wind waker is the worst zelda game

at least its a zelda game

unlike what?

you tell me

The triforce hunt was cool. Only retard babies ever complained about it

Wind Waker is actually a good game guys, Cel Shaded Link is soul

Gets outsold by Twilight Princess

great meme, 2000s.

TotK and BotW

This is the kind of game that I could really only love as a kid with unlimited patience, imagination, and time.

It got outsold by twilight princess because wind waker was on a flop console and twilight princess was a launch game for the wii.

windwaker outsold tp and botw on wiiu though, showing with hindsight WW is actually the better choice

alttp got ousold by every 3d zelda game

Wii u port fixed that

FPBP

Wii U

not exactly the console to measure metrics of popularity now.

Here are the steps
1. Go to a location on the triforce map and get the location map for a piece
2. Explore other islands until you have enough money to have the map translated
3. Travel to the triforce piece and pull it up
Taken together, these systems had the player doing both directed and free form exploration and treasure hunting, which is the point of the fucking game

i love korok slop

it's not because skyward sword exists but it's definitely in the bottom tier and its fans are also the biggest faggots ever

*Tears of the Wild

you have to free roam the damn game in order to complete wind waker

older zeldas you can just B-line it straight to each dungeon instead of faffing with side areas

Look i'm fine with looking for the pieces of the triforce but the rupee grind is another matter and i think should have been handled differently. WiiU's approach fixes it some but i think not enough.

enjoy the 3 minutes of waiting time until you get to explore another island

hooray

SPLOO-OO-OO-OO-OO-OO-OOSH

It didn't need fixing. Free form exploration for rupees is a great idea. If there is a problem, it's that there isn't near enough variety in the non-mandatory islands. A game with a similar mechanic that works better because of higher variety in aays to accomplish it is four sword adventures, come to think of it.

i can, and i did, just bought the private oasis and grinded my rupees playing a slide puzzle. i just wanted to have the money to get the charts read to be done with the game.

ya the optional islands just need more to them. in the base game they're easy to ignore but even with randomizers making them mandatory the things you actually do in them is pretty shallow and uninteresting.

wind waker has the highest percentage of 'that part of the game' of any title

This. Not touching that shit.

tears of the kingdom would have been more fun if it had a triforce quest

the usual spergs can't stop themselves from dilating and leaking blood over botw and totk

funny thing is tww is literally a worse version of these new games, pretty much every game mechanic you find in them originate from tww

you need to pay a gay little man in order to access these korok rocks

yes yes, very fun.

No, that would be Skyward Sword.
But WW was definitely the first bad Zelda game.

what are you talking about?
go back to watching your gawr gura stream

replayan banjo kazooie

get to clanker's cavern

all me btw

paying a little gay man to access content IS the essence of the triforce quest.

with botw and totk "that part" is so much of the game that people will say "that part for the one thing they liked about it.

tww is literally a worse version of these new games

More like an unfinished prototype.

WW didn't have ktem durability or dogshit writing

yes, Zelda peaked at twilight princess and gone downhill from that point.

dogshit writing

WAOW GANONDORF IS... LE SAD???? BIG NIGGER MAN ISNT SO EVIL AFTERALL RELLY MAKE U THINK!!!!

lmao

I'm sure that there are worse examples. Maybe Tales of Symphonia?
With that said I love that game.

Yeah, you tell him. He didn't even grow epic horns on his head. That was so coooool.

If Skyward Sword didn't happen, King Daphnes would have been the worst character in the entire series.

The game doesn't say that about Ganondorf. You are acting superior, but you have the same intelligence as the average WWfag.

Wind Waker and Four Swords Adventures were the only two good Zelda games. They actually present coherent, consistently well-paced experiences, rather than the occasional highlight mired down by monotonous travel between highlighted points on generic unthreatening maps.

Sailing had its issues, but at least it wasn't slowly traveling through the most generic fantasy grasslands over and over and over. Zelda was a foundational contributor to the proliferation of open-world slop.

reddit spacing

This was the only part of the game I really liked because I was actually exploring the world and finding shit at my own pace and leisure, which is what I primarily played Zelda games for and enjoyed about them until that point, as the games would keep getting worse about that as they went on. (Though I forget if Twilight Princess eased up sooner than Wind Waker did since I haven't touched that game since my first playthrough, but Wind Waker won't let you go anywhere but where the game tells you to until all the way to getting Nayru's Pearl, which is roughly the fucking halfway point of the game.)

Anytime I ever thought about replaying Wind Waker, my fond memories to revisit happen to be a lot of the stuff involving the Triforce pieces, but damn near everything leading up to it feels like a "that part" I'd have to get through to reach the "fun stuff."

Blows my mind that the only part of the game I'd want to revisit is only in the game because they rushed it and couldn't put more linear dungeon progression in its place.

A Let Go.jpg - 960x960, 36.58K

But LTTP is the best zelda game (and the best video game)

For

For me it's all of Majora's Mask.

I recommend BetterWW. It's the WW randomizer's QOL stuff without the actual randomizer, leaving the plot/items/etc mostly intact.

I like the Triforce Hunt.
Ask me anything.

How much brain damage are you suffering from?

She's the only reason I kept playing her game.

coherent, consistently well-paced experiences

"well-paced" is a joke when talking about tww, the game is full of filler and makes you waste your time constantly because it doesn't have enough content for its size due to compromises made during development

like they literally make you go across the map to go bomb a wall and fetch a pearl instead of making you explore an island and the dungeon associated with it to conclude the first half lmao

Hold triangle to go up, and circle to go down!

Dear god why.

For some reason every time I replay MM I always forget like 70% of the game. And yet I can beat OOT with my eyes closed at this point.
Also Malon best girl.

None. I had an MRI recently and I'm perfectly fine.

breath of the wild i thought had a good progression curve. the only part i really disliked was the stealth section of the ninja hideout as it sorta broke its rule about letting the player figure shit out

It's not that EXPLORING = BAD.

It would have been objectively better if they got rid of the maps and just put the shards where you found the maps. Grinding for rupees and going back and forth to the same areas is not fun.

Wind waker was Nintendo finally ending their fraudulent game design and instead making something coherent. WW looks and is a game for children, and it's wonderful for it. Then they release TP and it's somehow even easier than WW which clashes with the aestetic and just makes it a shitty game.

Yeah me too but I play OoT almost daily, that and MM feels so god damn clunky in comparison. There's also the tedium of MM. I love MM but I don't enjoy replaying it.

How did you tackle it?
I recently replayed WW and found that the Triforce quest was just about the best part of the game, but I opted to pick up charts and pieces between dungeons instead of putting it off.

The royal family pulling a samson option really never sat well with me

I usually do everything I can do before I move on to the next dungeon, within reason of course. Things like the reefs are usually done in the late game.

It's the good part on theory but they fucked up the timing and execution really badly.

Looking it up, it seems like it just speeds parts of the game up a little but doesn't do much to alleviate one unfortunate factor that is how little you can actually do off the guided path without being fully kitted with all the dungeon items or even just needing the story progressed to the triforce hunt anyways, so I doubt this patch would really help much either.

Were any of the Wind/Earth dungeon items needed for the Triforce pieces? I can't remember.

It's definitely the worst in its class due to being as rushed as it is, but I'd still put it above Four Swords Adventures for practicality purposes. Nintendo wanted people to spend far too much money on extra hardware just sp that game, while decent, could merely be played as intended.

hookshot to get the ghost ship chart

he didn't have a GBA and a cable

lol
lmao

It's heartening to see other people who share my love for the Triforce Hunt in WW. I do indeed find it the peak of that particular game, and one of the best parts of any Zelda game. There's a good lack of direction in it which encourages a deep dive into plundering the world for its secrets, and putting all those rupees you've been finding to use finally. It made me feel like a real treasure hunter rather than being guided from setpiece to setpiece.

Grinding for rupees

Don't. Explore for them. What do you think all the treasure maps are for

IIRC there's two behind the Hookshot.
I forget if the Mirror Shield is needed for any, but the Power Bracelets also lead to at least two. Not behind the Earth Temple in this case, but you still need to reach the second half of the game to get them since the fire/ice arrows are locked behind finishing the second trip to the Forsaken Fortress.

My zoomer mind is so poisoned by dopamine hits from TikTok and Youtube that I can't stand having to wait a WHOLE 3 MINUTES!

Our generation is so doomed.

The game fucking throws money at you, you don't even need to do treasure charts for rupees. Most of the Triforce chart rooms have pots that are absolutely filled with rupees in them.

you VILL do nothing and you VILL be happy

Nice try, corpo.

I have one of each. You need 3 of each to play it as intended.

there are only 2 islands in the game that you need to travel once between them

While we're critiquing Wind Waker, another nitpick I want to bring up is the Wind and Earth Temples needing to be done in order. I spent years thinking you could do either one of the two first since there's no logical reason for why it should be otherwise, but on another playthrough I went to find Makar to start the Wind Temple stuff, only to not find him absolutely anywhere on Forest Haven, and he just doesn't even exist in his little hideout at all until you go and finish the Earth Temple and now he's suddenly back for you to talk to. Why?

Yep, there are 2 that take the hookshot. For anyone wondering how early you can get all the triforce pieces, they're gated like this:

Bird's Peak Rock: Hyoi Pear
Golden Warship, Isle of Steel: Bombs (though, you can slip through without bombs if you goad the cannons into shooting the ships for you.)
Private Oasis: Skull Hammer
Stone Watcher Island, Savage Labyrinth: Power Bracelets
Overlook Island, Ghost Ship: Hookshot

I thought Daphnes' "I'm letting the future decide its own path" shit at the end was fucking hilarious given he absolutely did not feel that way at any point leading up to it.

railroads link for half the game

paints a massive target on tetra's back by turning her into zelda and then leaving the newly restored triforce of wisdom with her

destroys hyrule because of his personal feelings when he wasn't sure if there even was a new land out there

I like to think Link and Tetra later realized how full of shit he was and named their kingdom New Hyrule just to spite him.

The Triforce hunt is an interesting case study in poor execution. It's not because it's a bad idea - it's actually the best idea WW has. Nintendo just did it wrong. For starters, the entire first half of the game has you on a leash - KoRL won't let you be curious until after the Endless Night is done. By then, players are pretty much conditioned to beeline to the next objective because it's all they've been allowed to do, even though you can start trying to do Triforce stuff once that part is over.

Second, the game doesn't really make a stink of it until after you've beaten every dungeon, which may be well enough considering how annoying item gating is with individual items. That's another way the natural pacing of the game discourages exploration even though KoRL has fucked off. Lastly, Tingle's rupee gating. There's no reason for it to be there and it adds tedium to a quest if you set it off to the end, like most players will naturally do on their first playthrough for the previous two reasons.

All of this resulted in a very good idea being hated by most because it was handled and conveyed to players about as poorly as could be managed. HD cleans up enough of the mess to where it's more playable, but the original implementation is maligned for good reason - Nintendo royally fucked it up.

I don't have a problem waiting!

I just have a problem waiting when I'm actually told to wait as a necessity of doing anything.

Grim.

Yep, that's forced by NPC gating for no good reason. One of the best parts of WW's main quest is being able to do the Fire and Ice islands in either order, and then put together the navigation to those two temples from there. Makar not showing up where he needs to be until you've done Earth Temple is the lamest shit.

I don't like any of WW's dungeons. The first two are too basic and everything else is handcuffed to the Command Melody, which is every bit as bad as the OoT Iron Boots were, if not more.

Unless you are precognizant and know to get both wallet upgrades immediately, you won't have access to the full 5000 cap. You'll either have 200 or 1000. And Tingle requires a total of about 4000. So all those rich rupee pots will likely go to waste. Anyway even ignoring the money issue, the maps are just an annoying step. Like going on the ghost pirate-ship or under the cabana is cool enough. I don't want to sail to Tingle Island and then to shitty dice coral reef #5 to get it. It's such a mood-killer.

if i wanted to wait a total of 150 minutes in a game to see its content i would play sonic 06 instead fr fr on god

Wallet upgrades fucking suck in general, why can't the game just let you have a max capacity of 5000 from the beginning?

You get the wallet upgrade locations pointed out to you when you free Tingle from prison.

yeah they're by far the worst dungeons of all the classic games

in fact content wise it's probably the worst zelda, sidequests, minigames, items, optional stuff it's all subpar, it's really entirely carried by its presentation

All of them are substandard except for Wind Temple, but that's offset by Makar being completely unfun to manage. Forbidden Woods is at least pretty and the second half of Tower of the Gods is functional, but Zelda dungeons on the whole hit a nadir with WW.

pen and paper

Tingle handles that for you.

I do appreciate the exploration aspect of it, but man, some of that shit really ain't good. Like boating to the same 3 islands to see if the Goron will give you a new piece of decoration and having to trial and error it.

Tower of the Gods is complete shit. Slow boat movement early on, slow statue movement later. I hate the Command Melody with a passion.

And yet it's still one of the better dungeons. Grim.

thank god for that, i would have forgotten without it

Slow boat movement early on

one flaw most people tend to forget is how shit traversal is thanks to the boat, probably the worst movement in any zelda

and of course overworld combat is another level of terrible entirely

Oh, I've long shit on KoRL for complicating what Epona solved years before the game came out.

Triforce Hunt is kino. Forces you to explore a lot of the world. Very fun.

I sort of liked this part in the original, but only because the earlier parts in the game were so flawed.

can’t go off the beaten path without the boat saying “You can’t! Go to the tree NOW!”

after master sword, can but the two dungeons don’t take that long to do so might as well get the mirror shield, elemental arrows, and hookshot before going further

and then the game gives you a big excuse to explore the whole map and actually feel like a sailor.

I’m play Twilight Princess after Wind Waker right now, and this game is so much more fun. Just beat the Lakebed Temple and saved Midna, I really like the game so far. These last 3 dungeons were better than any in Wind Waker’s though the bosses are a little worse, but everything outside the dungeons is a whole lot better too. I do think it’s funny that the Wind Waker’s story was about leaving Hyrule behind and finding a new one for the next generation, and then the next game is basically just the same Hyrule we all know and love, but I don’t really care because the game has lots of other stuff going for it.

Yeah, that's a problem. If the Triforce hunt was done well, you could try to begin solving it the moment you got a boat.

Good news, you're entering TP's best part. It's the rare game that peaks in the middle, for the next 4 dungeons or so it tightens its shit up considerably.

TP getting constantly shit on is sad, it's such a good game

sure it lacks originality but it's a far more consistent entry than both its predecessor and successor

I know this game is very long so I’m happy about that. I’m actually motivated to get the heart pieces and other collectibles too, which I didn’t fully do in Wind Waker.
I kept hearing claims that made the game sound sterile, but it just couldn’t be further from the truth. Link and Midna were very expressive alongside the minor characters who can have some wacky designs and the game has many silly moments alongside the serious ones. He still screams when getting shot out of a clown’s ramshack cannon and he shows signs of genuine weakness as well.

Wasn't the dude put in prison? Why would I trust him?

dilating and leaking blood

Ironic considering Link dresses like a woman in BOTW.

Would Breath of the Wind Waker work? I don't necessarily want it because I'm tired of non linear open world games, but the idea of free sailing without restrictions is titillating. You could have a number of large "main" islands similar to TWW, but these themselves are also massive (like plateau sized, if not lather), along with a smattering of middle sized and small islands.
Through in varied terrain and biomes. Islands situated with lagoons, archipelagos, cold islands in an arctic sea (with fully expoorable glaciers?), work in some subnautical zones as well. Could be very kino.

wind waker itself is a fucked up game with some good ideas that were ultimately, well, fucked up.

I unironically think the triforce hunt is a highlight of the game.

yeah it has a lot of personality, frankly the NPC cast is one of the strongest in the series with majora, lots of memorable characters

I think an ocean setting would fit the nu-Zelda formula way better than the ALTTP/OOT formula did.
The only issue is that the Zelda team would need to finally figure out how to properly execute the ocean overworld idea, and I'm not sure they could do that.

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I HAVE TO SAIL BETWEEN ISLANDS ON A WIDE OCEAN AND EXPLORE UNIQUE ISLANDS

NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO HELP ME AONUMA-SAN

Wasn't a good chunk of Breath/Tears world done by Monolith? I'm sure they'd do a decent job of it.

t. botw/tiktok enjoyer

I'd hate a tww style ocean for the next game

in fact I'd hate anything that resembles a past game, I want something entirely new if the next zelda is derivative again after the totk clusterfuck I'm going to lose all interest in the big 3D entries

You will play Breath of the Wild Threeie and you will like it.

I have a cracked wii u with the gamecube adapter, should I play the gamecube version on Nintendont or the HD remake?

don't talk to me you ugly faggot

Just play the wiiu version. The swift sail alone makes the game vastly more playable, and i think it always sticks the Wind Waker on the Dpad so you never have to have it wasting an item slot.

the best part? yeah, I also love it. :)

Gamecube version + BetterWW

It's not impossible that they'd pull it off, I just think it would be a massive undertaking to make it work. An ocean isn't like what BOTK has, you can't just walk across the entire map. Unless they try to make aerial navigation/the sky a thing for the third goddamn time, traversal around the overworld would be locked to ships, and at that point you're already right back to what got Wind Waker so much flak.
Monolith can only carry so much of the burden.

I'm just waiting for the BotW/TotK nonsense to be over and done with. I think a more freeform style of Zelda is a good idea but these games are like Legos - they give you the pieces and then you're supposed to fuck off and make your own fun. I'm ready for Zelda to feel like half a fuck was given about its main quest again.

Wind Waker is an adult game disguised as a children's game
Twilight Princess is a children's game disguised as an adult game

Why does this upset you so much?

I know you intended the space after 95 to be a metaphorical 0 but you should have just typed "950" anon

Wind Waker is an adult game disguised as a children's game

not with those puzzles and combat

I don't think I will.

Zelda games are invariably designed for children. Majora's Mask is probably the closest this series has ever gotten to actively acknowledging that someone has played a Zelda game before.

you should reconsider, it's actually a very good idea for you trust me

he doesn't like Clanker's Cavern

I explore the map anyways so I don't care about this.

i fricking dislike water levels gosh darn it

Hmm...no.

I played through Wind Waker for the first time on release when I was 9 and loved the Triforce hunt. Is Anon Babble just that casual?

oh wow, a retarded kid liking some retarded game design, why dont you try playing it again now that you have a thinking brain, maybe

Triforce Hunt was fine, Tingle is the problem. Fuck that little kike for unironically putting grinding in a Zelda game

Aonuma confirmed back in 2023 that the "open air formula" that BOTW and TOTK use is staying.

mmmmm doritos

wow that's surprising, you mean they're not abandoning a formula that sold in two games half of what the classic series did in 16 games because a handful of millenial spergs don't like it???

You are unnecessarily hostile.

Every nu-Zelda fan has a chip on their shoulder.

Found the casual.

That can stay, just design an actual game around it instead of a fuckhueg playground.

Zelda is as casual as core gaming gets aside from the NES entries and maybe Oracle of Ages.

you are a fragile little sissy!

zoras' rock band gimmick is gay and cringe

It's like everything here was designed to be as annoying and time consuming as possible. The only thing stopping me from dropping the game is remembering how fun Ikana is and that it's next.

As much as I love MM they really phoned in the regional changes in the back half of the game.

swamp is purified

spring returns to the mountains

basically nothing changes on the coast or in the canyon

The issue is that spazoids try to bumrush the main quest, meaning they didn't collect any charts along the way, so when they get to the point where it's required to progress, they feel like they have to do the whole quest all in one go.

The main problem is you aren’t able to get the wallet upgrades until you get Bombs and the Skull Hammer.

Great Bay was kino, fuck you. I'd like to go on vacation there.

FPBP
Sailing the Great Sea was fun

If only there weren’t so many Like-Likes to ruin the experience.

youre a zoomer that hasnt played zelda 2

Are you guys retarded? They're the most Zelda game of any Zelda game released in the last 30 years. Nothing else has felt like Zelda 1 or 2 in forever and you think that something NOT being a boring clone of OoT means its not a real Zelda game? Pathetic.

Look, I liked the Triforce hunt. The game is supposed to simulate a feeling of sailing, and having a real reason to look around the ocean almost blind was genuinely entertaining to me. When I hear people complain about it I just hear people wanting to rush the story/ don't like sailing.

Every time I think of replaying Banjo-Tooie, I remember this bitch.

I don't recall LoZ or AoL lacking meaningful progression.

It doesn't even take that long to get them, even on the OG.

sick of botw link and zelda
my eyes glaze over whenever I see fanart of them while browsing art sites or blogs.

Great Bay is my favorite part of MM, but I also love using Zora Link. Great Bay Temple is a top 5 3D dungeon.

Breath Link is petty cool. His design is nice and what semblance of personality that leaks through is cool. His androgynous body figure is off putting though.
Breath Zelda is awful by every metric. Bad design, bad outfits, awful voice, terrible simpering personality. She's just awful by every metric.

Zelda II is a solid action RPG that's only really marred by being a little too obtuse on occasion. I would still say it has the best magic system of any Zelda to date as well.

I like them but I really really hope they change the artstyle for the next game

one thing I used to like about zelda is how different mainline games used to look, this is also why I don't like tww they've used this artstyle far too much

ALBW was a better solution to that problem than BotW and even EoW is a better solution as well. I'd rather these games course correct than throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Oh No! I have to ADVENTURE in my ADVENTURE game? Ahhhhhh save me Linearman!

It was too little, too late. WW took way too damn long to get to where it should've started.

Those are different fairies. One of the wallet fairies only needs a deku leaf. The other is free

ALBW

Are you referring to renting items from Ravio until you’re able to buy them?

The rental system has its flaws, both up front and trickle down to the dungeon designs, but it was a way to decentralize how important item and story gating had become to Zelda while still being recognizably Zelda. The problem wasn't solved, but it was the best solution presented in about 15 years at the time.
