The death ring feels out of place in this game. It gives the game a serious, competitive feel. This is on top of the fact that the game does very little in the way of explaining what the optimal routes and builds are, even though you wouldn't think the game has those, but it does since the entire thing is piggybacking off an RPG, but unlike an RPG, there are no ways of making the game easier on yourself. Despite Dark Souls have a "git gud" reputation, you actually don't need to in order to beat any of From's games. Instead, you can use summons, co-op and grind trash mobs to outman or outlevel tough fights. But in this game, you don't have those options. The difficulty is set and you have no way around it other than to literally "git gud," for once.

And this feels out of place in a co-op PvE game. People like co-op games without PvP because they don't care about e-peen or leaderboards, but instead just want to hang out with others and have what most would consider a casual gaming session: exploring, chatting, dicking around. But this game is terrible for that. It's structured like some kind of e-sports and that's only going to make players hate each other because this or that guy "ruined my run." There is no time for exploring, no time for dicking around, no time for even reading what weapons do in Nightreign, because everyone's running in fear of the circle, which severely punishes the player for "playing wrong."

The circle itself operates in a strange way, as well. It just sits there until a certain amount of time passes (which is invisible to players) and then it hurries across the field before stopping again. This is counterintuitive and leads players to ignore the rain until they realize it's suddenly rushing upon them, only to realize they're underground or at the bottom of a ravine or something; they have no choice but to lose a level and all their runes. This discourages exploration and rewards players for grinding and memorizing the map (in a roguelike?).

It's mostly just that you really need to learn how to route and prioritize and manage your time. It's definitely not what you would expect from Elden Ring and runs are incredibly hectic (I can only do a couple of runs in a row because 40 minutes of non-stop intensity and time pressure is mentally exhausting). But it's fun. And it definitely rewards knowledge of systems and planning. Stuff like making a set route to get to something you want and clearing everything on the way because you know it won't take long. Setting time aside so you can do the legacy dungeon in the center. Prioritizing camps that give weapons the Nightlord is weak to. Going after churches and routing to evergaols when you get keys.

There's a lot of strategy and it feels overwhelming at first, which I think is why a lot of people get daunted. But once you get the flow of it and are playing with other people that ALSO get the flow of it, it's actually really fun. You also really don't need any further communication tools. Just being able to ping a location and have your homies confirm is all you need. Assuming that the three of you are white or Asian and are thus able to form a morphogenetic bond.

I don't see why a PvE game should be concerned with this, but if the idea is players should only be able to extract "so much" from the map before fighting a boss, then I feel like there's better ways of going about it. I'm imagining a game that takes place inside a building where the direction players choose to go causes other routes' doors to lock or perhaps underground where rockslides make the previous areas inaccessible. In an outdoor area, you could achieve this by having areas sink into the ocean or become overcome with some kind of rot or lava. You could even keep the death ring, just don't have it be a literal ring, have the storm follow whatever path the players didn't. I feel like that makes more sense than a literal ring that shows up out of nowhere to kill you for trying to play the game.

I get that. My friends and I back in the day played Dynasty Warriors that way. The difference is Dynasty Warriors is a casual as fuck game, where you just sit back and clear hordes of peasants. This game lights a fire under your ass and judges you for not playing a certain way - a way you just have to learn through trial and error and pissing other players off. All that work and effort results in what is still ultimately just a PvE game. Typically games punish you like this in PvP games, since the reward for winning is feeling superior to others. You don't have that here. The only reward is not making people angry at you.

And like you said, you eventually figure out exactly where to go. I watched some of the guys who got early access for the hunt event thing play and they already sounded bored of the game because they knew literally everything. Doesn't that sound really bad for a game that's allegedly supposed to be kind of a rogue-like? Games like that are supposed to be a "play it by ear" kind of situation, but here they already knew exactly what to do. They always hit max level, had legendary weapons, etc. It's cool and all to feel like you "beat the game," but is this supposed to be a game you "beat"? Maybe I just had a different impression. People talked about this game being something people will still throw on 6 months again to "get some Nightreign in," but it doesn't look that way anymore. Now it looks more like Portal 2's co-op mode.

It's less that and more so that matches don't take fucking forever. If you don't have any way of forcing confrontation, most players won't ever engage because that has risk to it. Other MP games avoid that by just having a map so small you can't hide away, or having respawns so you don't have the notion of "well I died, now I get to do NOTHING until the round ends"

What exactly does holy damage do to the dog? I had a holy treespear and I noticed when he was split up it gave a guaranteed stun on the first two hits and made the individual dog glow but I couldn't really tell what the glow was doing, they still seemed to move the same and deal a ton of damage.
