath the city. This bunker is extensive, extending all the way under the city in a sprawling maze of tunnels. The kids would obviously not be allowed to go down there. And of course, they would anyways.
Just started Undertale, what am i in for?
And this would lead to the tragedy that sets this whole story on it's path.
Somehow Kris wound up in the bunker. Perhaps they wanted to explore it out of their defiant nature or whatever, but they went on and got themselves lost. Kris luckily finds themselves with Dess as they work through the dark tunnels. She went in after him as she's braver than Asriel, leaving him and Noelle at the entrance to wait. To calm Kris, Dess uses her musical prowess and sings him a song: Don't Forget. A calming tune reminding Kris that they're not alone in the dark and that she's there with them. As they get along, they find a strange door. See, the tunnels had at least one purpose: a genius scientist was researching something down there. And the kids just found him at a very special time running a very important experiment. They open the door to find him making a log:

He turns from his whirring machines to the children who had wandered in and were watching on in horror.
"WHAT DO YOU TWO THINK?"
IN that moment, his experiment went haywire. He was researching a special matter, "Darkness" and it was now starting to spread outward and engulf the lab and everything beyond it. Dess took Kris and ran, desperately trying to escape the encroaching Dark. They manage to find their way to the exit of the bunker, with Noelle and Asriel out there waiting for them. But as they think they're free, the Dark catches up. It threatens to engulf the lagging Kris, so Dess makes a dangerous decision. She pulls the child forward and pushes them forward with such force that their horn headband falls off. The kids all watch in horror as the headband disappears into the Dark, along with Dess herself.

What else could some terrified kids do at this time but go get their parents for help? In their panic, they wind up getting the whole town involved in checking on what happened. The mayor, Dess' mother Carol Holiday, gets together a force to go into the Dark tunnels and find her daughter. This force is lead by Asgore, the police chief, and includes some other parents, particularly Catti's father. They go into the unknown in search for the missing girl. Only to emerge later unsuccessfully and damaged. Catti's father lost an arm somehow within whatever is in there. This eminant danger forces Carol to make a drastic choice, continue this dangerous search for her girl, or give up on her entirely. And she ultimately chooses the later. She orders the bunker closed and locked. Asgore is in shambles after his failure to save the daughter of his best friend, Mayor Holiday is stuck with the grief of choosing her town over her daughter, and Kris is traumatized that all this felt like their fault.
Time goes on though. Asgore eventually loses his job at the force, either from Carol firing him over her sorrow or just because he couldn't handle the position anymore in his broken state. Others come to accept that December Holiday is gone, but Noelle still believes her sister is out there and looks for her in her own ways. And it seems something has been trying to reach out to her as well. Something tied to her video games, appearing in many bits of her blog she started some time later. Meanwhile, Kris becomes torn, but still tries to console Noelle as they can. Asriel remains as a force of unity, keeping everything together, shouldering all the problems that may come the way of the children.
And years later, Asriel leaves for college, untethering Kris from the only think keeping them together.

Part 3 - Playing in the Dark:
After Asriel leaves for college, Kris becomes more and more unhinged. They start being even more silent and to themselves. Put simply, they're depressed. Some things still give them happiness like playing the piano for the hospital patients, but things are wearing them down. They find themselves in the school closet one day, and just playing around with one of their knives. Maybe they did it out of just boredom, desperation, anger or because they felt something calling to them, but they stabbed the knife into the ground, causing a vein of Dark that had been dormant under the city for so long to spring up. This Dark Fountain filled the closet and took Kris to another world. One empty and cold, but inviting to them for some reason. And while in this dreamlike world, they find something astonishing: a goat monster that looks a lot like Asriel named Ralsei.
Ralsei explains to them that they're in the Dark World, a land where their imaginations become real. Ralsei is one such imagination, specifically they are the headband that Kris lost all those years ago, taking the form that Kris envisioned while wearing them: that of a perfect second child to the Dreemurr family, just like Asriel. Basically Ralsei is Kris' monstersona brought to life by the Dark. It turns out the Dark is connected to the power of imagination and can bring things to life based on how people percieved them. He's a special case as he can reach out from the depths of the Dark Fountain to Kris (this is how he reaches the other Dark Worlds throughout the game). And he's not alone. Ralsei explains to Kris that there's more, Dess is down there with Ralsei in the source of the Dark. She's been stuck down there, singing out for someone to find her so loudly that it can even be heard on the bottom of the lake. She sings "Don't Forget" once more, but this time as a plea for help, calling for anyone to remember that she's down there

But she can't get out the same way Ralsei can since she's a Lightner. But they have a plan, to use the past game they played, the Legend of the Deltarune, to throw off the balance in the world and lead to Dess, the Angel, getting out. To do that, they need Kris to play along the story of the game. They have to open and close Dark Fountains as the story is meant to play out, and that will eventually get them to the end point they desire. How Ralsei knows about this isn't clear, but the main point is: Kris can save Dess. They just has to become her KNIGHT in shining armor.
Going to take a moment to break from the storytelling here for a bit. This part of the story is very much the most "BS" part of it. There's a lot of bits that make the previous points fit in, but things are hazy in this section. Why DOES Ralsei seem to know things will be fine if they go this way? Is Kris really the Knight? Why would they need to open and close the fountains? All very valid questions that I don't have really clear answers for like other parts.
The main points I'm trying to put together in this section are:
1. Ralsei seems to know the plot of the story and is intent on getting the story to it's endpoint. Even getting upset when the story seems to deviate in Weird Route.
2. Kris has opened at least 1 Dark World on screen. This could just be a misdirect that'll be cleared up next chapter or it could have been meant to reveal that they're the one opening all the Fountains
3. Kris was in the closet Dark World before as clear from their save file existing there from the start.
4. All this leads to a situation where Kris seems to want things to go on with this story but the Kris we're controlling in game seems to still react to the story as if they don't know what's really coming next
So basically the main point is Ralsei at least knows way more than he lets on, and Kris is playing along in some regard. The specifics of their deal isn't clear at all, but that's the gist
Got two questions,
Why would Dess sing a song? Why would she encourage Kris to explore down there?

But this now leads into another uncertain factor: whether Kris wants to follow this story or not. Is the Kris when they rip out their SOUL them themselves, or is it the influence of the Dark/the Knight as some kind of third force making them continue the path? Both seem to have merits here. The birdcage existing prior to the game start could imply that they were ripping out their SOUL before (You) showed up in the story, or it could be they had it with the intent that they knew (You) were coming. Personally, I lean towards the "third entity" theory, that Kris didn't want to do any of this and the Dark was forcing them to act out. Their body stirred to action while their SOUL doesn't agree. As such, I'm going to continue this story with that idea in mind. I do still think Ralsei told Kris all this in some degree though given the interludes where we watch Susie cutting back to Ralsei assuring Kris of things behind our back. So now back to the narrative.
Kris isn't on board with this plan, as it clearly takes things too far. But something won't let them go. Be it some desire deep inside to become that hero or some influence from the Dark itself, Kris' body wants to act while their SOUL doesn't. This leads to a severing of persona, their body finding the strength to rip the SOUL from it to continue it's duty as the Knight against Kris' will. Kris, powerless to stop this force, starts to spiral into more and more issues. The Knight is a raw ID, it doesn't have any of Kris' compassion, just their DETERMINATION to succeed in this quest and get what it wants. It even sets up spaces to hold the SOUL in place while it acts out it's desires. It first opens a Dark Fountain in the kid's room next to the closet, setting things up for the story to start if it can bring a monster into the closet. Kris, left helpless, looks into a drastic solution.

They always had an interest in the occult, and specifically looked up how to summon a demon. Perhaps if they couldn't stop themselves, something stronger could. So Kris reached out into the ether. And they found a connection... to (You), the player.
Part 4 - Your Choices Don't Matter:
And so we now finally reach the point of the start of the game. (You) are brought in and gain control of Kris' SOUL. You're not replacing it or anything like that, Kris still clearly has a personality and emotional reactions separated from our will being imposed upon them. More that we're now tethered to their SOUL and able to guide them through the dangerous paths they have to take. Whether this was something intended in the grand plan of "the story" Dess, the Dark and Ralsei are following isn't clear. You're told many times that your choices don't matter, though even beyond Weird Route we are able to change subtle things about the story. It is more likely that the plot is set to continue no matter how we interact and change minor things. It will all lead to the end where Dess will find her way out.
It starts with sealing the kid's classroom. That night, the Knight forces the SOUL out and goes on an all night binge. It eats the whole pie Toriel left, sneaks out, terrifies the local thief dogs that were going to rob Noelle's house nextdoor, and goes to the computer lab to open a Fountain before returning home. This leads into the events of Chapter 2. While we're at school, Noelle and Berdley find themselves entering a strangely dark Computer Lab the same way Kris and Susie did in Chapter 1 with the closet. In the Chapter 2 Dark World, Noelle's presence causes references to Dess and the past to resurface, but ultimately it's all just another step in the game and the fountain must be closed. Leading us to the end of Chapter 2 as the Knight/SOULless Kris opens another Fountain after slashing Toriel's tires to get her to call in some police.

See this could've made sense but Ralsei is implied to have been created very recently before the start of the game. He considers a day a long amount of time, so it's impossible that he waited alone for years before Kris and Susie fell into the supply closet.

Now we enter pure speculation territory on where the plot is going to go.
We'll continue through the path set by the Knight and the story as a whole. This will first have us go through Kris' house and reveal more of their personal issues caused by Dess' disappearance and Kris' disconnect with their family. Then we'll get to the Church Dark World dealing with how the town as a whole has reacted to the darkness (figurative and literal) lurking beneath the surface. We'll also get to know more about the real religion that the kids' game was based on.
After that point, I think the biggest thing to happen to progress the plot will be a Dark World in either Noelle's house or the Mayor's Office. One way or another, we're going to be confronting Mayor Holiday in a Dark World so The Knight/Kris can get their hand on the key to the bunker. The ultimate goal is to free Dess (and the Dark at the same time), so the force of the story has to get that key in Kris' hand. Guiding us to the ultimate resolution as the bunker will be opened and the Dark will spill forth to take the entire city: "unleashing the Angel's Heaven". The final parts of the game will take place in a Dark World that encompasses the entire town and the area beneath. We'll have to navigate through the over and underworld as we make our way to where Dess is, at the source of the Dark.
At that point, we'll have to confront her. Dess will take the form of The Angel and act as the final boss, just like how Asriel did in Undertale. Whereas Asriel desired the destruction of the world just so he could feel something, Dess probably has become warped by her time in the Dark and simply wants to have everyone within it with her. Either way, you can bet we'll get a glorious remix of "Don't Forget" twisting this song one more time into "Her Theme". In the end, we're almost certainly going to seal the Dark away once more, but hopefully we can recover Dess, or at least what remains.

Given the time passage and how eating in The Dark doesn't seem to fill you, I wouldn't be surprised if the final twist is that Dess is long gone, only her dust remaining in the Dark, animated by it's power. But we have to get her out nonetheless so she can finally have her closure and see the light one last time. A sorrowful, but fitting end.
Part 6 - You will MAKE Your Choices Matter:
Unless, of course, (You) decide that story isn't good enough. I think Weird Route is the result of (You) trying to exert more control over the plotline. Each chapter we'll deviate the story ever so slightly with our machinations. Twisting the characters to follow along with your design of the story till hopefully it can go off the rails. As you do this, something is clearly working to put a stop to it. A force that wants the story to play out even beyond the Dark we're overcoming.
I'm of course, talking about the absolute order of the world: the rules. Or should I say, Rouxls. I'm saying Rouxls Kaard is the thing. He's kind of an odd piece in the story. His insistence to continue to be part of things doesn't really make a lot of sense until we get to Weird Route where we find he's so conveniently frozen in front of the door to the shop with the good items. Oddly specific. And he's got some abilities other Lightners haven't shown like his teleporting and being able to set up elaborate games. Games that conveniently never actually impede our progress even if we fail them. He almost seems like he's just here to follow along the story unless we deviate from it. He's an anomaly. Y'know who else is an anomaly? The one that's apparently been contacting the super bosses and leading them to come to know the nature of the world: the one we all assume to be Gaster. I'm going to go out on a huge limb here and say Rouxls Kaard is actually W.D. Gaster.
Not to mention how he is completely different from other Darkners.
He's taking a minor role in this story just to keep things on track and he will ultimately be the real final boss of Weird Route. He'll throw everything he can at us to put a stop to how horribly we want to mangle the story being told. Who knows what'll happen when we surpass even him...
Ending:
And that's the general gist of it all. The Dark, a force being explored by Gaster, brings ideas to life literally as imagination becomes real. And Dess, center to this whole story, is stuck in the core of it making a story play out. That's the story of Deltarune that we're playing and it's one that we'll see to the end where Dess will finally find her way out of the Dark and into the light, for better or worse.
There. Finally got it all written out, even if it had to take like 20k words of pure autism.

Intent would be that the song is to calm down Kris who was scared after getting lost down there. She didn't want them to do it, they probably just did it cause they were a little shit even back then. Dess would just be the only one brave enough to go try and get him, then nice enough to sing to him to calm him down as they tried to find the way back out.
Where was he implied to have been created recently? It could simply be a lie, or the whole events that started off the story before (You) got called in are on a shorter scale (like the headband was dormant till it woke up from the first Fountain being opened).
He is and he isn't. He doesn't follow the general rules for moving between fountains since he doesn't turn to stone, but he also clearly turns into a plie of nothing when he goes down in the fights while Susie, Noelle and Kris remain physical. That's why I'm thinking he's a special Darkner coming from the source rather than an object in the area itself.
Not that I neccesarily think its the truth, but you can also argue that Ralsei is completely meta aware and him saying it's felt like years is in reference to the actual time between chapter 1 and chapter 2 releasing. He is also the only other darkner aware that they're all objects, what objects they are, where they are in the light world, and the layout of the light world (the school bare minimum)
I'll say this, you explained your reason for believing the Kris Knight theory in a way that's actually thematically convincing, and not just stringing together a bunch of "evidence"(there barely is any) to form a "logical" deduction.

I guess that's possible but I think Ralsei isn't a typical darkner, he's maybe a secret third thing that isn't tied to a specific object.

What does the Dark do if not make the game function. It also seemed to be able to reach out to Noelle's video games going by her game blog posts. Words from Dess existing in the deeper code could just be a side effect of her being so deep in the Dark here.

I enjoyed the schizo theory anon. I don't think Rouxls is the secret big bad (or Gaster), but you bring up some decent points. The whole backstory of what happened in the bunker is probably spot-on with the actual lore though. It was definitely a proto-dark world that Dess got stuck in.
