Too much focus on resource management.

the encounters weren't hard enough, they needed to add way more demons to ultra nightmare. The game is so fucking fun but the encounters are too weak.

Additionally, they need to remove the gay puzzle bosses. What the fuck is the point of those?

Other than that, it's a stellar game.

It’s not fun. The gameplay loop is incredibly restricted, repetitive and boring once you master it. Quick swapping between ballista and SSG to shit out DPS isn’t fun or interesting gameplay.

Perfectly said. They had so many awesome ideas but it was just too much. Fun game for sure but by the end it felt like you were constantly spinning 10 plates simultaneously. Maybe I'm just getting old but after a level I had to take a break because the game is exhausting.

I really like both of the games for their own strengths. I loved how the environments looked in 2016, and the demons seemed more serious in that game

Disagree. 16 had just the perfect amount of combat mechanics and resource management without draining you mentally. The insinstance of having to deal with demons' weakpoints with specific weapons and weapon mods took away from the fun of just scooting about and blasting shit.

Either I'm getting old or this game's just too fast. It's not even the gamespeed, it's most that demons now shoot projectives at quadruple the rate they did in 16 and now everyone is always constantly up your ass. You get swarmed immediately and the battlefield becomes too frantic to enjoy for me.

I tried playing Eternal again and I completely agree with all your points. Playing eternal is a chore. I remember when Doom 2016 released, used to play it even after work and it was always fun. But playing Eternal is exhausting. This is an inventory management game disguised as an arcade. Constantly running out of ammo and health then chainsawing, glory killing and flaming enemies to get health, ammo and shield every 15 seconds is not fun at all. Tried eternal for 5 hours and dropped it, reinstalled and tried again but uninstalled after 1 hour. I’m hoping that Dark Ages is not like eternal and is truly a fun Arcade shooter.

Nta but Marauders? You have such a short windows to deal damage after the green flash thing, you pretty much have to or you'll be stuck fighting the Marauder for 2-3 minutes at a time, which completely breaks the flow of combat. Even the blood punch didn't help much against them. Honestly my most hated enemy in the game. I almost ragequit when they made you fight 2 at the same time and they're constantly buffed by those screechers. Horrible horrible design imho.

Spastic in all the wrong ways for a doom game. Constant swapping breaks the flow of the game and the slowmo for the weapon wheel makes it even worse.

This. The game is mostly good but the game wants you to cycle through and use X to solve X problem every time. All the resources are design exactly for the cycle. Which isn't fun, you can't pick a worse weapon and be clever.

The story emphasis is also trash but it's mostly wasted resources since you don't play Doom for the story.

Chaingun shield prevents the curse effect, but you can also tag them with ballista for a Glory Kill or hook and shoot with the SSG for an instant kill, they're glass cannons like regular Prowlers.

They could've dropped the whole flame belch mechanic, I barely used it anyway and finished the game by basically ignoring it but it's just one less keybind that's off your mind.

And I'm not a fan of the chainsaw not being a weapon but just another glory kill button that gives you a slight ammo refill. But I guess that wouldn't feed into the resource management loop where everything needs to have exactly one mechanical purpose only.

I've played through it and both DLC missions. It got a lot more enjoyable once you learn about weapon combos (SSG+Blood Punch+Grenades etc) but even then like you said, it's just a chore. The game is so up its own ass with its mechanics that it forgets to just let you have fun shooting shit, which is a shame because the gunplay feels great.

Flame Belch is literally the best thing ever. Don't like to rely on Glory Kills to keep yourself topped up? Literally just Belch all the time. The way it powers up your Blood Punch after the upgrade is kino. Lets you punch a group of enemies 3-4 times in a row.

The story was the definition of trying too hard. 16 was fun because it just there to set the scene and flavour the slayer as this mythological demon killer. Now everything has to be hyper explained and given a stupid background story, leaving nothing to the imagination. There's no more mystery, just boring lore spelling out everything. Hell and all the evil shit out there is a lot more interesting and menacing when you don't know every little goddamn detail of their inner workings and origins but we seem to be catering to a growing crowd of people who need to have absolutely everything explained to them no matter how minute.

The game took out all the speed so it could add it back as a short dash with a cool down; really, the game is actually slower than 2016, much less the OG. They took inspiration from MOBAs and MMOs and put all your abilities and resources on cooldowns. They added too much lower. They gave skippable cutscenes, but then they made unskippable "Hey! Look at that fucking door that unlocked for 5 seconds in this arena with exactly 1 entrance and 1 exit!" and then the whole game is boring linear hallways punctuated by constant arenas; it makes 2016 level design look labyrinthine, and is distinctly not true to the originals. It completely abandoned what little seriousness, darkness, and sincerity the series had for Marvel quips, spectacle, and overwrought "lore" because the writers actually thought they have some kind of talent or skill.

About the only thing the game did well was construct an engine that can run well even on a potato, which is the only thing true to the originals.

And worst part is, this is going to be the new flavour of Doom going forwards. We'll never get another classic shoot 'em up Doom, it's just gonna be hyper frantic arena shooter from now on.

Which is a shame because again, the shield and flail and shit they showed off in the Dark Ages trailer look really damn cool, but I'm not interested in the slightest because I know what awful gameplay it comes with.

They leaned on a flawed game concept that didn't work for most people on the first game, but now this second one brought extremely difficult mobs that took too long to kill and frustrated most people playing the game.
Now with the new dark ages, they had the galls to make the game even slower and now it's basically a pixel perfect parry simulator instead of a supposedly shooter game.

Am I missing or did they patch it or something? I saw a guy on youtube do it and he basically perma-stunned them with nothing but an SSG.

The only changes they've made is making him ignore projectiles thrown behind his shield, and making a visual indicator for when he's stunned.

You need to time frag grenades right to extend their stuns.

If they combined the slower paced combat system from Doom 16 with the level, weapon and enemy design (minus the weakpoint system) and got rid of the stupid story, it'd be a 10/10 for me.
The last mission of the DLC where you assault the hell world's city and there's this huge war going on is incredibly kino - until they throw you in with two buffed marauders. Completely took the fun out of everything.

Like with Eternal I think they have some fucking amazing ideas (the grappling hook on the super shotty etc) and once again the level and monster design looks great but if it's just more spastic resource management arena shooting I can't get excited about it unfortunately.
I just wish they'd make Brutal Doom but in the 16/Eternal engine.

Wanna talk wasted resources? How about the damage system? Look, demons losing part of their bodies as they get beaten up is awesome but it's kinda lost in a game where you're expected to kill them extremely fast (with the right weapons). And even on bullet spongy enemies with a lot of HP the frantic combat and movement makes it basically impossible to appreciate their physical degradation anyway.

This is sort of what I am talking about when I complain about dadgamers or those who just want to veg out on the couch being upset a game actually requires some investment. To me, Doom Eternal was so good that it restored my hope that games could still advance forward in this modern shit industry. Problem is then the game expects you to quickswap between 5 different guns to get a single shot off with each so you can pump in as much damage as possible in that tiny ass timeframe before he recovers and you're doing the same annoying song and dance for the next 5 minutes.

The issue is that people wanted a more classic doom game. Instead they doubled down on Doom 16's fast paced arena fights and resource management and dialed it up to 11.
