Thoughts??
Breath of Fire IV officially released on GoG
No Dragon Quarter, no buy.
Why purchase this over emulating
I demand a remake, just encouraging people not to emulate it is not enough. Fuck off Capcom, do better you fags.
GoG
purchase
Gonna look for it on F95 later. It's going to be easy to find it just filtering by NTR tag
Blurry sprites and filtered textures completely breaking the seamless aesthetic
Just emulate
Seems fine so far. The camera is super dogshit though.
You can mod it to not look blurry. It's more responsive than emulation as well thanks to running native.
I want Katt's game.
I don't care about it, GoG lost all credibility to me recently when it comes to game preservation
bottomless party members are pretty good
I demand a remake
Why? So they can replace the beautiful visuals with either ugly 3D models or ugly """HD 2D"""?
BoF3 is better. I think Steam has the Soundtracks available but not the actual games, which is weird as fuck.
I mean sweet but i rerererereplayed it last year already.
Pretty bad port. You're better off just emulating.
I still bought it.
I love Ursula so much it hurts.
OH NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
but anyway here sa banger
youtube.com
you buy in so Capcom notices and makes more.
they already made more. they were shitty phone games. Its dead.
Seems fine to me. Only thing that kinda blows is that you have to mod it to remove the blur
you cam fix the pixel smoothing easy: dragnier.net
Not the best port, but glad they did it.
looks like complete ass
doesn't have full controller support despite advertising it
It's shit.
big elephant in the room, but it it still censored?
BoFIV's GoG port is now the most recent release for the series, we're actually back.
What mods?
What happened?
It was all downhill as soon as they stopped letting you get Bleu as a party member.
the jp version included isn't, the english translation was never uncen'd, modders pls
WHY the fuck is every thrad about a game on GoG flooded with pirates
but
a thread about a game on Steam is not?
This smells fishy
but glad they did it
why?
Once you remove the blur it looks identical to the ps1 version
Better load times?
See
because I want more BoF and this is a good first step.
BoF 1 is the best of the underwhelming series so eh
lol
lmao
It's cute that you think they would
The wishlist actually worked, neat.
It's a great game and the peak of sprite art, why wouldn't someone be glad it got an updated port?
If I have to go out of my way to fix it then I might as well emulate.
not as cute as Katt
nukes and liquidators
western countries shitting themselves over a prospect of another war with not-china and betraying their own allies
god falling in love with a mortal and learning what a bad idea it is first-hand
can only punish the evil if you punish the entire world alongside it
Still one of the best stories in any JRPG
Did they uncensor the emperor decapitation or bathing scene? Or went and got a way for you to do the high tier lightning fusion spell that are otherwise unusable because Ryu can't get a specific water dragon form that Fou Lu gets?
Otherwise I ain't got a reason to buy it after replaying it recently, but I hope that others get it.
Who even gives a shit about Katt in the game with the best Nina design?
me too, which is why this sucks, no one's gonna buy it because it's half assed and everyone's still gonna point to the ps1 game
capcom is gonna see the 50 sales and won't even look at it again
why wouldn't someone be glad it got an updated port?
wtf do you mean updated? you need to go out of your way to mod it to make it not look like smudged trash
You're free to do so.
Personally I prefer games that run native.
Yohm is such a cool villain, funny little ball gentleman who's genuinely polite& respectful while trying to kill you.
I wonder, if there are any mods with gameplay fixes, making dragon forms easier to use and stronger in particular?
Ryu always felt like he's just "there" compared to 3's Ryu who was genuinely strong.
In this day and age it probably takes longer to download the emulator, setting it up, download the ISO than just getting the GoG version and a single mod though.
They updated the game so that you don't need to go through these steps anymore.
He perfectly understands that what he is doing is wrong, but he's duty-bound to the Emperor and is ready to go to Hell for it. And he proves it by immolating himself.
No dragon kino no buy
No you dont you fucking moron they updated the game to allow actual pixels now with their direct x wrapper, you just have to change its settings
In a way yes, because the Japanese Version is also available, so you'll just have to wait for the modders to translate it.
I really wanna play this one too, it's on my to-emulate list but if GoG can magic up a port that'd be fuckin' baller. Gloomy games on the Ps2 always had a real particular tone y'know
I can mod the game so it looks like the PS1 original? Anon, I...
Ok that's actually neat
you sure about that?
that intro
the original PlayStation native resolution being 320×240 (4:3). The minimum resolution for the game on PC is 640×480 (also 4:3), which is a 2X scale of the PS1 native resolution.
So you've got a forced 2x internal resolution at minimum so the edges of 3D objects will always been mismatched with the sprites So it's not actually fixed.
he fell for the "show support and the devs might make more" scheme
Poor little goyim.
yeah let me add game that was already on pc real quick and then boast that we totally preserve gaming!!!
That's not true at all.
Wanting nu-capcom to remake this
kek
"preserving gaming" largely just means having a legal outlet you can buy the game from and not have it require modding just to run.
you're actually a nigger woah
I wouldn't mind getting other games ported, but this Capcom. It's all chump change to them and absolutely not worth allocating that manpower that can work on Monster Hunter instead.
Why are seams such a huge fucking problem with Playstation emulation?
You never see issues like that out of the box with emulators for 4th gen consoles.
Hmm fishing.
he doesn't speed up
OH NO NO NO.
To be honest, I'm surprised that it's BoF4. I would've thought that BoF3 would be the one that would get released first. Then again, more people probably missed out on BoF4 so it's likely to sell more.
14k views on the video
It certainly is getting attention.
I demand a remake
Fuck that shit. I don't need them to smear grease all over the sprites, or uprez one portion while leaving the others pixelated, or trying some 2DHD garbage that Square loves to push out now. I'll take the original graphics and give the option to switch the graphics out rather than having them ruin everything and be stuck with a crappy remaster.
Why purchase this over emulating
You purchase if you want to see more, both from Capcom and in general. If this sells well, then other companies will notice and there's a better chance that this GOG Dreamlist puts more games onto GOG.
Also, you get the game files. There's no Steam client forcing you into an "updated" version if some future publisher wants that. You can download v.1.0 and keep the install files, just playing that for as long as you like.
It's only worth picking up if you actually want to play Breath of Fire 4, thou. No sense in spending money if you don't plan on playing it.
I fucking hate you people so much.
I want them to look at Dragon Quest's continued releases, BG3 and even Expedition 33 (all I know is that it's turn-based) then look at their library and see BoF dormant but still in the public consciousness, there's a pitch waiting to happen.
You know they would fuck up the visuals.
Frogs just sold a million copies of a JRPG, if Capcom is smart they outsource a Breath of Fire reboot immediately on a small budget
To be honest, I'm surprised that it's BoF4.
BoFIV was always more popular than BoFIII even though some people prefer the latter.
Funny they release this over 3. IIRC they have the same amount of votes in their stupid program.
Honestly, if GoG got Parasite Eve 1-2 on PC, I'd be more impressed than Capcom's shitty PC ports of that era being re-released.
ACTUALLY SHOW ME YOUR PRESERVATION EFFORTS, CD Project. Not "we'll do cherry picking of old PC ports and they'll still be bad but have modern controller support!"
That's wrong. 3 has been consistently more popular. 4 fans are just louder.
source: my anus
Does 3 have a pc port?
Love the visuals but I think I hate the combination of the camera system and the area design. The first town is such a clusterfuck to navigate because of the camera. One assumes that since they opted to use such a restricted camera system, they would at least had designed the areas in such a way it wouldn't be a problem.
BoF4 had a very limited release so most people were never able to play it. I seem to recall BoF3 getting more attention and popularity, but most people just couldn't play BoF4 to compare. These days, I think most people have switched over to BoF4, but I'm still surprised that Capcom didn't just try to release the earlier title first anyway.
At least they didn't put out BoF1 instead. That game would've turned everybody off.
These days, I think most people have switched over to BoF4
Nah.
the first town is like that to teach you to use the camera, it's an intentional environmental puzzle.
It still has the censorship present from the western PS1 versions (missing cutscenes). Also Scan wasn’t restored from the Japanese version. Pass.
bros... I love how Breath of Fire 4 looks
That's fair. It's probably still a better idea to releas BoF4 since most people haven't played it. It might not impress, but at least it's something new rather than most people looking at BoF3 and saying "nah, I don't want to play that again".
but I'm still surprised that Capcom didn't just try to release the earlier title first anyway.
This is gog we are talking about. They ported silent hill 4 instead of 1 or 2 because it's too hard and scary to do them properly
Extremely good fucking news.
That's beautiful. Peak pixel art.
I hope they never remake, but remaster the game just to bring more color and life to an already a great game.
is there a romhack for the ps1 that restores these cuts?
There's a much more direct way to pirate games that are on GoG than Steam, ironically since GoG is the one that focuses more on ownership/DRM-free releases.
Yeah.
If Ryu was a shota I'm certain Ursula would devour him.
Somebody seems to think that people who buy at GOG hate piracy.
That's kind of a dumb idea, but they seem committed to it.
Never played a BoF but I'm tempted now, though I said that when they put out Dino Crisis 1&2 and haven't done that yet either.
Stop remaking games that are already great, direct ports and remasters which build off the original as much as possible are what should be done with them. Save remakes for troubled games.
Most of that image is 3d. But it is seamless, because the texturing is the same resolution as the sprites.
while i'm a pirate, i generally prefer to pay for things i like, especially games
Christ the camp screens are cosy
i still dream about 3 and 4 remakes
Anon the game is right there playable on PC and you could emulate 3&4 already, why do you need remakes? I could see remaking the SNES ones since they're very rough around the edges, but why the ones that are perfectly good?
No.
You can't replicate this level of soul.
youtube.com
youtube.com
I've simply never stopped listening to the soundtrack
Yeah, it is fantastic. Don't take the previous comment as a claim that one is better than the other. Simply that you can't really remake an SNES game without losing the soul because incredibly lofi midi orchestra is core to the feel.
Also something to note that I don't think people actually do based on complaints is that you are supposed to use repels constantly in Breath of Fire while backtracking.
Back in my facebook days 10 years ago I found the OST composer and massage her congratulating her for the work she did.
She actually answered me kek.
At that time she lived in London with her husband.
I hope someday she works with BoF again.
To be honest, I'm surprised that it's BoF4. I would've thought that BoF3 would be the one that would get released first.
BoF4 already had an official PC version, even if it wasn't officially available anywhere anymore for some reason.
Pretty sure this new release is built upon the old PC version as its base. Is it not?
why does BoF4 Rei have a huge blunt
Why did they make BoF4's Katt a rabbit?
She is cool and all. But why?
that has never worked in the history of ever except for Trials of Mana and then they let the chinks kill it
2 localizations of the game included (English and Japanese)
what does this mean? is that just languages or is there two translated scripts? cause you wouldnt call a japanese script a japanese localization
I genuinely hate how 4 and DQ both pushed the shitty hybrid form instead of giving you true transformations.
Generally, it means you have two different downloads, one for the english version and one for the japanese version. I've not bought the game to find out exactly.
I mean that's nice, but why play that instead of just emulating the PSX version in high res?
yeah thats the one of the big reasons I didnt like 4 at all. 3 let you combine dragon genes but you also got to go from small whelps to straight up giant serpnents
The amount of Indians has significantly increased
4 was the beginning of the downfall of the series but 4fags will never admit it.
It's not an emulator.
why isnt this on Steam though?
3 had the best master system (though a few tweaks could make it excellent), the best dragon system, and the most interesting Ryu. 4 felt like a disappointment afterwards, and DQ was not a Breath of Fire game.
So buying this won't help to support older games being brought back?
GOG contacted Capcom directly about putting it on PC. That's pretty much the whole point of the GOG Dreamlist. It's telling GOG who to talk two and what will sell on the platform.
Does 3 have a pc port?
BoF3's windows port was a china exclusive. Hope you can read bug runes.
Says it includes the Eng and JP localizations
If someone makes an actual translation of the JP version it might be worth playing.
I boughted it
4 was a good game but I hated that they made some areas really cramped-looking coming from 3 from what I remember. Feels less like an adventure in a big worldspace and more like walking through corridors in some parts of the game desu.
What emulator?
That's the remake they are asking 30bux for
why did they put the uh, humans next to the monkey clan?
No, but you'll get a new gacha.
Anyone gonna make a difficulty mod?
You probably won't get a new Breath of Fire game from this, no.
You might see an increase of old games coming to GOG from this.
I'd kick dirt on your shoes if I could,
Now we've got a direct way to tell Capcom "We want more Breath of Fire please"
grassrunners
excellent in melee combat
Pic unrelated.
one breath of fire 7 coming right up
this. I hope to god it gets a port ATLEAST.
Dreading her scenes boys, it's gonna hurt as much as it did last time.
Why purchase this over emulating
This is a re-packaging of the original Windows 9X/ XP version of the game. Which I never actually knew existed until now. It was released originally only in a few regions of the world, including Japan. The ISO is probably available on Archive.org. I'm sure it has some visual enhancements over the original PSX release.
You wouldn't really stand in the way of science, would you?
nigger killing the industry
Because mods.
Of course not!
I want a remaster of 3 with updated sprites that is more faithful to the artstyle.
God-tier character design too
The game is trash that doesn't live up to its predecessors. Even Capcom thinks so.
Yuna makes Hojo look like a pussy
Yuna makes most JRPG antagonists look like incompetent buffoons.
Thoughts??
I am not a weeb. I did buy Baldur's Gate 3 on GOG instead.
Honestly just looks like if Oro from SF3 was a Legend of Zelda character. Still a good design but that's all I can see.
Because it's the best BoF. Only place to go was downhill.
Why have they done 4 but not 3?
Considering the only games that followed it were a polarising spin-off that is BoF in name only and an awful mobile game which got so panned that it never left Japan before servers shut down? It’s not like there was anywhere to go but down.
Literally all Capcom had to do was just stick to the formula, and we would be in the double digits of BoFs by now.
GOG's Preservation is limited to games with PC ports. BoF4 got a PC version back in the day that they've been able to work off of; IIRC 3 only ever came out on PC in China and that version may not be readily available. Same reason they were able to get RE1-3 and Dino Crisis 1&2 up; they all had PC versions.
it's the way he keeps his arms folded behind his back, turning his sleeves into folded wings to complete his owl motif while characterizing him as debonaire that does it for me.
Dragon Quarter is half the reason Dead Rising exists; DR1 was devs from DQ slapping Shadow of Rome's combat onto a similar timed RPG format and a different setting. So in a way it birthed something new. Many BoF 3&4's devs still work at Capcom too; they were some of the leads on SF6's World Tour mode, hence the post-game superbosses mostly being BoF characters with Fou-Lu being tied with Sheng Long for the game's most difficult.
Doesn't really count for much but I do think that with enough interest something could come about; it DID do well on the survey they did (not as well as Dino Crisis but some speculated DC got botted/coordinated votes to beef up its numbers).
Is GoG allowed to work on the game's codes or their licenses are restrictive? I mean, could GoG have launched BoFIV retranslated from the Japanese version and uncensored, with HD videos, etc?
It can't be that hard to port old snes and ps2 games to PC, c'mon Capgog do a collection.
Also BoF4 was ported by Sourcenext, so where are the Sourcenext loyalist? It's still a solid port of the classic PC game
I think a BoF Legacy Collection is very possible for consoles & PC given its success in their survey from a ways back, but it would take more time than GOG making an old PC port work on current OSes. Also I think 1&2 are on Switch Online already.
They only company today that ports old games that I know of is M2. Which leaves emulation. SNES, yes, it is basically 100% accurate to the real thing. PS2? Probably takes way more effort than Capcom would be willing to do. Not a well emulated console at all.
Why Alpha 2 specifically? Is there an old PC port of that? Honestly if they do more Street Fighter I'd like to have SFxT taken off of GFWL hell just for posterity (SF Mouse Generation would be nice too but that shit would be a licensing nightmare).
The X Collections have X7 & X8 though, and the MvC Collection has a very good version of NAOMI hardware emulation with rollback for Marvel 2 (which is presumably what CFC2 will be using, a collection that ALSO has CFJ, a PS2 game).
A step in the right direction, but you could already pirate the PC version if you didn't want to emulate it.
I'm hoping for a bundle of all the BoF games. That'd be peak kino. The BoF4 port was just a PC version that already existed.
I really think Dragon Quarter would find an audience today with its difficulty and darker tone too, I've never played it and I'm super curious because people either adore it or bounced off it: That says it did something interesting.
I've seen DQ described as an RPG designed like an arcade game and as a game that was way too early for the roguelite boom so I think you're probably right.
You will have SaGa remasters
You will have Suikoden remasters
You will have Raidou remasters
You will have Lunar remasters
You will NOT have Breath of Fires ever
I was actually thinking of those 2 when I was typing. Not Capcom, but there's also SMT Nocturne remaster a few years ago, which was good. So perhaps these companies do have access to either the source codes or functional PS2 emulators these days.
I didn't actually play X7 or X8 even though I have that collection, but I assume they play fine. Or rather, play as they are intended to.
I've never played it and I'm super curious because people either adore it or bounced off it: That says it did something interesting.
It's a "roguelite" RPG. Nowadays, roguelites are everywhere and people are very familiar with the mechanics of gaining incremental progress, but back in the day people hated it because you basically progressed by going forward, resetting to a previous save, and then going forward again, rinse and repeat. People also hated it when it released (myself included) because it wasn't traditional Breath of Fire. It's a very good game, but it's nothing like its predecessor gameplay-wise or atmosphere-wise, so a lot of people popped it in, saw it wasn't 3 niggaz in a row, and then never looked at it again.
In my opinion, it is the BoF that has best withstood the test of time, and I agree that it would find a new "cult classic" audience today, but that wasn't how it went down back then.
I mostly play other types of games on GOG. Might give RE2 and RE3 a try when the GOG summer sale comes since i remember watching people playing those games in the local PC Club and finding them interesting.
You really think Capcom is going to do that? They certainly aren't doing that for Mega Man. Unless it sells exceedingly well like 2m+ in a month, they are going to keep focusing on their prime IPs more: Monster Hunter & Resident Evil.
I didn't finish bof4
managed to get to some kind of castle where there was a dragon that regenerated
anyone remembers what part could be this fight in?
probably close to beating the game
you buy in so Capcom notices and makes more.
The sales of GoG's BoF4 would have to be astronomical in order for Capcom to notice and for them to care. Remember, it's just a port of a PC client that already existed. It's not new. There was no real effort involved in releasing BoF4. As it stands, it's a low effort cash grab if anything, but it is a slightly good sign that reveals they have not completely forgotten about BoF. And Fou-Lu was a boss in SF5 I think.
Not on steam, not interested.
nvm it was Dragonne
also I kinda spoiled the ending
I always thought you would end befriending fou lu
Does it have the extra shit and is it the uncensored JP ver?
I'll take emulator save states over these useless ports.
I demand a remake
And I demand your mom, remakefag
and speed up
My thought is that Breath of Fire is a mediocre JRPG series made an action game company who didn't know what they were doing. Great sprite art, though.
If nothing else, it's the one that needs a retranslation the most since if someone told you Alexander O. Smith, the same one who did Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII, you would call them a damned liar because holy shit does DQ's text read like ass from the bottom all the way to the top.
The number of lines that have critical information omitted is also non-trivial, considering that the script isn't very large to begin with, even small cuts or alterations have a significant impact.
have hacked ps3
have pc
What do. Which one?
Thoughts??
BoF is one of the most egregiously generic JRPG series' around and the 4th game is one of the weaker entries.
If you don't like how older games look, sound and play, then why are you playing older games?
The emulated version already doesn't look blurry.
Why are you adding extra steps?
It's more responsive
What does that even mean? If you're talking about input lag 1) it doesn't matter, it's a JRPG, and 2) Retroarch's Hard GPU Sync makes games responsive as fuck and 3) If you want to go further you can enable Run-ahead which makes it more responsive than the original game running on real hardware.
That applies to every game regardless of generation.
And I'm not talking about how the game looks, but the modders can add cut content, retranslate it, etc.
It's confirmed the Japanese version is uncensored still? In the GOG release specifically I mean.
Haven't played it yet, but according to some guy in the Forum:
Did they restore the censored content? The US version was censored and I dunno if the GOG release uncensored it.
The game comes with two versions.
The english, which is censored.
And the Japanese, which is uncensored.
So no, they did not "restore" the censored stuff. Just gave you the untouched game on the side. GOG forums are coping and bargaining for modders to do the actual decensoring.
And Capcom didn't bother to just use the Japanese version with the US version's English translation? Fucking lazy. They should've released 4 uncensored in the west back then instead of being cucks and censoring it.
This game looks gorgeous on my $50 chinese handheld, runs flawlessly and pixel perfect matching screen.
I cannot imagine paying for a rom files you can ld anywherre in 20 seconds
I was about to ask if that light gun actually worked on the handheld and then I realized it wasn't a light gun.
it's for size comparison
Neat, 1'll buy it!
Honestly I'm more shocked that I was stupid enough to think that thing could be light gun compatible in the first place.
it is possible if you buy the bluetooth sinden lightgun and output this through micro hdmi to an lcd tv. Anything is possible.
youtube.com
Where's the right and left buttons for the camera angles?
anyone noticed some audio problems? It's keeps cutting or something when they try to loop it
It is. Other games that had PC releases way back then:
- Megaman Legends 1 and 2
- Dino Crisis 1 and 2
- Resident Evil Survivor
- All the Megaman X games, except X2 (yes, even X7 had a PC port)
- X-Men Children of Atom
- Die Hard Trilogy 1 and 2
BoF2 didn't even let you transform because Ryu was a half-breed. You could only call a visage of the chosen dragon and it attacked the enemies.
IV's hybrid form is like a Super Saiyan but draconic so it's cool.
