Older games couldn't show you the world because of hardware limitations, so your brain would have to fill in the gaps. The world could be limited by only your imagination. Modern games are so realistic there's no room for that; they show you the full monster.

An intel xeon E5-2670 would have been a beast for its time in 2012, but it now gets worse performance than any modern i3 while consuming 1/10 of the power.
Old games are the same, there are exceptions but pokemon isn't one, there's no story that would age well, it's a game for children, there's no good gameplay, it's the most rudimentary form of turn based fighting with no nuance or special quirks that would even put it on the same level as megami games.
The soundtrack is good and the art was fine on a microscopic handheld when they came out.

This isn't some contrarian or sheltered thing, I'd seen most 'big' movies, this was just one of the most notable ones that had escaped my view my whole life through sheer coincidence. It popped up somewhere, probably for the millionth time because everybody's heard of Back to the Future, and I finally said 'I've never actually sat down and watched this, let's give it a try'

The point I'm making here is I don't have some deep-seated nostalgia, some fond memories of being a carefree child and Back to the Future defining my life. I can't particularly recall Michael J Fox from anything except being a sad cripple, and Christopher Lloyd to me was just that great supporting actor in Addams Family.

The magic was real. I was enthralled by the whole fucking thing, and I immediately grabbed the second and third as well. What they did, what all the old classic blockbusters did was so ineffable and impossible to reproduce; they weren't soul-searching high art but every moment of them was just a well-oiled machine interfaced to "click" with the human psyche.

The 2D sprites and visuals are easier to abstract and let your imagination fill in the gaps, the 3D animations and models just look ugly and incomplete. Both are not how Pokemon would actually battle if we compare the game's battles to stuff like the anime or stadium/colosseum but we can easily realise that when it's just 2D sprites, the 3D models seem lazy and unfullfilling. Pokemon is a series that can only work if you do A LOT of mental filling between what's supposed to be happening on screen and what the screen is actually showing, it's no difderent than playing with toy cars. No wonder older pokemon players tend to see their mons more as stat numbers, IVs and so on because in truth that's all they really are to someone without a youthful gaze.

The battle screen on the left is an ABSTRACTION. You are supposed to imagine the battle. It's an abstract representation of what the real battle would look like, just like in most JRPGs.

The battle screen on the right is too 3D, too realistic, leaves nothing to the imagination and DOES NOT WORK as an abstraction. The pokemon are REALLY THERE, two feet away from each other, repeating their lame idle animations over and over again. 3D does NOT work as an abstraction. So instead of asking you to imagine the awesome things it represents, it's doing the imagining for you and showing you a really lame, sterile, lifeless "battle".

The gen 4 remakes of Gold and Silver are also fantastic and very much worth playing if you ever feel like playing more gen 2 at some point.
